Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil both are amazing but every other Turok game after Seeds of Evil has been crap.
Rage Wars, Turok 3: Shadows of Oblivion, Turok: Evolution, and Turok (Reboot) have all been terrible.
The team that worked on the first two Turok games left Iguana to form Retro Studios after Seeds of Evil.
The whole series isn't mediocre but Assassin's Creed II stands out as the absolute best of that series.

Where's Fallout Boy when you need him?
I think this mostly happens when a new series appears and the first or second game really nails it. Sales are good, so the publisher wants to turn it into a full blown franchise, but there's just too little room for improvement. You see this with a lot of franchises in my opinion. Most of the games listed here so far fall in that category. The games mentioned aren't head and shoulders above the other games in the series, it's just that they were the ones that perfected the formula.

Happens with most bands or music groups too. You see a lot of bands basically just releasing a slightly different take on the same album time and again. And usually, the ones who don't do this, well, you wish they did.
As for serious contender, I'd have to say Xenoblade Chronicles. The Xeno series before didn't cut it, and XCX, with all respect, isn't half the game Chronicles was. Sot here you have it. the best JRPG in a decade, part of a mediocre franchise.

Am I doing this right?
With so many ridiculous answers, I am not sure if you're doing it right or not. And I made the damn thread.
What is a great game, possibly an absolutely legendary epic game, that came out of a series that overall was mediocre at best? Or does such a game even exist?
