I’ve been playing Octopath Traveler on Xbox via Game Pass. I have the Switch version and played through that awhile ago but really enjoying playing it again. Wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel sometime in the future.
Well there's Triangle Strategy, which is sort of a sequel. It has the same visual style and dev team (if I'm not mistaken) and launches in about a month. It also has a similarly stupid name.
Yeah, I’m definitely looking forward to that game. Comes out March 4th.
So what to make of Switch's sales? Are they impressive by home console standards, or only so-so by the standards of prior Nintendo handhelds?
Depends how you look at it. The Switch is on pace to be the second highest selling Nintendo system of all time, only behind the DS. When all is said and done, I don't think there's going to be a real big gap between the two systems either. And since it's about twice the price of a DS you could argue that it's more successful.
On the other hand, if you look at it from the perspective that the Switch is supposed to replace a handheld and a console, and therefore needs to equal the sales of a handhold and a console, then it's a different story. If it hasn't done so already, I know it's on pace to pass the combined sales of the 3DS and the Wii U, though that's not a high bar. Aside from that combo though, I don't know if it's going to surpass any others.
That said, Nintendo is selling more software off of the switch then I think they ever have before, and at the end of the day that's really where they're making their money. So, it's a success. No real question about it.
My only complaint is that there's a little too much exposition and instruction. No one needs this much hand holding. The original N64 version basically said here's your camera, go take pictures. Now you have to endure about 5 minutes of explanation.
How long do you figure the game to be?
I said this before. If the original Super Mario Bros was released today, it would be spoiled with tutorials. You start off world 1-1 and Immediately run into the first Koopa. The game pauses and a spotlight is placed on the Koopa. A voice says "Psst! Hey, Mario! This is a Koopa, the enemy. Press A to jump on top of him. Got that? Press A!"
Pachter? He's still around?
I'm unlocked five levels, and there is at least one more full level ahead of me. I wouldn't be surprised if there are two or three more though judging by the map. Each level also has a night mode, where different Pokemon are available, and those are only unlocked after you've achieved a high enough score on the day levels. And there are branching pathways that can unlock smaller levels. I've only unlocked one of those so far, so I'm not sure if each level is going to have one, but that's sort of the impression that I'm getting.
The levels also require a little more work and experimentation. It definitely feels harder than the original one, though I wouldn't actually call it hard by any means. Anyway, it's been a lot of fun, and hard to put down so far.
I miss instruction manuals.
Looking forward to it. Will probably see some of the new Kirby game and Triangle Strategy. Hope to see something on either a new Xenoblade Chronicles game or a Switch version of XCX.
Me too. Ditching mauals is one of the worst things to happen to gaming.
Not sure how much it generally cost them per booklet. Is it a dollar or more? If so then it probably could be millions of dollars depending on how many copies they distribute.
