VR makes me wish 3DTVs had caught on with gaming. For me everything about VR is optional except for the 3D display. The added depth perspective in racing, flying and first/third person games adds a lot to the gameplay by being able to better judge distance and size in 3D space. The 3DS' tiny screen size and low resolution hampers that effect at lot but I still preferred playing those games with 3D enabled.

I never tried 3DTVs when they first came out but Digital Foundry spoke positively about it on one of their recent Q&A videos.

Interestingly, six months or so ago, Samsung showed off a glasses-free 3D gaming monitor at CES (it works similar to the New 3DS with built-in eye tracking cameras). No idea if it will ever come to market or if it would even sell well if it did, but I like the idea. I suspect I'd like it a lot more than VR.

I think a lot of the value of VR is the 6DoF aspect of it, more so than the fact it's actually 3D.  Being able to look out your side window when driving is much more of a game changer than it actually being stereoscopic 3D.

6DoF is a game changer. Unfortunately, for me it also often leads to motion sickness. I love 3D gaming but I have a love/hate relationship with VR because of it. A month later and I still can't play for more than an hour a day. I do enjoy that hour, though.

Edit: 6DoF is the only reason I know there's random wildlife in GT7. I was doing time trials on an Australian track and  happened to look out my car's side window to see a kangaroo hopping across a large grassy field. That was cool.

So anyone hyped for the new 'the Legend of Link' game in which you play as Zelda?  there was a new trailer released yesterday.

Personally I'm not feeling it.  Zelda games hinge on the balance between combat and puzzles, and by relegating combat to an indirect affair, it too becomes puzzley in nature.  I also don't know how long I'll find conjuring beds out of thin air amusing.  Not a fan of the graphical style either.

But hey, the kids are super enthousiastic, so I'm sure I'll play it anyhow.

I really want to be, but honestly I've sworn off buying Zelda games. I've never finished a single one of them.  It looks super cute. I may get it for the kid.

Wouldn’t say that I’m exactly hyped for it but I am interested in it. Will see what reviews have to say about it first to consider if I want to pick it up or not.

So is anyone following the olympic games?  I'm not much of a sports fan myself, but I do enjoy the stories of complete and utter failure with sympathy.  Such as that of the Judoka from Kiribati who travelled 14k kilometers to the games only to get beaten in a mere 5 seconds.  Or the Belgian rower who was in first but got some weeds stuck on his paddel and dropped to last, only for the IOC to recognize the situation and let him pass to the next round regardless.  Or the most recent one I just read of Alison Gibson who dove for the USA and hit the diving board with her heals on the way down, unceremoniously splashing down in the water like a brick.

There's a certain elegance in focusing on and building towards one moment over a period of 4 years, to then just have everything go tits up in those few seconds or minutes.

They're just playing mindgames with us.  But we're on to them, we're not getting our hopes up again, whoever this 'Vlave' may really be.

I've been watching this olympics more than any of the previous ones because I have a son who is a sports lover. Plus, I try to spot places in Paris that I recognize.

This makes the rounds every few years and it always makes me laugh. Make sure you track down the full version of it too.

Also, after I watched it I learned that he died today or possibly yesterday. That makes me sad.

I'll look at the medal count in the evenings just so I can say, "Fuck yeah! Murica!" But it overall doesn't interest me that much. That said, I did get a kick out of the the Frenchman pole vaulter with a huge penis. He might not win the gold, but he's going to get some endorsement deals when this is all over with.

Between Greenville and Columbia. Our power went out this morning but is back now. The roads are beginning to get a little rough.

I’ll probably pass on the Borderlands movie entirely.

Ravenprose gets a mention in the latest game under podcast. I surmised he is the only listener that will read my review of the Atari 2600 Ranger controller.

A 6% rotten score makes me curious though. Single digit scores can indicate a movie. That's so bad. It's good. And really, that's kind of the only chance a Borderlands movie probably had at being good.

From what I've read so far it's so bad it's just bad.  Quite a shame, big van of Cate Blanchet.  Also makes you wonder how they managed to get such a cast together and have it turn out so bad.  Even people with affinity for the videogame series are saying it's terrible.  And lets be honnest, with the exception of 2, that's a pretty low bar to set.
