I like No More Blues, when the jazz piano kicks in it's so cool.

I love the album, most bossa nova is cheesy crap, Quincy Jones sort of stuff. This is real bossa with peerless musicians. Cannonball Adderly did a great album too.

I know Tania  Maria doesn't do Bossa, but some of her tracks are just amazing. Tranquility for instance.

Is anyone else excited for Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest?  Their Yellow House album was my favorite of 2007.  I just bought Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album and it is pretty damn great.

i find the whole animal collective, deerhunter, grizzly, atlas sound, beirut, bright eyes, devendra etc scene (i know not all of those sound alike but in my mind they are a "scene") a little pretentious and lacking in substance ... how was it that aspro put it?  self-aware of their own coolness ... or words to that effect

but then again i'd be hard pressed to find much music to like in any scene so heavily reliant on words and singing

edit: by the way i'm using aspro's words totally out of context as he said that about something else entirely so in no way am i claiming that he shares this view Nyaa

For me, I don't really care about anything aside from the music.  I don't have much use for deciding that a band's music is good or bad based on what scene they belong to.  The only thing that matters is the music.  Any scene is disgusting if you are around it long enough, but if you can divorce yourself from it and just listen to the music, none of the superficial stuff matters.

I used to be a part of the west coast indie rock scene back when I graduated.  I was setting up shows for bands on K Records, States Rights and Know-Yr-Own and I was very concerned about the gossip and the drama that went on in that scene, and eventually I had to abandon trying to be a part of that whole scene in favor of being myself, but I never stopped listening to the music.(I know this last paragraph is cheesy... I also don't care.Nyaa)

that's cool.  i agree with you.  a lot of the time though not easy to divorce the music from the scene/cultural setting, especially at a live, with minions of idol worshiping no1 fans.  i also agree about the having been around long enough bit.  happened to me too many times.

anyway ... here's what i think is a nice little groove to see the summer in
(will come as no surprise to anyone who's visited shanti town in AC Nyaa )

Augustus Pablo - Java (Live)

Check it!

terry wogan is a radio presenter who does the commentary for the bbc eurovision coverage and he rips them apart in a hilarious way.  he is the reason a lot of people watch it in the UK

I like Animal Collective, and The Residents. Somebody's teacher described avant-gade as "a massive wank" and it's true, but it sounds good, and is meant to be funny. At least in the case of The Residents it is, not too sure about Animal Collective. But as I said, both sound nice, so that's all I need! Speaking of words, though, I can't understand anything Animal Collective sing, and The Residents earlier on didn't have many lyrics, though in modern times they're basically an outlet for the singers poetry.

Anbyway, ships 'a goin' down...

Can't go wrong with Arrested Development, though.
