HD Rumble explained by TumbleSeed devs
“The biggest difference between HD rumble and what we’re all used to from previous controllers is precision and responsiveness. With old rumble motors, when the developer wants the haptic feedback to kick in. the motor takes a small but measurable amount of time to get to the desired intensity. We’re able to immediately jump to the feedback we want with HD rumble. That alone makes it a more one-to-one experience regarding what you’re seeing, hearing and feeling.” - programmer David Laskey
“With traditional rumble, frequency and intensity are linked. So, in other words, to make the rumble effect more pronounced, the motor has to spin faster. HD rumble on the Switch is much more detailed — sort of like a sound you can feel. We were able to use it to create a recognizable feeling for the game’s core mechanics, and being able scale the intensity of those sensations without sacrificing their identity really helps them feel real.
I rolled marbles, clay pots, rocks, salt blocks, acorns and sticks across different surfaces and listened really closely to the relationship of pitch and volume as they sped up and slowed down. And what was really interesting — particularly with a marble rolling across a smooth wooden surface — was that the change in volume was much more pronounced than the change in pitch. It was a perfect opportunity to take advantage of what makes HD rumble different.
We took special care to make sure that HD rumble always parallels what the sound is doing. When the seed stops, the sound then abruptly fades to nothing, accompanied with a slight bump or hit. I know from doing a lot of synthesis work that sounds that increase in volume logarithmically are more ‘real’ sounding than things that increase linearly. David and I worked out an intensity curve that fades the rumble in logarithmically too. It’s those kinds of dynamics and the blend of engaging two senses: hearing and touch, that give TumbleSeed’s rumble its unique physicality.” - composer and sound design Joel Corelitz
GAF perspective: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1366987
Just got a portable 22'000 mah usb c charger. Now I can get around 16 hours out of Switch at full brightness/wi fi on etc.
Also look forward to using it on my phone which runs down the battery hugely when using the internet. Pretty cheap these things, about half the price of a game.
GG, about the HD rumble, if you've tried the marble game in 12 Switch, you'd get how it can enhance the experience. It's basically just rumble with different intensity, but when applied correctly, it can really evoke a sense of presence.
I wish Nintendo would put an HD rumble demo on the eshop so we could tell wtf it was like without 1-2 switch.
Gaf was talking about how MK8 deluxe uses it really well.

Some people in the thread don't even notice it whilst others say it's awesome. Some said the Splatoon 2 demo had it, I couldn't feel it.
EDIT: Mario Kart is sold out at my local store.
My first thought was this is crazy if true, but I suppose 2018 would be 5 years since the PS4 launched. I know we'll never see a gen last as long as the PS3/360 one did, and with more frequent hardware revisions becoming more commonplace I guess this does kind of make sense.
Can you say its crazy when Scorpio is out this year too?
Scorpio is an upgrade to Xbox One as the PS4 Pro is to the PS4. This analyst's prediction is about the PS5.
Pretty much this. It's a bigger jump than PS4 to the Pro is, but at the end of the day it's an upgrade rather than next gen.
Don't know where you are getting this from, Phil Spencer said it was a new generation, new console not just a PS4Pro style upgrade.
If it's actually next gen then Phil has failed in communicating that to me and the media. Every article I've read keeps referring to it as an Xbox One upgrade. Case in point this article from yesterday - http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/xbox-one-vs-project-scorpio/
No, he was touting it being as powerful as a possible next gen jump but it is very much just a mid gen refresh like the PS4 Pro is just that Microsoft made theirs more powerful.
So the zelda update is cool, but I am disappointed in hard mode, seems very simple and crappy. The enemy guantet will be great. As is that map that shows where you have been, the game needed that from the start.
Darksiders 3!!!! Please be like the first! Maybe I'll get a real zelda game this year after all.
As someone who posts the news daily I remember him being asked on twitter if Scorpio was a PS4Pro like upgrade. His reply was that it was a brand new console, brand new generation. I also remember Thomas Maher/Mahler? An Ori dev saying it was a full blown next generation machine unlike the PS4 pro "half assed" machine - his words.
How did you imagine it would be like?
Total change of the potion health system. Remix of enemy placements, brand new enemies, new boss types in the world, stuff like that.
Didn't they have hard modes in previous games? Weren't they just like using a slider to give them more health and you less health?
They would remove hearts pick ups from the world so only potions healed you and increase difficulty damage by like 4. Those were fine as they were not DLC. This is, I expect more.
