Why don't you tell us all about how much you're enjoying it. That would be lovely.

Ok Manpretty, here it goes.

Well I played a few hours this morning. Production wise this one is much much better than Demon's or DS1. Everything from the graphics to the sound and the slick in-game menu's are all a few notches ahead of the old games. One thing I really like is that its set up exactly like the last one in terms of gameplay systems, controls etc. so its very easy to jump from DS1 to DS2. Something about the controls feels weird, though....like it almost feels a bit floaty compared to the first game. I can't put my finger on it but its noticeable.

I really need a better weapon and I need to get a bit deeper to figure out where I'm going.

Hate might be a strong term, because I might "hate" it the way Towers "hates" Metroid Prime 3, but the other games are just better than it. For starters the core of the combat is compromised in one too many ways. The other games have their jank, but none of it is as bad as the hit detection in Dark Souls 2, and the fucking lunge some of the enemies have and the absurd amount of enemies built around a tracking move. Something Demon's Souls rarely does, Dark Souls does sparingly, and DS3/BB actually use some what correctly. With turtle enemies being more chore than fun since the challenge should be fight them at the side, but the real fight is this tedious hit n run thing...and these big black mother fuckers later in the game that basically never break stamina because yolo.

The game is heavy on mobs in a way the other Souls games aren't, as they are usually better about letting you push n pull one at a time, and then using a mob for a spike here or there. Dark Souls 2? Fuck that, mobs all day, erryday.

The run up to bosses are some of the biggest loads of shit the series has probably ever done in some cases. In Scholar of the First Sin there is a flexile sentry you have to deal with in high water on the way to Lost Sinner, the fucking path to Verstedt I am convinced was developed by Kirst Dunst, the cunt of the century.

And FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK who ever said "yeah lets make an adaptability stat that governs the dodge roll in these games". Which yes in theory was meant to add more depth because now even your i-frame is a statistcal abstraction to how you build your character. In fucking theory, in practice given that the dodge roll itself, and said i-frame is an important part about how you deal with some attack patterns and enemies, and oh by the way this game has shitty hit detection, yeah FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK that. These games are built on abstraction for your attack/defense stats, but general ability to time your swing and dodge is about own personal player skill, it's why low leveling bosses is a possible thing for high level play, and it worked perfectl yfucking fine, so why mess with it.

As a result, this game also seems to be the most leveling up friendly of the bunch, because they had to compensate for the fact that they gave you multiple stats now (about 4) that are universally important to every build, thus you get levels like fucking candy, and not as a result of me just playing these enough times, that I just know better to level myself up. Especially because of how bon fire happy the game gets, where as the other games make you work a bit more to level up, and bon fires are just better spread out, so you do get moments where you make some serious trecks through an area with a shit load of souls in the balance.

Since you brought up the floatyness, the way Chris and I word it, is that every attack feels thinner than the other entries. Like they dialed back on the umph n crunch of every combat hit, took some of the weight off it. And I'm not particular a fine, as it takes away a level of satisfaction of every sword hit. It also doesn't help that even at 60 frames the game feels like some of the feedback loop is a bit delayed, plus aformentioned doo-doo butter hit detection.

I can deal with the shitty dudes in armor bosses that are basically the Pursuer on repeat, I can deal with the visually incoherent world design, I can even deal with some of the shittiest level design this series has had (because it's not like Lost Izalith wasn't a thing, or the crystal caves, or doing the hidden village a second time in bloodborne with the bell maiden bitches, or the asshole tumor that is Chalice Dungeons), but the fundamental core combat being compromised so much? In the only action rpg combat I actually enjoy? Yeah fuck that game. lol

So they let you fast travel much earlier in this one...interesting.

And you also get penalized for not restoring your humanity in this one...most interesting.

The game is beautiful but so far I prefer the first DS as well as Demon's. The level design seems like a step back in this one? Still really good though.

Perhaps it has been fixed.  I should hope so.  It affected the entire game when played at 60FPS.  It had something to do with weapon usage being calculated by the number of frames for which it was used.  And as it was geared for the 30FPS versions (PS3 and X360), the weapons broke twice as fast when the game was played at 60FPS.

This was a problem in First Sin? Or just the original DS2?

I think both when played on PC.  PS4 and X1 only got the game when the First Sin edition was released and those were affected too.

So I guess there are two characters who can build you boss soul weapons....nice.

I had accidently killed the chick, but there's a mage locked up in a cell who can also make weapons. Are they the same weapons on offer no matter which character you talk to?

I gave DS2 a shot. Didn't like it. It shits on something that made the previous games great, mainly enemy encounters and the way they're handled. Hopefully DS3 is better.
