Bottle Rocket - USA 1996 - Wes Anderson

Plot:  This is the story of how three weirdos/misfits/losers/dorks (Owen and Jack Wilson and another guy) who happen to also be best friends, try to escape their frustrations at not fitting in with what is normal or cool or acceptable ... or anything at all ... for a life of crime.  Of course the results are disasterous as they're just as useless at being criminals as they are at everything else.

This is Wes Anderson's directorial debut.  Some of his trademarks are already in place.  Namely the fucked up characters who are at the same time annoying and endearing.  The understated acting and funny dialogues.  The hillarious fistfights and other mis-haps.  It shows that is was made on a relatively small budget.  There are no elaborate sets, colorful costumes.  The stage play/dollhouse effect of later films is not as pronounced.  It's a really good film but once again it's the kind of thing I would be careful about recommending because some people won't get it, others may just not care.

An American Werewolf in London - USA 1981 - John Landis

Plot: Two American students find themselves in the ass end of Northern English countryside on a cold dark night.  As is the way with these things they get attacked by a werewolf.  One of them dies while the other escapes with some scratches as the nearby villagers shoot the beast.  He gets taken to a hospital in London.  Has terrible nightmares.  Has sex with the nurse who takes him home as a boyfriend after he is discharged from hospital.  And on the day of the full moon he turns into a werewolf the first time attacking and killing a half a doze people all across London then waking up in the wolf cage in London zoo.  The second night creating full-scale mayhem around Picadilly Circus and coming ot an untimely end when the police come with the big guns.

Review:  I really enjoyed this movie in spite of myself.  It's corny and cringe worthy in all the ways you can expect but at the same time it is so much more endearing than so much of today's soulless horror flicks.  And also the special effects during the transformation scenes are positively incredible and so much better than the CG created stuff used in more recent years.  Fun movie.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - Japan - A piece of shit movie

So to get ready for Godzilla which I am going to see early on monday, I decided to watch an old Godzilla movie as I had not seen any. I looked online and saw that this one is one of the favorites, it has the three headed dragon dude which was the final boss in the NES game, my friend had it and wanted to watch it so it was chosen. What kind of horse shit is this. This is the kind of movie you find on sci-fi network at 2am in the morning. Everything is terrible, the acting, the directing, the story, the dialogue, the action, I will give a pass for the effects cause its made on the cheap but it's bad too. The movie jumps from scenes so irradically. Some scenes are there just to explicitly tell the audience over and over what is happening cause apparently everyone that watches these movies are stupid or something. "The UFO has to be a time machine." Next guy "A time machine?", next guy "So it's a time machine?!" next guy "Yes a time machine from the future. " next guy "From the future?" OMG shut the fuck up.

The plot is non sensical but I guess that is what I get when I watch a movie about dudes from the future who go back in time to create King Ghidorah so that it destroys Japan so that Japan doesn't become the strongest nation ever which causes the Japanese to awaken Godzilla who kills King but then Godzilla attacks Japan which makes them go back to the future to revive King bring him back in time to fight Godzilla who was revived in the first place to fight King, head full of fuck gif. It took forever for Godzilla to show up, I thought it would finally get good but it just became a series of repeated shots of Godzilla roaring and the two monsters shooting beams at each other while explosions went off. I wanted Godzilla to shoot a beam at me and melt me so I didn't have to watch anymore. Any episode of Power Rangers is better than this garbage.

This could double as a review for the American Godzilla; and probably the new Godzilla film you're about to see too.

It also perfectly summarises why these films are so good.

At least the crappy 98 one was a by the book summer movie, it was watchable.Ok effects for the time, at least it had actual on location shooting for the city destruction scenes.. Predictable  movie beats. Action that actually makes sense. Characters that are more than just "stand around and make stupid shocked faces". It might have not done the Godzilla character justice and probably more of a Jurassic Park ripoff but shit, I'll take that any day than completely unwatchable B-movie crap.

This Taxi chase from the 98 Godzilla while a pretty bad action sequence is at least a coherent one. It has an ebb and flow to it, with moments made to feel suspence. Actual camera angles that showcase the action. Some dialogue to lighten the mood that doesn't sound like its from the original Resident Evil. Yes its a bad rip off of Jurassic Park. Yes its ridiculous that Godzilla cant easily destroy one taxi. But it's a scene that is watchable.

This is terrible. Its two puppets taking turns shooting bad effect lights at each other with crappy explosions going off. It's almost like watching a turned based RPG. Is it cool looking, sure but nothing is really happening, you need to let your imagination fill in all the gaps and pretend you are watching two giant monsters fighting. When in a movie like say Pacific Rim you actually see what looks like monsters fighting.

Anyway i have seen that a million times in any Power Ranger episode and as I said any one of them is better than what I saw last night. At least those monsters in suits actually move well and quick. There is some semblance of fight choregraphy. And there is awesome bad ass music. Man Power Rangers was awesome.

I saw it when it came out and enjoyed it. Don;t know who Wes Anderson is though. This is likely the only film I saw of his since I stopped watching movies in '98.

1. All 3 videos are horrible (and highly amusing).

2. The characters in Godzilla are just as pantomime as they are in King Ghidorah; they're just better actors (in equally bad roles where their only job is to look frightened, pretty or comical).

3. The only difference between Power Rangers and King Ghidorah are faster cuts and explosions. The fact that it contains fight choreography is not a point of superiority when that choreography is analogues in its impact to a puppet screaming at another puppet (which is a pretty awesome sound effect, btw.)

4. "At least the crappy 98 one was a by the book summer movie" is a strange argument: of the two shit films, the one that is most derivative is the better one?

5. In conclusion: the only genuine point of difference between the three is that at least King Ghidorah is completely honest with the audience about what it is. The other two bedazzle; and are relatively vulgar as a result.

I can gain some enjoyment from a movie that feels like a movie. I cant get anything out of something that feels like a terrible made for TV movie.

Something tells me you may actually enjoy Wes Anderson.  You like the Cohen Brothers' sense of humor.  His is not exactly similar (not quite so black) but people who like one, often like the other.

I never understood why people hate on Broderick Godzilla, it was a cheesy, solid fun action movie similar to Emmerichs other work.

Also Vader, that clip of rubber Godzilla is amazing. Grinning

Fandom. It gets Godzilla "wrong" so that alone makes people hate everything about the movie. Like you said its like his other work, if you want to see shit blow up its fun.

And yes in concept rubber suit monsters horribly fighting is sweet, trudging through a bad B-movie for an hour to get there is not. Then after 5 minutes of the same shit it gets boring. At least to me. Seems there were some better fights out there some where Godzilla actually starts to through punches and shit which is hilarious.

Godzilla - USA - Disaster film

A well made Godzilla movie that doesn't balance the human drama with the sheer badassness of monsters fighting all that well. Everything with the humans was boring and uneventful. Everything with Godzilla was incredible and jaw dropping. It does have some great moments but it is never consistent. In terms of effects and spectacle it is worth seeing. It is no where near the crapfest that was Godzilla 98 and has a lot more in common with classic Godzilla, except that this is a movie worth watching.

Mardock Scramble The First Compression - Japan - Animated movie

Story: a girl named is taken in by a man named Shell, who later kills her and left her for dead. She is saved and turned into a cyborg. It is up to her to stop Shell and his evil gang.

The first in a trilogy of films, Mardock Scramble is a short but fairy uninteresting film, despite the high concept and intriguing premise.

Gravity - British production with U.S actors and a Mexican director - Space Drama

Story: A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after a catastrophe destroys their shuttle and leaves them adrift in orbit.

Gravity to me, feels more like an Epcot ride at Disney World than a film. I can imagine seeing this at the cinema would be quite the experience, especially in 3D. Yet, at home, the super simple plot can drag, even over a relatively short 1 and a half hours.

Unfortunately with only two actors there isn't much story to tell. Gravity is about an event more than a plot with revelations and surprises. It has stunning effects work, dazzling camera work and it is nice to watch a film almost entirely set in space. As a short, it could have been an effective metaphor for the struggle of life. As it is, it's perhaps dragged out just a tad too much given the slight material and there are few too many happy coincidences. Despite these flaws it's still a good watch.

Justice League War - USA - Animated movie

Story: Resetting the Justice League introduction once again, this tells of the formation of the League as they unite for the first time to stop Darkseids invasion of Earth.

Whilst completely solid as an endevour, JLA War is an unwelcome retread over well worn and fraying at the edges material. How many times do we need to see the re-interpreted formation of the JLA and how many times do we have to witness Darkseid trying to take over the earth with Parademons? The only notable thing about JLA War is the Green Lantern being turned into a bafoon and Wonder Woman being attracted to Superman.

Couldn't agree more.  Found the film incredible to look at but ultimately empty and devoid of substance and feeling, or like gg said, even a story.  I remember watching apollo 13 many years ago and feeling moved by it.  I expected something similar from this but not in the least.  Very fancy looking but no substance.  I would rate it slightly lower.

The human embryo scene was a tad too long. You could see it coming a mile away and the director milked the moment too long so it became cynical to me. Clooney did a good job, I mean he was his usual self but that kind of persona was perfect for the character.
