And so it begins, at least in my timezone.

This is where: aspro, travo, steelattack, robio, dvader and bugsonglass will recount their first-hand experiences with THQ's Darksiders, available for 360 and PS3.  If you want to join in, you are welcome to play along, just keep the spoilers to yourself.

Okay, well being influenced by many other games is not inherently a bad thing -- just look at Uncharted.

But in the first ten minutes of play...

Before I get to that. HOLY FUCK.  I've not gone out of my way to avoid any information about this game, but what a great intro moment.

Anyway, in the first ten minutes of play I see God of War/Devil May Cry type fighting/level clearing/ navigation.  Infamous/ Crackdown elements. Marvel Ultimate Alliance in the character faces for some reason, and character models that are like those found in Too Human.

You'll want to pay attention to the story in the first ten minutes, but if you miss anything, just grab a Bible and read the Book of Revelations.

What I don't see is Zelda.  Except maybe the way the map looks.

Also played a little bit.  Nope, no Zelda yet.  I see lots of GoW/DMC except a hell of a lot more simplistic (ie just mash square until prompted to press circle).  I also don't see much point locking on any particular enemy during combat.  Seems better not to.

So far the thing I like most is the character design I think

How is that any different from GoW's gameplay? I got through GoW 2 and 3 using only the square button.

i agree GoW can also be pretty simplistic as well but at least it gives you the option to do some crazy combos etc.  You can mix it up quite a bit if you want to.  Also on occasion you are forced to change your routine eg when some enemies are vulnerable to grabs but will rip you a new one if you simply try to square them to death.  it may be because i play all GoWs on Spartan but I think it offers at least a little more depth in combat than what I've seen so far in DS.

By the way this is not a knock on DS as it's much more varied than a dedicated action game like GoW, there's quite a bit more 'adventure' in DS I think.

I also came across the first elements of gameplay which would make it Zelda-like.  Having to use a side item/weapon in a fight.

You get more moves as you go, very similar to Devil May Cry, with similar button combinations. Having finished Ghost of Sparta I don't feel the GoW combat system is any more complex either.

The dungeons are 100% Zelda. That was the demo. The combat is different but the way you progress through a dungeon is identical, though not as good of course.

All I have almost all the skills ranks to the max, I have done all the strangers, I have done all those action combat areas, I need a few more suits and that is about it. There isn't much more for me to do than finish the story which is what I am trying to do. Later I will come back and sweep up for trophies and try some of the online.

I like how the gameclock only measures time in the game (and not when you pause it).

I found the first boss a bit weak, but I guess it was prologue rather than a real level/boss.

Definitely feeling God of War with this game. Just without the breasts. Maybe those come later.

So far I like it. I'm about 2 or 2 1/2 hours in so far. It's more linear than I expected. Virtually no exploration at all, though like the breasts.... maybe that comes in later.  Characters have been great though. Joe Madueria may be a douchebag, but he can design some good characters.

Oh and the one real unexpected thing so far is how much my wiife has gotten into this game. This is a woman who generally likes the Sims, Spyro and iPhone games. But she's really gotten into the storyline of this one. Not entirely surprising given her tastes in apocalyptic and demonic movies, but I still thought she'd just brush this aside and ignore me while play as per usual.

What a great start to the game. Graphics are a bit ugly but that is no problem. I am enjoying it so far, only in the first hour.

Yeah, they have that intro and your like, "yeah yeah, dragons, blah blah, swords, seals, okay whatever" then they drop you in THAT setting and it's like WTF?! (In a good way).

I am going to get 2 hours in tonight.  Who is Joe Madueria?
