So guys who have yet to buy a 3DS but have at least been considering it (a group I put myself in), has the conference yesterday and the hands-on with the half dozen or so key games brought you closer to getting one?  Has Sony's conference put you off buying that 3DS you were considering by charming you with the Vita?

I've been wondering this about myself.  I think I will be seriously tempted by the 3DS once a few of those are actually in shops.  Especially if there are some better deals by that time.  As regards the Vita, it will again depend on games, none of the ones announced so far are turning my eyes but I'm sure it will happen at some point.

I think Nintendo will have a price cut by the Holiday season and then a big marketing push as well as these new games - it will be off to a flying start. You know with nintendo portables what you are getting:

  • A Mario Kart
  • Animal Crossing
  • Fire Emblem
  • Advance Wars
  • Mario Platformer
  • Zelda portable
  • Mario RPG

Among other things. Of course if you don't have any affiliation with those games it wont mean much; but for me, you know they are going to support it with a good slice of portable content, they have been doing it for years. Vita is so high end visually you might as well make the games on home consoles, which means long dev times and huge resources. In portable gaming, cheapness helps.

Can we safely assume Sony and Microsoft tech guys are already busy building their very own versions of the uPad to release by the time of the U's release for their respective consoles?

No, but:

Yoshida: Wii U will inspire Vita experiments

Wow, if you add the prospect of Metroid, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Picross 3D and Endless Ocean (and the afforementioned Luigi's Mansion 2 and Kid Icarus) to those, as well as the possibility of a host of games to download from the gameboy family of libraries ... I would buy it right now.  Is it sad that after so many years the same games (essentially) still do it for us?

I agree with you on the big inherent problem of the Vita.  It's the exact same problem the psp had which prevented it from having its own identity for a very long time

Metroid Dread may be ressurected? There was a gba and a DS Metroid game so who knows. Kirby is for sure, even though I'm not a fan. Endless Ocean would probably use the assets they already have from wii like EO2 used the fish and whale models from EO1 and then added new species. I guess Arika could just make new environments and story and then use most of the wii code to make a quick and dirty 3DS game - in a good way.

Some of my tolerance has waned in regards to some franchises, I'm not sure if I can stomach another Smash Bros, oh yeah they confirmed 3DS Smash bros. And Mario Kart, not sure. Animal Crossing 3DS trailer looks too similar to the old games too. And I never did pick up mario and luigi 3 on DS.

My most anticipated 3DS would be Phoenix Wright with 3D environments I could walk about in.

I think we all missed this about Wii U

Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard drive disk.

So no hard drive but SDHC 32gb card support and you can plug in a USB hard drive. Thoughts?

I'm not sure about Animal Crossing.  I think it could get me hooked allover again (especially if there was a live community here) but I would probably actively try to avoid it as I cannot afford another time-sink like that.  Mario Kart is not a sure bet either, though I enjoyed the DS version for quite a while (especially multiplayer with friends).  Not sure if the addition of 3D would be enough for another go-around.

I can never have enough good 2D side-scrawling action/platformers/adventures so I would be very happy with as many Castlevania, Metroid even Contra type games even if the 3D aspect was just to add depth but maintain gameplay in the 2D plane (in fact I hope there will still be many games with 2D gameplay).

The one Nintendo franchise I've really definitely had enough of is pokemon.  Smash Bros also I was never too big on, so it leaves me kind of cold.

I think Endless Ocean would look and feel amazing (maybe scary or claustrophobic as well) simply by the addition of full 3D, even if they reused Wii assets.  It would add a whole new level of immersiveness.

It doesn't please me, in fact it worries me.  I would personally feel a lot happier if it came with a 250GB hard disk (or even a 40-60GB one) on board.  32GB SDHC is ridiculously expensive.  I would be happy to buy my own external HDD but would Nintendo allow full usage of it (storing, installing, downloading, you-name-it) or would it be a situation like the Wii (the "fridge" problem) ie having to move things around to clear enough space for something, and still being very constrained by the size of the internal flash memory as to what size files it can run.

I think it will be allright if Nintendo has a file size limit so 3rd parties don't just do these ridiculous gb updates.

This is cool, fan made ideas for Wii U

I dont like the lack of IR for a lot of games I think I rather just use a wiimote. Will the next Zelda be downgraded control wise, will FPS not have IR aiming, I think that is dumb.

Agreed.

IR actually can benefit games control wise.

Red Steel 3 Wii U. :X

What are we going to do with the stylus? Is there a sheath for it on the controller like there is with the DS?
