So it really seems it's splatoon 2. How sad is that, it looks so much like splatoon 1 that no one noticed.

So I've had a good nights sleep over this (or I would have had, if our newborn hadn't had different plans with me) and I'm not too sure where I stand on the Switch...  It's basically what I've been saying all along that would be the worst case scenario for Nintendo: to merge their home and handheld business into one.  They're betting all their chips on convincing the PS4 and Xbox crowd that having your games on the go is worth investing in an extra system.  And for that to happen, they'll need to have third parties on board.  Which won't be happening unless porting to the Switch is dirt cheap.  So that most likely is off the cards.

That leaves them with their usual pool of customers: a small core of die hard fans who will get their new console no matter what, and their main market for their portables, kids.  The former will be there to support them, but they sure won't be buying third party games in masses to entice the first group.  As for the latter, I don't see parents buying a Switch (or 2, or 3) for their kids like they do with the 3DS.  It'll be too expensive and not half sturdy enough.  The 3DS didn't sell at €250, and this looks to be €299 at least.  No way this thing is ever going to come down to the sweet spot for portibles of €150-170.  I am a parent, but I don't see me owning more than one of these, while we now own a WiiU, a 3DS and a 2DS.  The pricepoint also brings it in line with Nintendo's biggest rival in the mobile space: the Ipad.  Parents who didn't grow up with videogames themselves just get their kids Ipads.

And then there's the slight chance that Nintendo will strike gold like they did with the Wii, but I don't see this happening.  Wii was an inclusive proposition, something you could play with your grandparents.  The Switch is exclusive and geared more towards gamers than anything Nintendo have created since the days of the GameCube.  It offers nothing that would interest non-gamers.

Nintendo basically switched the core concept of the WiiU around: on-screen play as an extra feature for their handheld.  Unless they can get the PS4/Xbone crowd on board, I don't see this ending well for them.  And even if they do, those gamers will drop them just as fast if their next console doesn't offer some added value to them like console gaming on the go could possible prove to be.

I'd say the same can be said of many sequels.  It looks sharper and more Fresh, what more could you expect?

Also, the ergonomics on the Switch look horrible.  If there's one thing you could rely on Nintendo for, it was to make hardware to fit your hand like a glove.  It's like they saw all those people using tablets and just said 'Eh, screw this, people don't care for ergonomics no more'.

No, but I managed to forge his unhealthy affection for that mobile spinoff into a mild interest in Pokémon Snap.  Muahahahahaa...  Ahem.

Looks like Bethesda and 2K were very well aware of what Nintendo did and did not want confirmed from their reveal video.  Here are both developer's statements:

2K

“We’re happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Nintendo on the trailer. While we are not confirming any specific titles at this time, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Nintendo and support of Nintendo Switch. We look forward to revealing specific details at a later date.” - 2K representative

I have no excitement for it, but I like the concept so far. I don't like how the controller is removable from the screen, though. That is gimmicky. I'll just use it as a portable system. Hopefully the dock is an optional purchase.

Removable controllers so you can play it on your TV wirelessly. Otherwise you'd need a long HDMI cable and the Switch on your lap or a separate bluetooth controller to carry around. And how would you do two player local multiplayer with the same unit if it didn't have detachable controllers?

I'm thinking $299 for the tablet-only, $399 for the tablet + Dock. I hope those are not the acual prices, though.

If the dock is dumb, why would it cost $100 extra?

You could have said the same about any game shown there. That was a lifestyle trailer, didn't showcase the games at all. It took a while before we even realised it was Skyrim. And we'd heard that Splatoon MK8 and Smash may be ported so everyone expected it would be a port. I still think this is a Splatoon remaster with added features.

Sup, Switch is easy to develop for and devs have said the development environment is fantastic.

I'm thinking this is a custom X1 at bargain prices. Read the Arstechica comments in the article at the bottom from someone developing on X1 and what they say about why Switch has a fan etc.

For the same reason official harddrives for Xbox are way overpriced.  Because they can.

Assuming it's a pinch to port games to it, it'll still take a lot for the Switch to be succesfull.  It'll have to be on par with PS4 and Xbone (I forgot how the X1 compares) and not only power wise but also in terms of features (online play, achievements, ... ).  If Nintendo can get all of that right, they have a chance of wooing the PS4/Xbone crowd into using the Switch as a main platform for gaming.  But I find that hard to combine with being cheap enough to appeal to parents buying for their kids.  If they pull it off though, the Switch could sell pretty well.  But it'll only tide them over one gen, as MS and Sony would be idiots not to follow suit.

Switch reveal seems half assed at this point. Usually a console reveal is quickly followed up on with more details. Today we have all the developer and publisher comments and yet not a single confirmed 3rd party game, even the two seen in the trailer aren't confirmed.

I don't know.  I think we know more than we did when the Wii was first unveiled.  'Here it is, but we're not showing you the controller, nor telling you how powerfull it is'

I think this thing will hinge on being sold as a secondary device. And that they are banking on convienience.

When and if people buy one - when it comes to buying a multiplatform game for it or a PS4/XB1 version people will weigh up whether they want better graphics but tethered to one TV at home, or buying a version they can play anywhere. And I guess Nintendo are banking on the idea that Switch versions will see an uptick in sales, compared to the sales of U multiplats.

On pricing remember the rumour that it will be priced way lower than expected? Also that rumour that Nvidia had X1 contracts to fufil so may have even sold them at a loss for Nintendo.

I'm unsure on Switch on the whole, I know I'll like it because it will have most of my favourite franchises like Splatoon and Animal Crossing, but I don't think it will have a huge market or anything.

LOL thanks for reminding me. That's the E3 when Iwata just showed the box and nothing else, right?

On the parents buying a Switch for kids, I guess one could rationalise that they can buy one system rather than one console and then handhelds on top?

It'll all depend on the price I guess.  Sure, you could buy multiple Switch's with only one dock, but if the price differential is €299 to €399, that's still way too expensive.  And being able to buy one (expensive) part cheap, doesn't make for a cheap system.  Remember, Nintendo don't sell hardware at a loss (although they made an exception for the 3DS at one point).

I'm watching the IGN rewind theatre on the Switch and in the Mario footage in the Mexican town I can see a giant moon in the background like he is on a Mexican planet, and importantly it is daytime. Is this actually a new Galaxy game?

Or is this some Day of the Dead thing?

If I'm not mistaken the Wii U was sold at a loss too right?

Yep. I think Reggie said that if someone bought at least 2 games for U then they made their money back on it.

Not sure what you addressing here.

I meant a parent weighing up buying a Switch that can be a handheld and a TV device vs buying a home device like a PS4 then buying a separate handheld too. Given that Switch will have two player multiplayer built in both on TV and as a handheld, if they have bratty kids too.
