In the Punchout Thread Mr. Gamingeek (aka the head screwdriver of the toolshead) made the outrageous claim that all but two NES games suck and are not worth playing.  Take a moment to compose yourself, I'm sure it'll be necessary.

Now, a claim such as this doesn't need to be countered as it's so laughable the first instinct is to just ignore it.  But still I feel that the NES should be defended so please continue to read if you like.  So yes, most of the games look quite rough as they were all made 15 to 25 years ago, but there's plenty of utterly fantastic games on it.

1.  Most of the Puzzle games have held up extremely well.  Adventures of Lolo, Solomon's Key, Dr. Mario, Tetris, and the like are just as much fun to play as ever.

2.  The Arcade Classics likewise are still pretty strong.  Elevator Action, Donkey Kong 3 (so underrated), Mario Bros., Spy Hunter, etc. were all pretty decent arcade translations and still good for a nostalgia rush as well as good solid gaming.

3.  Nintendo's first party games still hold up amazingly well.  The Legend of Zelda and the Mario games still are amazingly fun to play.  Go to hell if you think differently.

I could go on, but I won't.  There's easily more than 2 dozen good quality games on the NES.  In fact, to spite you right now I'm going to go play the very broken Milon's Secret Castle.

Castlevania 3 is awesome, except when Trevor went Emo on me and committed suicide!

i've been disappointed with every NES game i bought on the VC so far.  not that i bought all that many but i bought enough to maybe realise that i should limit my nostalgic impulses to games on the better side of the SNES.  i couldn't stand kid icarus, nor kirby for more than a few minutes and i thoroughly regretted getting them.

the arcade versions of all those games you mention and all other arcade ports are so vastly superior that it makes the NES versions not worth bothering with at this stage (back then having even a half decent version of them at home was something).  they look worse, they are slower, oftentimes have whole levels and other things missing.  Tetris i can understand but the gameboy version was so much better.

i'm inclined to agree that the mario games are if not the only ones still worth playing at least some of the very few still worth playing.  i'd definitely put mario 2 there.  and also perhaps forgotten gems like faxanadu and gumshoe (though i haven't played those in years and it may be just nostalgia talking)

edit:  i am tempted by the castlevania NES games but the fact that i haven't finished super castlevania IV is perhaps a sign i shouldn't get them just yet

i just remembered 1942.  definitely one of the best NES games.  while not arcade perfect (much slower and uglier than the awesome capcom arcade) it was a thoroughly enjoyable port i spent dozens of hours playing and i think i could still enjoy today ... but still, why not play the arcade version?

You should get the Mario games.  I love them still today. I wonder if SMB Allstars will appear on the VC anytime soon.

I don't think it will show up anytime soon, but I do believe that one day it will be on the VC.  Nintendo is obviously hoping that as many people as possible pick up the original versions first so that they can double dip.  I'm sure once SMB and SMB3 leave the top 10 VC most downloaded games Allstars will show up.  I'm holding off on buying SMB 2 and 3 for that very reason.

It was a sucker move not releasing this, on GBA or VC. They would rather sell them all individually.

I personally hate that Capcom are whoring the Street fighter games on VC from normal to turbo to Super etc.

Now all I want is the arcade version of super.

Yeah, not many places you can make a thread title that makes a personal attack on another forum member.  God bless this place.

You did not insult just any member, you insulted the guy who invented GGweekly. It's like spitting in the face of God. Another reason why this site is awesome, you can insult the creator and no one really cares. Don't try it with Yoda though, he has internet powerz!

I love playing old NES games. There's a charm in those crude 8-Bit graphics and simple gameplay that I enjoy greatly. I never owned an NES back in the day, so nostalgia really has nothing to do with my enjoyment of those games either. After playing a number of great NES games on VC, I have to admit that I'm tempted to buy a real NES someday, so that I can play a bunch of games that will probably never be released on VC. The NES is like a newly discovered treasure for me. Happy

The bad thing about the VC is that there are actually some games that I had a fondness for, but now suck ass.   Kid Icarus just isn't cool anymore.

Well, there's:

  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania 3

These games are the only types of CV games that I like: linear action/platform games w/out RPG elements.

  • SMB
  • SMB 2
  • SMB 3
  • SMB: Lost Levels

Most peole love SMB games, so they are a given. However, Lost levels is probably my favorite NES game simply because of its insane difficulty. I like that everytime I play that game, I get just a little bit farther than before. Perhaps one of these days, I'll actually be good enough to finish it . . .

  • Kid Icarus

Love the music, and the gameplay, while very hard, is still fun in small doses.

  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong 3 (Galaga meets Mario Bros? awesome!)
  • Pac-Man
  • Galaga
  • Dig Dug

Granted these are just ports of classic arcade games, but I still enjoy them a lot.

  • Kirby's Adventure
  • Punch-Out!!

Simple fun.

  • Zelda
  • Zelda II

I actually like Zelda II more than the original Zelda, which is kind of surprising to me. Zelda II is a weird game, which is probably why I like it more. I still haven't finished it yet, but I will someday.

  • Mega Man 1-6, 9

Mega Man 9 isn't tecnically a NES game, but it has 8-Bit graphics and gameplay, so I consider it a lost NES game. All of the 8-Bit MM games are epic.

  • Super C

Just plain fun.

I should mention that I also like NES music. The music in these classic games really stands out as something special because it's so good despite the hardware limitations.

i also love NES music.  there are actual musicians who make their music using the NES hardware.

skylock from gamespot once did a really good 8-bit rendition of rave on from the killer7 soundtrack which i really liked listening to.
