Minneapolis, nice. No comments in here, when some actual politics may be happening?

As an aside, lol@Colin Powel accusing Trump of lying and not being held accountable for his actions. If American politicians were held accountable for their actions, Colin Powel wouldn't be able to say that on account of being dead or in solitary confinement.

Strangely this news didn't feature on the top of the news site I frequent on a daily basis.  Lets see if this proves to be anything more than a paper dragon.

Oh yes, what their actual plan is who knows. Maybe they'll copy Camden (early details, and more recent commentary) or do something else entirely. Most police reform in America simply means edging closer to civilisation lol.

I was proud of Minneapolis for taking that step.  Let's see what it'll look like and how far it goes.

All in all I'm just happy that I seem to have used the saying ' a paper dragon' in the right context.

Technically I think you meant paper tiger? Unless paper dragon is something I haven't heard of.

This got me comparing origami tigers and dragons on image search and I was inclined to agree until I saw this:

LOL I love it.

Just heard that the city of New York is advising it's citizens on safe sex precaustions.

Apparently it is best to have intercourse with people outside of steady relationships through a glory hole, with the room being sufficiniently ventilated.

Of course sex within steady relationships is ok as well.

Even if it isn't through a glory hole?

Supreme Court rules workers can't be fired for being gay or transgender

This case had been pending for months and with a partisan conservative majority it looked like basic cival rights were in jeopardy for the LGBTQ+ community. This is a hugely important decision. It also indicates that while Gorsuch, who sided with the majority can be absolutely terrible (see when he suggested as a judge that a trucker should freeze to death), that he may not be entirely partisan.

It is unclear what this says about Roberts, who also sided with the majority. He very much could have been hedging if he knew how Gorsuch was voting. We already knew that Roberts cares at least somewhat about his legacy, and voting against civil rights is a surefire way to look like a dumpster fire in the long run.

As expected, Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh are hacks.

Great victory today.  I saw it on Bug's Facebook feed first and was elated.  I was a little shocked at the face turn by Gorsuch.

I read it in the news here and my first thougth was 'who would have thought that'd happen with how conservative the US highest court is these days?'.  Then I proceeded to be baffled that the article didn't even reference that anywhere.

Wow, this has gotta be one of the funniest "dog whistles" ever. Labelling anti-fascists with a red triangle, then claiming it's because they use the symbol themselves LOL. It's like calling BLM a bunch of niggas, and saying, "but we're not calling them niggers, they call themselves niggas all the time!"

I'm curious what people here think the goal of the escalation strategy in response to the protests/riots is. Extrajudicial shenanigans in America are usually limited to people sending medical supplies and food to sanctioned countries or people filming the conditions of animals in battery farms, as far as I'm aware. But those two groups have no public sympathy or publicity in the media, so you can get away with it without an issue!

Ugh, I'm going to hijack this thread to vent a bit about the political farce we ourselves are in at the moment.

Elections here were held in end may 2019, and we're still far away from a new government.  In the mean time, a minority (huge minority) government is in place.  Issue is that the Dutch speaking part of the nation voted right and the French speaking part voted left, to such a degree that the only viable option is for those 2 parties to sit together and come to any kind of agreement.  And now, facing a second corona lockdown, they've finally started talking to eachother after saying they'd never be able to be part of the same government for over a year.  Rumours are floating around that they're discussing the option of working together only for a 2 year term, instead of the usual 4, just to get the economy back on the rails with all this pandemic fallout.  And they're also openly saying that they hardly agree on anything, but have to move forward for the sake of the country.

They're probably both afraid of having new elections now, risking that their own results will be less spectacular and are gambling that in 2 years time they have a better chance of scoring well in an election.

If they do end up in one government together, I just hope they can put their own beliefs aside and get legislation through that they're both unhappy with, but will at least benefit the nation.
