Half-Way Through the Year Post - Best so far and Best to come?
I always base my GOTY on what I have played in the year (not necessarily just games released this year).
My GOTY so far is Yakuza 2. For games released this year (and that I have played) is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.
I'm looking forward to playing Moonwalker when my Genesis is hooked up. Also Mario Galaxy. In terms of coming releases, I'm not really amped about anything.
EDIT: RE5 and Uncharted 2 are in my list for the rest of the year, so no doubt one of those will end up on my GOTY lists given how much I enjoyed the RE4 (10) and Uncharted (9.5).

There have been some really good games released this year like RE5, Punch-Out, Infamous, Street Fighter 4, GTA Chinatown Wars, those are just some that I have played. Best game I have played this year is Resident Evil 5, put over 100 hours into this one. I have so many games to catch up on, especially on the Wii.
Later this year I expect Uncharted 2, Batman, Mass Effect 2, Modern Warfare 2, and Assassin's Creed 2 to be among the best of the year.
There are two things I need to consider when it comes to picking a GOTY this year:
(1) My GOTY last year was a DS game: The World Ends With You. I need to stop looking in the obvious places and expect the unexpected when it comes to where my gaming preferences take me. I fully expected it to be MGS4 or something on the Wii or PS3. Hell, I played the heck out of Disgaea 3 and BioShock last year and --THEY-- took a back seat to a portable game!?
(2) That being said, my average interest in a game can usually be measured in weeks or sometimes even days. It would not be atypical of me to say I have bought a game, gotten totally into it, loved it, played it and then lost interest in it... to the point where I would trade it in... in the span of a single week! THAT being said: I have been playing STREET FIGHTER IV consistently for the last 4 months! We may have a very strong contender here!

I do like to keep an open mind though, so here is a list of some of the other games that could potentially be big for me for the rest of 2009:
Muramasa
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Scribblenauts
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
BioShock 2
Phantasy Star 0
Dante's Inferno

I like having the irony of running a gaming site yet hardly playing any games. I've finished two games this year: Princess Debut and Adventure Island: The Beginning.
---
Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobileI'm not sure I've played any games this year, but Madworld would have to be up there for me too...
And HOTD: Overkill of course!
Chinatown wars was a standout, so technically well done for the platform and suprisingly good.
Otherwise.......... got to say Animal Crossing. How could I not? Played it every day since the end of 2008. That's six months straight. You cant beat that.
End of the year hopes, well I would have hoped that Mario Galaxy 2 would release but noooooooooooooooooooooo.
So I really want to get hands on with Silent Hill and Red Steel 2 and finally get Fallout 3 and maybe, just maybe Fable 2.
Viva Pinata! For the time being, that is. When Mass Effect comes raging on, nothing will be the same again.
At the moment, Rittai Picross, Chinatown Wars and KZ2 are my picks for GOTY. SF4 doesn't really count (since it was released last year), as will Tekken 6 (been out for a while now). However, KOF XII might sneak in there...though I need to play more.

SFIV came out February 2009!

So here we are. Halfway done with 2009 and boy oh boy oh boy is it flying by! It's a perfect time for one of those cheesey posts that we've seen in video game forums since the dawn of time... what's the best game you've played this year and what are most looking forward to in the second half of the year? I'll start off...
I'm tempted to give it to Punch-Out. The game is a lot of fun, and I had a hard time prying the controller out of anyone's hands who I let play. But I think I'd still have to give it to Mad World. It's an entirely unique take on a very old and dated genre. It certainly isn't going to be bringing back the beat'em up, but it was a nice way to revisit it. Plus once it got going it was addictive as hell. It didn't take me long to complete, but I was pretty immersed in it to the point where my wife referred to herself as "my other wife." Ouch.
And for the rest of the year I'm crossing my fingers that Dragon Quest IX gets released this year. Not sure how the last delay in Japan is going to affect that. If that doesn't make it out this year, then I'd have to go with The Night Game. Despite all the big profile games, there's something about this little game that has clicked with me from the second I saw the first video. The music, visuals, gameplay. . . it's all so simple but it just looks perfect to me.
