Sadly the game doesn't look as good as it did in the previews on my TV. HD victimizes another Wii game. SMG2 and Red Steel 2 looked amazing on my TV, I dont get it, some games look fine others get that grainy look to them.
On the big screen HDTV, Sonic Colours appears to have lots of jaggies and the screen response isn't up to scratch. On SDTV it's great, sonic's character model is so clean it looks like FMV, but its not.
This game is !!!!
Some of these levels are blowing me away, not just the big ones, there are smaller levels that have a platforming hook to them. Like one had this spring platform that follows you around and you have to bounce on it to avoid obstacles and get rings. The wisps totally add the Mario feel to the game, this is a key element that has been missing from Sonic. One level was designed all around the green wisp which allows you to float upward. The whole level is a vertical with all sorts of paths, enemies, switches and other things to hit as you ascend using your power. Its wild to see actual platforming vareity in a 3D Sonic (which is actually mostly 2D).
Then there are the major levels that have so many paths, it will take many playthroughs to see them all. Like the best 3D Sonic levels when mastered the levels offer a big thrill. Yes the wisps slow things down a bit, so its not like Unleashed where everything is moving at 1000 mph constantly but its a welcome change, it offers exploration to the mix.
The only negatives I can find is that the bosses are kind of crappy. Also you will fly through this game, some levels are super short and there is no rhythm to when you will get a large one and when you get a small one. I find myself bouncing around new levels, old ones, that sonic arcade thingy.
Ok must get back to playing!
i enjoy reading vader's impressions much more than i'd actually enjoy playing the game myself, and this is something i'm 100% sure of

I think you'd enjoy it, it's got tons of 2D sections. Almost like the better 2D games on WiiWare.
Sonic Colours Aussie Nintendo review "The level design is excellent, there's a heap to do, and its replay value is through the roof"
So yeah, Sonic Colours is thoroughly enjoyable. Production values are amazing – it looks and sounds great. The level design is excellent, there's a heap to do, and its replay value is through the roof. After what seemed like an eternity of embarrassing themselves on the dance floor, SEGA finally got there. Where? Dancing… what? Seven thumbs up.

I didn't like that level because sometimes it follows you and then it has this invisible cut off point where it stops and you just drop to your doom.

I love the smaller, shorter levels and being able to chop and change between them easily. The rankings really give the game a cool arcade game feel, so it has that just one more go feel to it.
The only problem I have is that like you said to explore some levels, it's not like mario where it is left to right. This game has got stuff on top, down below, to the left, to the right, all over the place. When I get the drill wisp and start drilling I always stop short because I fear drilling off the bottom of the level.
The aquarium place levels are aweeeesome too.
This game is really good, I mean, it's not mario galaxy or anything but it's a good, if not great platformer. What I like about it is that it's still recognisable as a Sonic game and because of that the gameplay still resembles sonic but the level design and new elements like power ups (wisps) just add some variety.
It's just nice to see good 2D level design.
^ Yup, its still not Mario Galaxy, hopefully no one plays this game with that in mind. But besides Mario Galaxy 2, this is one of the best platformers of the year. I know Kirby got tons of love but that game seemed to offer zero challenge and I require some type of challenge in my platformers. So far I like it more than NSMB Wii.
OMG the game has a challenge mode where you have to play every act in the world back to back to back and it keeps adding up the score of all levels into one mega score! So to do a perfect run on that would be a perfect world run, holy crap!

So that's pretty much a hardcore Sonic fan's wet dream huh?

I agree.
I am 4th place in Sweet Mountain Act 1, and I am the first place guy before the cheating scores start.
I am also 2nd place in 1-1 of the simulator and I am top 20 other various acts. I wish the ranking page wasn't such a pain in the ass. I bet a lot of people aren't uploading their scores.
I am having so much fun S ranking these levels, I forget that I still have three full worlds to do.

The music, when orchestral is great, very reminiscent of Mario Galaxy type music and they seem to have taken the space theme from Galaxy. Unfortunately so far the actual music in the levels is all synth-pop.
don't mean to be pedantic, or obnoxious, but synth-pop per se needn't be bad. the pet shop boys, depeche mode, erasure, new order (and a lot of the good music in vader's and DJ Fernando's 80ies music thread) released a lot of good synth - pop. so if you want to say sonic has cheesy, shite, generic midi music - say that, don't just say it's synth-pop (in a derogatory way).
Yeah, the Sonic music isn't anything like that stuff.

It would be really cool if there was an online mode where you could race against each other to the end.
I know the ranking system on the Wii is a pain, having to wait a minute just to see a tiny piece of the rankings. So I will put them here.
Here is my friend code: 4469-7544-2280
These are some of my scores and ranking as of last night on the levels I have tried to get an S rank on.
Tropical Resort Act 1 - 1428250 (Rank 11)
Tropical Resort Act 3 - 1693700 (11)
Sweet Mountain Act 1 - 1562000 (4)
Sweet Mountain Act 2 - 1444910 (7)
Sweet Mountain Act 4 - 931460 (15)
Starlight Carnival Act 1 - 1216350 (45)
Starlight Carnival Act 2 - 1033930 ( 8 )
Starlight Carnival Act 4 - 1189720 ( 8 )
Planet Wisp Act 3 - 1360800 (3)
Game Land 1-1 - 360800 (2)
You should se the way mario kart wii handles ranks and times. It's excellent and really.... Nintendo like.
Finished the main story.
Asteroid Coaster was excellent. The other level after it kind of disappointing. Final boss was very well done, I wouldn't say the best Sonic final boss but not one of the worst.
I am wondering where are all the hard levels some reviews talked about? I never noticed a difficulty spike. I didn't find levels that had a bunch of random drops, maybe one or two but you quickly memorize it. I just see a well made game from top to bottom.
That said the way the levels are ordered feels so random. You never know when you are going to get a full level or one of these almost mini levels. It gives the game a sort of uneven feel. Also none of the levels are as epic as the main Unleashed levels, some come very close though. Thankfully the overall quality of the levels is always high, can't say the same for Unleashed.
I have a lot more red ring finding and S ranks to get too, now is when I will really sink my teeth into the game.
