While trying to get GodModeEnabled to post on this site, he/she/it gave this reason for not visiting out site.

"My problem with really coming involved in your guys's excellent site is that our gaming tastes and opinions are so fundamentally different that id feel like an outsider looking in. GG and all you guys are people I miss a lot, but im not sure im a good fit for your site."

Angry Beaver added

"Regarding The VG Press, I'd say it probably is rather alien to your taste in games. While there are conversations and such about Xbox 360 and PS3 games, there's a huge focus on the Wii. And really, right now I don't fit too well at either GameSpot or The VG Press: console-wise I only own a Wii, so you'd think I'd fit in more there; but I'm not into Raving Rabbids, Animal Crossing, Trauma Center, and other such games, so I have so little to discuss over there."

As some of you might know, GME is not a big Wii-fan! He actually sold his, so the reason why he is not here is because he thinks that we are too Nintendo centric with respect to his own tastes.

I want to hear your guys opinion on this, especially from guys who are not Nintendo fans.

The questions are:

  • Is our news coverage in GG-weekly to much focussed on the Wii and DS and why?
  • Do we lack coverage on some platforms? (for example PC news, PSP news, etc)
  • Is Nintendo criticism not accepted in this forum?
  • Are the users big Nintendo fanboys that smother any discussion?
  • Do we lack PS3, 360 and PC discussions? (Well d'oh)
  • Why do Sony/PS3 and PC guys not start these discussion themselves?
  • What can we do to increase the number of PS3/360/PC discussions?
  • Why has Hamster such crappy taste in games?
  • How big are Steel's ballz?

I especially want opinions of Angry_Beaver, Edge, Archie, Vader, Homer, Ragnaar (I can still hope) and all the other non-Nintendo fans/Nintendo critcs. But opinions of Nintendo fans is welcome too! I have my own opinion on this matter, but I do not want to influence your opinion, so give me yours first!

Huge focus on the Wii??? During podcasts (okay, the one I was in) I didn't even know what to say it's so Sony and Xbox driven. GTA this, Bully that, Prince of Persia blah blah blah.

- Wii & DS are the most innovative and best-selling so naturally there is more to say about them. What is there to say about Sony and Xbox? Oh Halo 3 came out, LittleBigPlanet and Home came out, that's pretty much it besides hundreds of generic shooters. (If you think differently, start bringing more Sony & Xbox & PC news to our attentions.) Hype your own games... we aren't going to the trouble to create discussion about stuff we aren't personally interested in or going to play.

- I think PC is the most under-reported and under-represented system here, but PC gaming seems to be generally dying in relation to consoles anyway.

- Nintendo criticism is accepted when warranted... look at Wii Music

- To the rest of the questions... we have very few members. We happen to be inevenly distributed, partially as a result of the low number of active members. So basically we don't have enough members and this results in an imbalance towards Nintendo.... which makes people who don't like Nintendo not want to join? Which creates a vicious circle.

If you want to see a change, make it yourself! Get involved! Start making non-Nintendo threads, post non-Nintendo news articles in GGWeekly. Tell Yoda, Darth, and Foolz that you want to join the podcast with them and suggest non-Nintendo topics ahead of time that you want to discuss. Yoda isn't going to ban you because you aren't a Nintendo fanboy Nyaa. If you aren't on the site trying to make a difference, no complaining allowed when it becomes a hamster-filled Animal Crossing gay lovefest. It's your job to slap us upside the head from time to time and say HEY FAGS STOP PLAYING WITH YOUR WIIS AND SHOOT STUFF LIKE REAL MEN.

The news is heavily Nintendo slanted in quantity because of a Nintendo tilt combined with simply a greater number of stories to cover, though I don't think there's exactly a dearth of news coverage on 360 or PS3 -- just all you news posters update a crapton of stories; PSP and PC stories are definitely the ones that are underrepresented.  Podcast will vary, but darthhomer doesn't have a Wii at all, so it's not one-sided here.

The complaint, I presume, is toward the discussion itself in the forums and GG Weekly, which is a result of who's here.  The only way to generate more community interest in alternative platforms is for people to be here to generate it.  The relative demographic here compared to elsewhere is much higher when it comes to the area of niche, clever titles as opposed to big-budget shooters, certainly.

It's not as if we've got hundreds of topics and are drowining in Nintendo.  A couple topics about Home and we're balanced out.  There's no disregard of Nintendo criticism--hell, it's the best part of the discussion.

Right now we have what, 10 regulars?  Three people join and we're slanted the other way.  We're community-driven, so we live and die by it.

BTW, while we're a gaming site, this is an open forum.  Off-topic is welcomed.

Er...I do hope we're not using my notes - there's a LOT of Nintendo related news (mainly bitching at them, really), and discussion of games on the Wii/DS (third party stuff).

To be serious for a moment though, I do think there's just a tad too much Nintendo news. It's not surprisingly really - we don't have the numbers of something like Gamespot, and of all the members that we have, a lot of the dudes that contribute here to the GG Weekly own Wii's, where only smaller numbers of us game mostly on a PS3, 360 or PC.

This week's focus on Nintendo is justifiable though - DQIX getting a release date, DQX getting announced, and the GIGANTIC NPD WIN.

But Yarco is totally right about involvement. I mean, the GG weekly is opened up now that ANYONE can contribute news stories - people like GME or Angry Beaver could contribute news about whatever they feel is interesting and non Nintendo related, or start discussions about how the PS3 isn't selling well enough or why the Xbox 360 only matters for shooters and nothing else.

And hey, if it's interesting, we'll discuss it.

LOL, this shouldn't even be a question. This is basically my wii forum, it seems all Wii owners from GS were exiled and most came here. We do have stories from everywhere but there is no doubt this site is mostly about Nintendo.

As for news that is mostly myself and others fault, normally you search for news for the consoles you own, I have kind of let off that.

But as a straight answer, yeah this is a nintendo centric site. I dont mean in that this is a Nintendo bias site, thats a huge difference, no you guys are open to everything and we talk about everything. Its just that here I am practically alone with the PS3, its like me and Homer. No one really talks 360. Here I think all of us have a wii. When I talk about a PS3 game I feel like I will end up with a discussion with myself, cause no one else will play it. Even with LBP which we did talk a lot about it was basically me explaining it to you guys, there was no back and forth between people that have the game. On the other hand I can come here and talk about Mushroom Men and not get looked at like I am some alien as I would at GS.

I noticed this and have avoided new non-Wii/DS topics, assuming there wouldn't be much interest.

That said, nothing to report right now either. Been playing Left 4 Dead, waiting to play Prince of Persia.

 WTF? LOL

BTW, I've been playing a TON of The Orange Box (between Animal Crossing sessions, of course WinkWink ) this week on my manly Xbox 360!

I'm going to continue posting Nintendo topics/news because that's what interests me most. If people don't like that, then they should post other stuff. The gaming industry is HUGE, and there's a lot of stuff that's not Nintendo related out there. I will post responces to those threads/news articles if I'm genuinely interested in the topic, but I won't if I'm not. Happy

I was going to post an The Orange Box thread, but decided not to since the game is pretty old now. I decided to put something about it into my blog after I finished it. Now, who knows . . .

Oh, and I have AWESOME taste in games. You guy's tastes in games is the only thing that sucks. Nyaa

Fact: This week there are 127 non-nintendo updates on the weekly page. That's more than most sites have in a month, or 5 months even. Think about that for a second. 127 things you could have posted, or commented on, or questioned, or read.

Do you know how depressing it is when it seems like me, someone without a PS3, seems to be the only one looking at and posting PS3 updates? I know for a fact that there are PS3 owners here, so why when I post 50 Killzone 2 pics am I the only one looking at them? Why is it when I post a great Killzone 2 preview, no one even blinks?

Do you know why I posted so many threads on gamespot everyday? Because I was bored, because no one was talking about what I wanted to talk about, because no one was even trying to create discussion. Do I own a PS3? No, do you see me posting a big Aquanaught's Holiday thread? Yes.

I want people to talk about what they want to. The updates are open to all, if you have something to talk about then you have to talk about it, create the discussion, post your thoughts. In reality did I think anyone was really interested in a review of DVD player? Probably not, but I wanted to share, I wanted to talk so I took five minutes and typed it up.

We are suffering here from a small userbase of active posters. People like Godmode or whatever, if they feel there is a lack of discussion on the things they want to talk about, they have to post it in the first place. When I get a new game that others dont have, I give impressions, I make a thread I see who's interested even if there aren't people interested: see Call of Duty. Me and Ravenprose have excitedly driven an Animal Crossing thread to over 130 posts. Don't tell me that others can't do the same.

I want to see you talking about the latest games you've played, I want to know all the latest info and impressions about what Fallout 3 is like, about how the story is, I want to know about Gears of War 2 so when I get it I can post my impressions. I want to get excited about it. But you have to frigging post what you want to in the first place. Not just sit there and think there is nothing there.

Home just frigging launched, I posted the story in Gold. Where is the thread for this? Where is the excitement? I see it hidden in a blog, but where are the PS3 owners excitedly talking about this new and exciting enviroment? I'm a passion driven gamer, like Leo in some respects. I want to see you excited, I want to see you posting. I virtually ran an Endless Ocean thread to 9 pages on Gamespot by myself. Firstly because of curiosity and then because of love for the game.

I wanted HiRes here because he and I and Dutch were the guys posting 360 news on the GGD and I wanted him to take some of the heat off me posting here and discussing things.

I can't tell you how happy I was to see Edgecrusher post some threads a couple of weeks back. Sure it was funny:

"Square Enix sucks, who's with me?" LOL But that's why I love Edge. But then he disappears.

Another couple of things to note is firstly, nintendo platforms make up 50% of the gaming market as a whole and their platforms are so controversial compared to the "safe" expected approaches of the others that it does stir more discussion.

When PS2 was dominating the market, did you see complaints that there was no GC discussion on GGD? 50% of the market, they are dominant and popular so it's not suprising to see the news.

Secondly, people who do the updates here use gonintendo.com and they can easily just scroll and update easily from one source. That's the main reason, it's so easy to source from that site and run the updates in a list.

Dvader I get your point on LBP but that is great example of you creating a thread you want to talk about and sharing your passion for the game. That is what I want to see more of. On the other hand, no one here owns Mushroom Men either, so it's not like you've got nintendo nerds going hyper over Mushroom Men and ignoring LBP. I'm the type of gamer that wants to know everything, even for stuff I will never get to try, so I want to hear about all these things. They may be for games I will pick up months down the line, but it gives me something to look forward to and excites and enthuses me.

There's also the issue of not following up to your threads, if you posted a thread, you have to keep up and not just abandon the issue.

Most of all we are suffering in membership, it's up to YOU guys, yes you because I no longer post at Gamespot, to reccomend and badger guys to come and post here and talk about the stuff they want to talk about.

Get Archie, Dutch and HiRes in one room and you have as much 360 passion as you will ever see Wii passion here. I know there are at least 4 people here with PS3s that can enthuse about their platform but they don't because we have a small membership and it's more likely that on a huge public gaming forum there would be higher numbers there.

But again, look at the Animal Crossing thread, it's many pages long, there are well over 100 posts. If you are passionate about a game then talk about it. This site can have the discussion you want if you generate that discussion. But it's the responsibility of everyone here to reccomend new people and badger old favourites to show up.

There are couple of site issues that I have a bug bear with, that I think could be changed to encourage participation, a front page overhaul for a start and highlighting new content.

Like Wrath of Khan?

I just mean that you talk about what you want to talk about and if you never post anything you will never know.

When I was doing the updates all by my lonesome I actually asked who wanted me to keep posting certain types of news?

PSP and PC are virtually dead here, but aside from PC virtually no one cares. I don't think the forums are nintendo slanted at all, the LBP thread has as many, if not more posts than the soul bubbles thread. What I want to see is people who have played the same games like Dead Space etc, to talk about it and discuss it.

Actually there was quite a good day for PC news today. About the PSP, I went to Eurogamer and clicked the PSP icon. So here I am in the Eurogamer PSP site. Then I click on the main story: a review of R-type something. The date of the article is 25 november LOL

PSP news is not dead here, it is dead everywhere!

Great post GG, and I totally understand the news thing. Partly my fault, I have been playing so much that looking around for updates for games I wont be playing for a while does not interest me unless its amazing, like Killzone (which you already had up by the time I got here). Also I dont think you guys should be trying to find news, let it find you. Dont put up every single preview of every single game you see, if there are 5 new measly pictures of old locations in a certain game

there is no point in adding it as a story.

As for the topics, you are totally correct that its our passions and such that drives discusion. The issue for me is that I feel alone here, LBP was an example but I was so in love with that game that I had enough energy to fuel a whole thread here. But what about Tomb Raider, I dont care for that game, if no one else is going to engage me in a discussion I will go nowhere with it. Like you said no one played Mushroom Men, what I was saying is that if I post that in GS people will probably laugh at me, here it was a talked about game. But you are correct no one else played it so I have no where else to go.  Prince of Persia, anyone? The thing is I can go to GS and talk about these games with others who have played it, so I end up spending my discussion time there. Home, same there, I dont particularly like it but at least I can talk about it with others there. I forgot to cut and paste my impressions though so I will do that for you guys.

I go where that particular discussion is going. If I get Animal Crossing you bet I will be spending time talking about it here. And with big time games I love I will be everywhere. Believe me when RE5 hits I will have megathreads all over the place cause I am passionate about that game.

There are PS3 owners here, Leo, Edge, yourself, Darth, Foolz, Punk?

I'm suprised that everyone doesn't own LBP to be frank. And there are others here who are/were interested and did play Tomb Raider. On the other hand, yeah there is no one here playing Mushroom Men other than you anyway so its the same situation, it's not just a Nintendo thing. I'm the only guy playing Soul Bubbles and COD WOW, still no one to talk to, but that's half the point in that you can give impressions that no one else can.

Fact is that there are just too few people here. I don't have another board to go to, so maybe if I were in your situation I would do the same. But I would like to think that if say, you Edge, Archangel and a couple of others started a thread on say Fallout 3, that if Dutch, or Godmode came here, they might want to join in.

And then in a couple of months when I get it, I would join in.

But if there is nothing there, then there is nothing to talk about. I remember when you and I and Godmode took a blog to 50+ posts talking about Fire Emblem Path of Radiance.

Showing passion for a game makes people want to pick up said game and then join in a discussion. Not many people were interested in Endless Ocean but a NeoGAF mega thread certainly got people interested. They have the numbers though, we don't.

But you can see what happens when you do hit upon a hot topic, the 3rd party Wii situation for instance, for this place got a pretty big response and some decent debate. Even with a limited number of posters.

Use the same theory, hit upon a topic, even be controvertial to stimulate debate if you want and see what happens by creating a topic.

EDIT:

I don't see it as a problem of being Nintendo centric or what not, I see it as a lack of users and that leading to a lack of participation.

GG you are correct, as i said its not just about Nintendo, we are a small community and it so happens that the majority of us here have a wii, its the one thing we can all talk about.

As for topics, yeah I agree but lets take fallout 3 for example. I will get it on christmas, I can start a thread here, I am sure you and a few others will have questions. But would Edge and Angel really post here, they (Im not sure if Angel has it, but lets just use him as an example) have already posted tons and tons of impressions at GS. They do talk to others about the game on the GS thread. Why would GME or Dutch come here when they already have a discussion thread? For me, sure I can keep you guys updated on what I am doing but honestly I rather be taking part in the big GS thread (I will do both). Again its not our fault, GS has a lot more members, its a combination of being small and being late with a few games that really hurts.

I think I can understand your frustration GG, its kind of a catch 22, we need more members to create more gaming threads but more members wont come unless those threads are there. Also remember its not my main forum, I write on different boards, right now I am giving this place my full attention, its nice, I can read threads I missed on, finally chat with you guys, but during the week i am usually looking for a discussion on certain games to jump into and many times its not on this board.

I dont know how to fix it, those guys at GS need to make an effort to come here but they seem fine with what they have there. Its maybe time to find new people.

Arrrrrgh! I just had a nice long post lost in the ether.

Anyway long story short I agree that more people are needed with a broader range because there are simply too much for only a few people to talk about, I like to play alot of games and I'm sure you guys do too so it's pretty hard to keep up-to-date posting on most of the big topics and/or games, at least I find it hard too.

Sorry guys but I've never been a newshound type or "mege-thread" starter so that's why I never offer my services for those types of things.
