This weekend I played only Splatoon2 but lots of it.  Started off with a huge losing streak, with Sunday swinging the other way with me winning game after game after game.  It always feels good to come out as the top player of a game when you're playing with people who are 40+ levels above your own.

Strangest thing also happened to me once when I was dropped in a group of people who were all about my level, but of whom not one seemed to know what they were doing.  It nearly felt like cheating.  I could weave through the other's fire like Neo in the Matrix, splatting the other team time and time again.  I once finished with a 1000 point lead over the second best player as I was nearly single handedly painting everything as no one else seemed to bother with it.  To be fair, it wasn't even much fun anymore.

So I was a bit perplexed at Gone Homes amazing reviews and goty awards. Watched a few YouTube videos and it seems there was a significant backlash against it by gamers. I can only agree with those gamers. Stripped of its subject matter its just not even a good game. Even with its subject matter its still not a great game. Maybe for the people who felt alienation growing up for whatever reason, it might resonate. I felt alienated growing up, not regarding sexuality but I still find the game to be overhyped average-Ness.

that's weekend online gaming in a nutshell I think. If I'm playing Splatoon or hearthstone during the week, people around my skill level tend to be as good or quite a bit better than I am. On the weekends though, when the casual gamers are more likely to pop on, it kind of feels like I'm using a cheat code that I'm not aware of.

As I mentioned on my Wii blog, most of my weekend was spent with Harvest Moon tree of twainquility. I did take a little break though and played Milon's Secret Castle for about 20 minutes. As unfair and kind of broken as it is, it's actually not a bad game. Honestly if they just fixed the damaging issue, it would be a lot better.

Those Ratchet and Clank reviews!!! It's been so long since ACIT, the first true sequel since then. This is why I got a PS5, I'm so excited.

Also E3 starts in two days!!! Sucks Sony isn't there but everyone else seems to be doing stuff.

The game looks superb. It's a shame that because of cross gen requirements, no game in the next 2 years will come close to it in terms of visuals.

As for E3... Meh. It doesn't feel like an event at all anymore.

You know, despite the series having been around for three generations, I have never played a Ratchet and Clank game.

I'm also looking forward to E3 more this year than I have in recent years. Now that the new consoles have been released it's going to be a year where software takes front and center stage, and those are always the best years.

Yeah the new Ratchet & Clank game looks fantastic. I loved the ones on the PS3. Looking forward to play Rift Apart whenever I can get around to getting a PS5. Unfortunately that will probably be awhile.

Really hyped for E3. Should be a lot of great stuff shown off this year.

This gen is off to the weirdest start of any generation so far if you ask me.  It's like there are no games that are exclusive to the new consoles at all.  Everything is available on weaker hardware and it seems that all the new consoles are getting are patches that slightly touch up existing games and deliver 60fps.  Whoop-dee-doo.

edit: of course I could just be incredibly out of touch, as Robio and Arch seem pretty hyped.

It's tough to argue that things haven't gotten off to a disappointing start, especially with Sony pulling back on a few next-gen-only games and making them cross-gen, in Microsoft seemingly doing nothing at all. But all the more reason that things should look exciting in the future.

This really reminds me a lot of the rocky start that the Xbox 360 and PS3 got off to. At that time, it was more developers not fully being aware of how much HD development would take in terms of time and budget, and this time it seems to be more Covid related (though I increasingly suspect that might just be an excuse for once again underestimating development times).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to things. Even E3's have a few bright spots and I'm sure this one will have plenty of them.

I'm sad about Gran Turismo 7 being cross gen. I thought it was being developed to use the full power of the PS5. Oh, well. Now I'm hoping Sony announces GT7 for PC. I might build a new gaming PC instead and skip the PS5.

It's a little tough to guess what Sony is going to do with the PC. The two games they have ported on there have both been pretty successful. However, one is 4 years old, and the other looks like a franchise that they're already pulling the plug on. Since god of war and The Last of Us still haven't gone anywhere, I suspect they are going to be very selective of what goes to PC and keep their really big titles strictly to consoles.

To be honest I’m perfectly fine with all the cross gen games myself. I just look at it like upgrading a PC. Everyone that is still on the previous gen systems can still play these games and those who get the next gen systems just have the ability to play the games at higher settings. It’s very costly for these companies developing/publishing these games and when you first transition to a new console it’s especially tough because you’re basically ditching all those tens of millions of users and essentially starting over again. With cross gen games you’re still tapping into all those consumers who have been built up over the years. It’s even better when companies allow you to buy the previous gen version of a game and then upgrade it for free when you get the new hardware. Really no different then gaming on PC. Eventually as more consumers transition to the new consoles it’ll make more sense to focus game development solely on the newer consoles.

As for Sony bringing their games to PC I fully expect them to start increasing the number of games that they port over and shorten the time between the two versions.

Looks like I'll be doing something I haven't done in a couple years. I'll be taking some time off to watch the E3 coverage. Only one day, Tuesday, so that I can watch the Nintendo treehouse live. Bamco is also doing their show that morning, so I should be able to check out Elden ring if they choose to bring that out.

Truth be told, due to working from home for covid I have reached my maximum paid time off accruement. So I got to do something with this, so might as well take a day off and watch E3 and catch up on anything I might have missed the previous days.

Sweet, you earned it.

Happy E3 everyone! So it seems Elden ring will be shown to day when Geoff-a-palooza begins at 2pm est. it's an hour and a half long show with tons of reveals. Doritos pope does it again!

Is my review here or did I not bother with a proper one. It's a terrible game.

First year is fine after that new games are being held back. It's not just graphics but whatever enhancements having games designed with an SSD in mind can have too. Also after a while the sales of games on next gen consoles dwarf the last gen even though the last gen has like 10x the user base. The people that buy games buy new consoles. RE5 has some crazy like 70/30 split for the PS5 over PS4 in the UK.

I'd be interested in reading it. The videos I've been watching are interesting, they say the media failed to properly communicate on this game and that's why there was a backlash when gamers finally played it.
