Topic says it all.

In the last month I've re-ignited my interest in the genre (as you can tell from the latest podcast where we say everything that needs to be said on the topic).

I just started Metro 2033.  I wonder what it is about the "eastern europeans" that get this genre so well?

A recent history of civil wars, totalitarioan states, dictatorships and on-going bloody conflict?

I assume it was a rhetorical question, Bugsy.

You assume wrong!  Bugsy nailed it though.

It's probably why Australia does not produce any good FPS games, we have it too good down here.  (comically) The closest we get to making a good fps is Anti-Chamber, which is exactly what you'd expect a drugged up koala's interpretation of FPS to be.*

*Yes I know Anti-Chamber is not an FPS -- that's the joke.

By which you mean the writing in both are equally bad?

Also, make sure you try the Russian dub at least once. The level intros are the most drunken thing in any game ever.

No, I meant the book is as enjoyable to read as the game is to play.

An "assumption" and a "question" you both felt were genuine in a row. And all in the same thread...

Both Metros made me want to go back and read the source material for 2033 more than 2033. Roadside Picnic etc. But most seem to suffer from some pretty poor translations.

Now all we need is for you to call me a cunt in an endearing way and for me to take it as an insult and we can close the thread.

One thing that Bugsy didn't mention which probably contributes is the strong gun/war nerd culture in much of Eastern Europe.

That's the first I've heard of that.  Where do you get this intel?

Random places I've stumbled into on the internet, various books and catalogues, documentaries and films and all those kitschy war museums they have. But I could be completely wrong (not sarcasm). And it's not in the context of American gun/war nerd culture which is often closely linked with patriotism, so it may just not come across so blatantly.

I am really enjoying reading the book while playing the game.  Both are slightly better than average, but the game is better than the book.

Wait for Foolz to walk in here nonchalantly, wearing a scarf and talking about how how badly written everything in the world is. LOL

But unbiased. Someone once called me Pigeon in reference to some character in a book (which was probably terribly written) who would downplay their achievements for more credit when I was pointing out how bad something I wrote was.
