Saw this, it was very good, not an all out action film as the trailer presents it. It's a very poignant film about a chinese revolitionary visiting Hong Kong to plan an uprising. The feudal royal leaders in china send assasins to kill him and ordinary people band together to protect him.
Remember to watch the proper version which is parts 1 and 2, totalling about 2 and a half hours each.
Saw this.
Pretty good, though I was expecting better.
Lead character played it for comic effect too much in the first third of the film IMO. Interesting how the film played with your emotions/expectations. At the end when you reflect on it, Christopher is the only likeable alien, while the rest act like idiots and killers.
There was a certain measure of suspension of disbelief, but it was a pretty good movie, I hope there is a sequel set 3 years later. Shame the Halo movie never got made, the action and effects were great.
Also saw this.
Pretty good, nice music and suprisingly dark in tone at times, like when the bad dude wants to have sex with the woman or burn her alive. And when he tried to throw a baby down a well.
At the end it pissed me off when Quasimodo put the good looking gals hand in the good looking guys hand. So I threw the disc on the floor in disgust. Don't worry, it was just an off TV recording.
It just didn't gel with any kind of message about Quasimodo and inner beauty and all that crap.
Oh yeah and I saw this on TV
It's better than the original IMO, but it continues the story so 1 and 2 are like 2 parts of the same thing.
I Love Huckabees: 8/10
Brilliant film, but everyone seems to hate it or misunderstands it IMO. As far as I can tell it's making fun of the philosophies in question, rather than trying to make you think about them and your life...
Easy Virtue: 6/10
"Who is this woman you have pitchforked into the family?"
Some
brilliant lines in this silent film! It's Hitchcock so there's awesome
shots etc. as you'd expect. The version I saw was only 60 minutes long
instead of the 70 or 80 minute versions, and something felt odd. If it
was a better release, would possibly get a higher score. Telephone
operator scene ftw!
Legend: 7/10
Probably the most successful Ridley Scott film I've seen. Not fantastic, but I liked it. Used to hate it. Tim Curry is always fantastic, though. Got to love Tim Curry.
Ladyhawke: 7.5
I wasn't expecting much, but this was really good! Broderick is brillaint, well so is the whole cast! Special mention to John Wood. Such brilliant pressence. And it's funny seeing Rutger Haur not playing a villain. Nicely shot too.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance/Oldboy: 10/10, 8/10
Wow, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is amazing. Better than Oldboy in every way. Better shot, better performances, better use of sound, better writing. Amazing film. It's also less violent than Oldboy, even though it's meant to be more. That'd be because the violence actually has a lot of impact, unlike in Oldboy. One of the best black comedies of all time. Masterpiece.
Oldboy is very good too, though.

WHAT.
THE.
F*CK?
I hate Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, it's the only Park Chan wook film I don't like. It's so callous, cold and violent and quiet. Less violent than Oldboy? WTF?!!!! No.
There's a distinct lack of music and of emotion and it doesn't showcase any particularly good camera work, which he is famed for. Nor does it come up with a clever, memorable ending like JSA or Oldboy.
Best black comedies of.... WTF? You found that film funny? You are one sick puppy. A black comedy is something like The Host.

There is distinctly less violence than there is in Oldboy. The difference is the violence in Oldboy has no emotional impact save for a couple of scenes, so there is seemingly far less. Count the number of fight scenes, and compare it to the number of "fight scenes" in SFMV. Hell, there's even more torture in Oldboy! The teeth scene, the self-torture in the final scene, and I'm probably forgetting something. But even at only two scenes of torture, that's twice as many as there are in SFMV.
As for calling it cold and callous definitely can't agree with you there. Of course those two things are a huge part of the film (and if they weren't, the films subject matter would be poorly represented), but it's also one of the most compassionate films I've seen dealing with such themes, and was far, far more emotional than Oldboy for me as well. I really don't see how you can think it's emotionless.
The distinct lack of music is used to wonderful effect, but not everyone is going to like a minimalist approach to sound, however I also have no idea how you can think there isn't good camera work in it. It blows away the cinematography of Oldboy for me. Every shot is perfectly composed, and used to striking effect. A lot of the shots are much more clever and creative as well.
As for the ending, yeah it's not got a flashy twist, I don't see that as a problem. I certainly find it more memorable than the ending in Oldboy, though because the ending in Oldboy only really has much impact by itself on the first viewing (and the terrorists are so brilliant!). The finale's steam is lost as soon as what'shisname shoots himself, where as SFMV keeps going until the brilliant end credits' song. Oldboy is still a great film, though.
But the fact is that SFMV is a black comedy. Doesn't matter that you don't find it funny, that's still the genre. I found it funny, but that's how humour works; not everyone will get it.
Whatever floats your boat, though.
P.S.
And you know, at least it doesn't have actual octopuses being eaten alive, unlike Oldboy. Then again it does have moths being electrocuted, so...
I found that there was less emotion attached to the violence in Sympathy, for me I got almost ZERO emotion. Which is why it felt so callous. I mean compare it with Sympathy for lady vengeance when they all gang up on that guy at the end. There is emotion there and actual sympathy.
I disagree on the camera work front, I don't know how you can even compare the films. Oldboy is recognised as a classic, Sympathy mearly looked upon.
SFMV is not a black comedy. The Host or Memories of Murder are black comedies. There is nothing to laugh about in SFMV and I really don't know how anyone could laugh at that movie. It's horrible.

You don't see it, I do, whatever does or doesn't float your boat.
Actually, SFMV is a flop, and is not even looked upon really. And in many reviews that hated it, they often say that the cinematography is fantastic, but they otherwise agree with you. Also amongst film makers it is considered by many to be a masterpiece. Both are bullshit reasons for backing up any opinions, though. I imagine that you didn't base your opinion on either film based on their reputation, and neither did I.
SFMV is a black comedy. Your reaction is not relevant. It was made with the intention of comedy. You didn't find it funny, that's fine, but it was made as a black comedy, even if it was miss-marketed as a hardboiled film which it is not in the slightest. Can't be bothered looking for any evidence here, but see director's commentary/extras where Park himself refers to it first and foremost as a comedy. That means it a comedy, whether you find it funny or not.
I feel like we're discussing whether Zelda is an RPG. Eww. I don't see that there's anything funny about Friends, and don't understand how anybody could laugh at it, but that doesn't mean it's not a comedy.
I liked it, you didn't, simple as that.
Yeah I saw both films without reading any reviews.
If it was made as a black comedy then it completely failed in its purpose.
If you are saying it's a comedy then its a woefully bad one that elicits no laughs. There is no black and white situation here. Take all the people on this site, get them to watch it and see how many come back saying its a black comedy.
Perhaps you are just a sicko.
SICKO!

Then the site has a very poorly developed sense of humour. *thinks of all the penis/testicle jokes*
Ah.
Seems to really split the critics

It will take place in the 60's, JFK is President, MLK is doing his thing and Xavier and Magneto meet at college. Xavier will not be in a wheel chair, we will see how he gets into it. The Hellfire Club seems to be the bad guys with Kevin Bacon playing Sebastian Shaw.
Strangely the first class won't be the first class at all. Seeing how far back into the past they went, having the normal X-Men on the team wouldn't fit with the timeline in the movies as Cyclops would be a baby. So no Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel or Iceman, the only member of the original team is Beast. For some reason Cyclops' LITTLE brother is in the movie, Havok. Well obviously they need to change his character around. Banshee will be in, does anyone really like Banshee. There will be a young Mystique and a bunch of people I don't even know.
This movie series has become such a mess. The timeline doesn't work, they are changing origins of these characters on the fly, and they are now making an X-Men movie with no interesting X-Men. Hopefully its an ok movie but something must be done about this franchise. I hear they are still making a young Magneto movie on top of this one. Either start over and actually do something really cool by having Apocalypse show up and change the entire timeline that way you can bring back dead characters (like Xavier and Cyclops) and make the story fit in line with the true X-Men storyline.

Yup, it's pretty much love or hate.
Don't worry Vader, we always have Wolverine Origins 2 to look forward too.
I'll get us a gun and two bullets.

I just started to watch The Wire, its on Directv now. Only two episodes in and I already feel so frustrated about the entire police system and the department shown on the show. Holy crap, I really hope the reality isn't like this but I assume it is.
Yodariquo said:^ I recently got the entire series of The Wire. I'll be watching the first season in a couple weeks once I'm done with season 1 of the Drew Carey show.
I think the wire is one of the best shows ever and i hope you are both enjoying it as much as i did. as dvader very correctly pointed out it is a commentary on the police system as well as the vices with which it is dealing with. BTW it isn't just the drug trade it deals with, that's just series 1. it tackles other big issues too in subsequent series
Yep, the trailers played it up to be Tarantino's version of the Dirty Dozen I think. Maybe a little goofier than that. Totally not what we got.
And yes Waltz played the Jew Hunter. He was pretty much the only thing that kept me watching.
