BTW Raven you need to play Dive: The Medes Islands Secret. The guys who built it (Cosmonaut) licensed the NyxQuest engine to make it, and while it's a very different kind of game it still has a NyxQuest feeling. I hesitate to call it the underwater version of NyxQuest, but you will feel the similarities in the game.

Nice that LKS and Killer 7 were mentioned.

Does it have to be a game with no sequel?

Or can franchises which are unique unto themselves count?

If so I would say:

endless_ocean.gif

Calm, tranquil, frequently beautiful, addictive and wow inducing.

And this:

The only game I've played which is almost like reading a great crime novel. It makes the stories of most games seem like childish, testosterone fueled, self indulgent wank fests.

It's unique, I mean we're used to it not but remember when it was first unveiled? Aha like black and white?

I was really going for those one of a kind, stand-out, single game experiences. The ones that may not have been commercial powerhouses but people loved nonetheless, that some gamers would kill to have a sequel to...

Not exactly an outstanding game, but one example would be:

Mischief Makers (N64)

...or, maybe for YOU it would be:

I didn't like Michief Makers.

Yeah I guess Hybrid Heaven would be on there, for the combat system. It was rough around the edges but for the N64 a pretty unique game I'll always remember. It was sort of like the N64's Metal Gear game with all the cutscenes and full voice acting and darker vibe.

And let's not forget this beauty.  World of Goo is one of the few games in recent years that occupied my every thought during the time I was playing it, and for some time afterwards and it's truly one of a kind not just because it wasn't made into a franchise but also because there's nothing quite like it

PERFECT!

I don't want to dominate this topic either --BUT-- besides practically everything Treasure makes, this game ESPECIALLY deserves to be in here (and shame on you if you've never played it!):

Never before and never again will a known-character-based game be done as well as Astro Boy: Omega Factor! KICK-ASS game-play, showcasing some of Treasure's finest work. Multiple endings and game-paths. A story that truly touches your heart. One of the GBA's FINEST hours!

Endless Ocean, Okami, Hotel Dusk, and stuff like Ghostbusters, Panzer Dragoon Saga, are part of of a known series. I bet TWEWY gets a sequel soon. There are very few good games that are totally original and never get a sequel.

I agree on most, but C'mon, Panzer Dragoon Saga is a whole other beast altogether! It wasn't even the same genre as the other games!

ARRRGGHH stupid site. Saga is different enough to be a side game but its still under the Panzer Dragoon franchise umbrella. I want to see completely original games.

Meh, don't be so anal, otherwise you can just call Vagrant Story a medieval fantasy Parasite Eve, or hell, just a dungeon crawler, and fit most of the other games here in a particular genre... There are no 100% unique games.

And yeah, my addition to the list is Parasite Eve. Yeah it has sequels but all have different gameplay and style. I'm speaking mostly of the first. Modern day JRPG with random battles yet a hybrid system like Vagrant Story. It's a flawed game but rather epic and one of my favorites, like Xenogears.

And holy shit at some of the FMV. Their human character models mostly suck by today's standards (better than FFVII though!) but almost everything else still looks pretty damn awesome.
