in no way or form contradicts what i just wrote. The fact that you (I like watching them as well) enjoy your fair share of summer flicks because they provide you with entertainment doesn't negate their glaring flaws in many regards. They provide mindless fun. That's it. I was a bit surprised by GG's reaction to the movie because it sounded like James Cameron himself promised him something like The Seven Samurai and all he got was a turd.

I went to watch Avatar expecting special effects. I got them, and was entertained. I won't say it'll be my top movie of the year or whatever, but I knew exactly what was I getting. There's not much more to deconstruct from the movie other than its technical achievements.

I watched Resident Evil: Afterlife tonight, and I enjoyed it greatly. It's pretty much on par with the other RE movies, so it was kick ass. For those planning on seeing it (cricket sounds), be sure to watch the ending credits.

Just saw it, my god that movie is stupid and bad, but so are all of them so that isn't saying much. Its still not as good as the first one, that will remain the only decent movie of the bunch but its better than the atrocity of 2. So its somewhere tied with RE3.

SPOILERS BELOW

The beginning was idiotic and was only there to remove Alice of her powers, ending that stupid storyline but also making the last movie completely pointless. Then the movie dragged for a while but at least that meant there was some attempt at character development, of course it failed. You meet a boring group of survivors, much like you do in each of these films, throw away characters you don't care about. Every single potential good story arc was ruined, like Chris reuniting with his sister oops Claire doesn't remember anything doesn't matter anymore move along.

For a moment though there was a hint of tension and something that resembled a decent build up to the action. The prison break in scene was handled well and I felt that maybe the movie had found its groove. Sadly way too many slow motion shots killed any hope of the action being interesting, the movie was just trying to hard. The Executioner fight was ridiculous, I was having RE2 flashbacks.

The best part of the movie was Wesker, thankfully. It wasn't perfect Wesker, there were hints of his character like when he shoots a guy for speaking back to him, that was perfect. The actor was trying to hard to be the video game Wesker and it didn't come off as a genuine performance, also they stripped him of his entire history and motivation, you get a shell of what Wesker is supposed to be. Here is a character with excellent potential to be a great bad guy for the series, to put an actual face to the villains but they throw it away. I don't know how people who don't know about the games are supposed to understand who he is. Out of nowhere he seems to know Chris and Claire, really?! The movie never showed that they have a history and Chris doesn't seem to know who he is. And the whole evil mastermind plot is to ingest Alice, that's the story of the movie, holy crap.

At least the fight was cool it was just like the game though probably not as good. Wesker had a aura about him, for once these movies had a villain that can match this superwoman they created. Of course they blow him up... so whats the point of having another movie. I don't even want to begin to think about how moronic the Jill thing is.

Lets go back and try to figure out Umbrella shall we, why do they exist? THERE IS NO WORLD!! Why is there is super secret organization with some giant private army doing evil experiments when THERE IS NO WORLD!? What possible motivation do they have for anything they are doing. The series has gotten to a point where the story makes no sense at all, its all buckling under this crap mythology Anderson created. It makes the game's storyline look like a masterpiece.

I was just on the podcast talking about this movie and I left out many things I wanted to touch on. Here are more things that made my brain hurt.

• They spend the first 10 minutes of the movie eliminating Alice's powers, as she says she is human again. The rest of the movie is her performing superhuman feats. She kicks a piece of falling glass at a zombie dog to cut it in half.
• Where in the hell did the Executioner come from? Why is this giant thing walking around LA? Why does it have a huge axe hammer thing, hell where do you get a giant axe hammer thing? The only explaination is "Hey its from RE5" so it's there.
• When Wesker injects Alice with the antivirus there is a shot of her bloodstream showing the anti virus cells killing the T-virus cells. The T-virus cells were floating "T"'s
• The chest thing, what was the point. Why did it make Claire lose her mind but all those people at the end were fine? Why does it seem to control Jill but no one else. It has no set purpose.
• I swear if you take away all the slow motion shots this movie is 30 minutes long.

IGN gave RE: Afterlife 3 out of 5 stars.

I saw this. Turned it off after 20 minutes. It was atrocious.

It's Miike's first and hopefully last English dialogue movie. A film where the great idea it to get Japanese people with the barest understanding of the English language to speak English. It's like watching a Sony press conference with the awkward translator for a whole movie. I had to put english subtitles on for people speaking english.

Saw this.

Not bad. Not as good as older Disney films but better than their recent output. The music sections are too awkward, it feels like the music is there for the sake of it most of the time.

Also:

Watch all of Firefly, it's only like 14 episodes before it was cancelled then they did Serenity the movie.

I like Existence, especially the meat guns. Videodrome, wow, flashback. Wasn't that an 80s film?

Castle of Cagliostro is also one of my favourite Miyazaki films.  It annoys me somewhat when it is considered an "early" movie and sub-standard compared to his later work with studio ghibli

Has anyone seen Arahan? It's a pretty fun popcorn flick.

Did I mention that I've seen Thirst by Park Chan Wook - Oldboy director?

It's pretty good, shocking at times, not nearly as good as Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance though. It has an ending that many will find unsatisfying though.
