Do you remember when Phil Spencer put out some memo saying that "we lost" the most important generation?

That being the PS4 generation? I think he was saying it because that's when mass digital game ownership started. And now people feel entrenched with whatever collection they've built up over the years.

I didn't really feel it before, but now having bought so many Switch 1 games and being able to carry it across to the following platform.

I do feel entrenched. How about you?

Yeah, that’s definitely what he was talking about. Nowadays people have a user profile attached to any given company’s ecosystem. Contains a whole host of things such as digital games, friends list, achievements/trophies, etc. The longer people stay in that ecosystem building all those things up, the more entrenched they’ll get and won’t want to give them up. This is why I think Nintendo would be wise to implement their own achievement/trophy system as well.

That new Metroid preview was pretty awesome. This was informative: "Abilities include power beam. The ability to jump."

Digital Foundry found the Steam Machine struggles with ray tracing.

During the RT test in Cyberpunk 2077, the frame rate crashed with Ray T turned onracing into the unplayable range (~30 fps), exposing
RT performance as a weak point
- Choosing to pivot to a point in the Steam hardware stats carries the risk of leaving buyers behind in terms of future viability (VRAM/RT issues).

Switch Up is normally pretty good. But the informal chats are a bit useless.

When Mark said "the ability to jump" I had a side eye moment.

I can't even be bothered cancelling Netflix for a month and trying something new.

There seems to be lots of side characters you have to work with. Im worries the isolated atmosphere will suffer.

So I played the first fight in Yakuza Kiwami, combat seems pretty simple, hit, grab, heavy attack and use chairs to beat people.

Does it get more complicated? I like best em ups so its fine so far.

Yakuza did feel overwhelming at first, but everything falls into place. Just got to give it a little bit of time.

And at no point is the combat ever complex, but there are skill trees that will open up more moves and more styles.

That's good. I prefer brawlers over anything more complicated.

Played around a bit on a couple of new purchases:

Cloudpunk is good, its a narrative chill out game. If you like Cyberpunk environments and like the voxel art you're already going to enjoy it. I like the different camera perspectives you can flip through in 3rd person. Lots of voice acting too.

Aragami reminds me of Tenchu. What's cool is that you can kind of turn into a spirit to switch between cover points and move through the environment. Its almost like Portal with ninjas and a lot less disorientating.

Yakuza Kiwami is 60fps and looks very cool. Japan is one of the few places in Asia I've always dreamed of visiting but have not been able to. So walking through these streets is a virtual slice of a dream come true. The fighting is quite fun and instant, nothing too complicated. The cutscenes are good, some are overly long, it almost feels like watching a movie at times, the Switch 2 auto dimming kicked in twice because I hadn't touched the controller in so long.

Anyhow, I'm heading back into Hitman WOA, there's a lot of walking to be done.

It's not the best worst song, it's just bad.

So now I own a decent selection of Switch 2 games, I've reached the point where everything looks great.

It doesn't matter if it's a port that was originally released on ps4 or a high end game that only exists on current gen - they all look great.

Sure there are differences between them, some have better geometry, so have better textures or character models.

But it doesn't really matter when in general it all looks great to me.

It's an unusual, but also inevitable conclusion to ever improving hardware.

I can see now why PS4 gamers were generally happy with visuals and not hugely blown away by even better visuals now.

Yep, the PS5 generation is the first time I was not wowed by the improvements made.

PS6 is coming in two short years and the graphicsl improvements will be legendary! Just look at the massive improvements PS5 Pro brought us! When you zoom into the far, far background, the details are a bit sharper, right? Now double that distance and triple that sharpness and we have the mighty PS6! Nyaa
