Rare has suffered a number of high profile redundancies following Microsoft's decision to change the "development process" at the UK studio.

Sources close to the studio indicated that just under 20 employees are set to depart, including veteran programmer Chris Sutherland, who has worked on Rare games for more than 20-years.

During his distinguished career Sutherland acted as lead programmer on Battletoads, as well as all three Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie games. He's also known as the 'voice' of the latter's bear and bird protagonists.

CVG sources indicate that designer Gavin Price will also leave Rare, after a 15-year career which saw him work on Viva Pinata, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and a number of unannounced, cancelled projects.

Both Sutherland and Price worked on the Kinect Sports games.

In a statement provided to CVG, Microsoft confirmed the staff cuts and called them part of a deeper "methodology" change at the studio.

It said: "At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences.

"As part of Rare's commitment to this goal, we have made a decision to change our development process and methodology at Rare to best support our future projects, this has led to us reviewing the skills and the makeup of our development teams in our business. Rare continues to invest in our people and future projects."

Rare's most recent release was Xbox One's flagship Kinect game, April's Kinect Sports Rivals. It was originally scheduled to be a console launch title in November 2013, but was delayed to give Rare extra time to polish the game and release it without compromising its quality.

In our Kinect Sports Rivals review we praised the title for delivering "motion gaming for everyone - core gamers included".

Microsoft has made a number of significant announcements over the past few weeks, headlined by its decision to release an Xbox One without Kinect for the first time.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said this week that Rare's next project is still being decided.

"[Rare has] just come off the successful launch of Kinect Sports Rivals," he said. "I think I've heard a few times from people asking about Rare - they're in the process of evaluating what they want to do next, and we're working closely with them to see what their new project will be."

Spencer also said the "independent-minded" but Microsoft-owned studio remains free to pursue the projects that interest it.

I want to pick up the whole Clone Wars bunch of season on BR but they're a tad expensive for an impulse buy.
