So I was reading in the Media Create figures how Japan is essentially closed this week for some kind of annual festival, which I vaguely understand from Harvest Moon, and this prompted me to seek greater understadning about national holidays in your country.

Tell me about one national holiday in your country that is unique to your country.  I think that would tell me a bit more about your part of the world.

Also, if you want, I'd be interested in what standard vacation pay allocations are like in your land.  In the US, I used to get 2 weeks of paid vacation a year (though for 13 years I never took more than 4 days off at a time).  That was considered normal among the people I knew.  There were also 7 national holidays that were observed.

Here in Australia Mrs. Aspro gets 5 weeks paid vacation plus 1 week paid personal leave and then there are more  national holidays here as well.  She is told that is fairly normal (though being from the states we are shocked at how much time off that is).

Well is it unique that none of those holidays are in any way interesting, or have any meaning?

Well they didn't used to. Now they're a bit of a patriotic chest pumping fest, but that's beside the point.

Victoria Day, in reference to Queen Victoria, and referred colloquially as May 2-4 weekend is a Canadian holiday on the last Monday on or before May 24.  From what I can glean, it appears to be a common excuse to go camping and drink.

Employment standards require minimum compensation for a full-time employee of 4% of the annual earnings, or 2 weeks paid vacation, per year.  Full-time is considered a minimum of, I believe, 32 hours, but typical jobs are 40 hours per week.  Employment standards dictate also as a minimum, a 30-minute unpaid lunch, and two paid 15-minute breaks for a full 8-hour shift.  Anything above 44 hours per week is overtime, meaning wages are multiplied by 1.5.

Yeah, for an outsider the obsession the TV news (and thus the population) has with a war against the Turks 100 years ago is a bit perplexing.  It's non-stop for about 2 months.

Is Burns Night related to Guy Fawks Night?  Or is this another holidy to burn things?

All those seem to match the US laws (except for the required holiday pay -- there is no requirement in the US, and the 40 hours).  I should say that upon reflection, I thin ktoward the end of my career I was getting 4 or 6 weeks of paid vacation -- but since I never took it I am fuzzy on the details.  I do know that it accrued year by year though, so when I left it was a hefty amount.

And it didn't used to be that bad even a few years ago. It was no Australia Day, though which was just a good day to have a party and get drunk. Now it's suddenly about national identity and other such BS.

Yeah. Okay, good, so I'm not imagining it.  Weird.  Sometimes when you are a foreigner you don't know if you are over-perceiving some things.

I suppose July 14 fit the bill for France, after all it's our national holiday. Not really interesting to me, fireworks and military parade, and in the older times there were some ball. Well actually they still exists but are less popular.

And I have 5 weeks of paid vacation per year that I intend to use at the end of the month! Here I am Finland!

I won't go there in winter though Grinning

I wont let any ugly naked men in my sauna ^^

Anyway I'm flying there tomorrow, weather is apparently nice (around 26 degrees) and sunny. So it will be perfect.

After one week of holiday in the south of france (35 degrees on average) with friends, it will be a nice change. See you in 2 weeks! And have fun Happy
