I really liked XIII (and i don't play or enjoy too many shooters) so any comparison to that is welcome by me (even if it's just that they are both cel-shaded, french and first-person).

also prefer the idea of entries being thematic sequels like final fantasy as opposed to direct continuations of the story

Futuristic Western?

I was hoping it was going to be set in the past, but this will work too. A cell shaded futuristic samurai western does sound very interesting.  Happy

I wonder if this will set a trend. Sequels using the name and then just going wild with whatever the hell they want. Red Steel 3, as long as it has guns and sword they do whatever the hell they want?

Tropical Island Steel.

Dino Island Steel.

I doubt that is going to be the case here.  I think Ubisoft recognized that the original game was pretty broken and they needed to do something to really catch people's attention again and make it stand out.  Remember how wacked out everyone thought the screenshots of the scrapped version of Red Steel 2 were?  They wanted this game to be very different from the get go.

If this game is successful it's going to be because it's actually good, not just because it's a launch title.  And if that is the case I think they'll stay pretty close to the formula and style that is established in this game.

I dont know, those screens and art of the cancelled game are pretty wacked out. In the Nintendo Power interview they say they decided to go in a different direction when motionplus was announced, that was E3 last year and this game is set in a futuristic city? I have a feeling they adapted the futuristic bits from the previous build and just set it in the desert.

First pic. Well well, looks like the graphics may match the concept art from the first game. Not bad, very different though.

The main character is simply called "The Swordsman."
There are finisher attacks (one involves The Swordsman palm striking an enemy in the forehead and then running him through)
It says don't expect copious amounts of blood, and that they don't want gore; they don't want the player to be distracted by stuff like constant decapitations. I don't SEE blood in any of the screens, but they don't rule it out entirely.
The enemies all seem to wear metal masks. One guy wears a hooded robe sorta like Altair's.
Environments are a mix between industrial and traditional Japanese.

Well, I think commercially they just killed it. It looks too stark, barren and concept art like to be popular.

It could be a cool game but it really has become an unknown quantity compared to doing a straight up sequel. I think they should have left a reboot for when the franchise gets stale not for the immediate sequel to a launch title.

It looks awesome, and will sell at least two million copies! Grinning If it doesn't,  then Wii owners suck.

They've taken a popular commercial look and turned it into something arty and stark. This now falls into Madworld and No More Heroes territory. It has virtually ZERO link with the first game. It's a bizaare re-working. I'm not saying it wont be a cool game, but it really is a bizaare sequel.

What if Halo went cel-shaded and was set in the 14th century for instance.

if they market it nearly as aggressively as they did the first game i think they could make it grow on people by the time it's released and not just send it to die.  but i hear exactly what you're saying about making it needlessly difficult for themselves

But you'd use bows and arrows. And you were turned off when Excitetruck went from trucks to robots.
