I got another current gen console to not play games on, a Wii U.

$270 on Ebay for the shit 8 gb one.  Am researching SD cards now.

So if I was limited to buying only one game for it what would I get? Obviously I can buy more than one, but want answers from you guys about a single game, not a list.

Mario Kart 8 has some limited appeal. I don't like the Mario games before or after Super Mario Galaxy. Not interested in anythng that I could find on PC.

Bayonetta 2?

Get Wonderfull101.  It makes good use of the Gamepad, is a unique experience with a distinct flavour, looks great and is superior to Bayonetta.  Foolz mentioned using different tactics and weapons in Bayonetta in the latest Podcast, but he LIED!  I played the whole game with the same 2 weapons.  W101 on the other hand is much more tactical with its weapons and their different uses.  Also, like you I'm not the biggest fan of the beat-em-up, but I enjoyed nearly every second of W101.

edit: I browsed through the WiiU library online, and after giving it some more thought, I can confirm that W101 is the most fun I've had on WiiU so far.  The only other 'one' game to consider is MH3Ulitmate, but that's more due to it's great bang-per-buck rate, which isn't of that much of an importance, as your 'only one game' thing is purely hypothetical.

It's not my fault Bayonetta's combat engine is so good (unlike W101) that it accomodates people who are bad at the game like you are, and people who are good at the game like I am. (Actually, I'm not.)

Bayonetta 2 is of historical value. W101 is probably great, but it is not. And Bayonetta 2 comes with a free game!!!111

But the only answer is Splatoon. The shooter podcast has to cover it some point. Or Mario, because what console Mario have you played after SMG to say you don't like Mario after SMG?

I didn't say it was your fault, I said you were a liar  Nyaa

I think that the difference is that Bayonetta gives you all these different options, but leaves it up to you to experiment with them yourself.  They're extra levels of depth that the game does not delve into itself, they're surplus.  With W101, they're an integral part of the game, an added level of strategy required to advance.  Personally, I can never bother investing much extra-curricular thought into such systems.  I'll learn the bare minimum and make do with that.  So for me, W101 was a much better game, whereas the gameplay in Bayonetta was very repetitive.  I beat the whole game with 2 sets of weapons and 2 combo's.

I'm very hopefull for Splatoon.  I'll get it on launch myself.  I just hope that it feels enough like a Nintendo game.  It has a very Sega vibe to it from what I've seen so far.

Wonderful 101. It's what they designed the gamepad for!

SD cards are only for Backwards compat for Wii 1 use. They are completely redundant for Wii U use. You will need a USB hardrive, probably with  Y cable. Do your research first to avoid buying one which doesn't work with it, Nintendo.com has an official list, GAF has a thread to.

If you liked Mario Galaxy then you will definetly like 3D World, excellent game. It's basically the same thing but with a fixed camera and no globes.

Deus Ex is a cool game, cheap now, lots of Wii U improvements and specifics and it's a meaty hardcore game.

If you like (and are good at) Stealth games than Splinter Cell Blacklist is cool too.

But if you want 60 hrs-ish of N64-ish platforming x GTA and collecting fun with a lot of wit then Lego City is a cool game to get. Graphics aren't great but it makes up for it with the fun factor. It's better than the other Lego games I have played like Batman 2 and Marvel Superheroes.

You might want to wait till Xenoblade Chronicles X is out as that game will have over 100hrs of gameplay, can potentially last you a year and if it's anything like Xeno Wii then it will be easy to play, hassle free (apart from that Lorathia bitch) and highly enjoyable.

Also you might want to pick up the Wii U high capacity battery for better U pad battery time. You can also whack up the screen brightness to max without having to worry about battery drain.

The game does delve into it, at least on hard and in the Alfheims. And on normal you've got to be as vanilla as Aspro to do what you did. You should change your name to VanillaAC. Nyaa

I'll see if I can care enough to bother with it when I get around to playing Bayonetta 2.

Definitely get a USB HDD. The 8GB Wii U model only has abotu 3GB of user storage; the rest is locked by Nintendo for system updates.

Mario Kart, as it is easily the best MK game to date, and is my favorite game on Wii U. But you can't go wrong with Bayonetta!

Get NES Remix I & II. The levels/missions/challenges are more bite sized than Retro Gaming Challenge, but it has a similar feel. I think you'll get a kick out of it. You can get them individually digitally or both in one disc.

I will echo what Raven said about the hard-drive. Get one. Even if you don't buy much digitally Nintendo has put out a lot of great DLC for kart, Pikmin, and Smash. Plus, they haven't been shy about giving away free games to Wii U owners.

I was going to say Super Mario 3d World as its by far the best game on the console. But you hate Mario.

Therefore, I would say Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, or Zelda Wind Waker HD. Thank you.

You know, even if you don't like modern Mario games, 3-D World might still be appealing.  It's very much it's own beast, assuming you haven't played 3-D Land.

2 is easier, so there's a good chance you'll care even less. But the weapons etc. feel more different to each other than they did in 1.

Thanks for all the infos.

So increasing the SD card would do nothing for Wii U functionality and an external USB drive and bigger battery for the gamepad is suggested.

If I don't intend to download much DLC or E-store stuff could I skate by with the onboard 8 gb?  I mainly intend to Wii-Use this for disc-based games.

It's kind of borderline. You could probably get by though if you have a large size USB 3.0 stick.

Also I think you can get by without the external battery for the pad. I do fine without it. I think I've run out of juice 3 times in 2 and a half years.

Okay, I must have missed that, now I re-read. So you can just use a USB stick, that should work, htey make them plenty big these days.  Will check for compatibility on Nintendo's site.

And for me it's not going to be a "daily driver" console.
