Digital Foundry Face-Off: Trine 2 on Wii U

Finally, meet the multi-platform game that looks better on Nintendo's new console

DF said:

While Trine 2 may not be a major AAA release worthy of blockbuster coverage, it is a quaint puzzle platformer which is as technically brilliant as it is absorbing to play. More importantly though, special attention has been paid to the Wii U version of the game: in an interview with NintendoLife, sales and marketing manager Mikael Haveri stated that the Wii U version would not only feature additional graphical upgrades over other console releases, but that neither the 360 or the PS3 were capable of running Trine 2 with the same level of visual polish as the PC and Wii U editions. We also understand that the game's architectural underpinnings favour stronger graphics hardware and that the code is relatively light in terms of its CPU requirement - a good match for Wii U hardware, in other words.

First impressions reveal a distinct pecking order in terms of overall graphical quality. Both the 360 and PS3 SKUs look visibly softer than the Wii U and PC releases, but this is a much bigger issue on Sony's system, where the artwork is dramatically smoothed over by heavy blurring of the final image. However, curiously, things appear somewhat off with the Wii U version as well: the image is considerably more washed out than we'd expect it to be, even after the console's limited-range RGB output has been interpolated into the full 0-255 range.

All three console versions render in 720p, so resolution certainly isn't the issue with regards to the overly soft image on the PS3. Instead, the distinct Vaseline-style blur is a result of the anti-aliasing method used in the game. NVIDIA'S FXAA is present on all three consoles, but a cheaper implementation is used on Sony's console, which causes the screen to be covered by a heavy smudging that robs the game's artwork of fine detail and softens the look of foliage dramatically. The FXAA pass is also performed after the HUD has been rendered, so we find that the various on-screen elements are smoothed over too, but particularly heavily on the PS3.

The 360 version still features some image blur, but the effects are nowhere near as strong as on the PS3, and as a result it's easier to enjoy the beautiful artwork scattered throughout the game's lush environments. In this regard the Wii U release fares even better, with what looks like a more refined FXAA algorithm in play. On top of that, the game also features a number of visual enhancements over these versions putting it on a par with the PC release in a number of ways - higher-resolution textures and more detailed foliage are used in many places throughout the game. Meanwhile, on the other two consoles, PS3 owners see some small cuts made in these areas, although the bulk of the art is actually identical to the 360, with the strong FXAA blur having the most damaging impact on overall graphical quality.

Other refinements to the PC game are more subtle - such as the use of higher-quality normal map compression, increased water complexity and splash effects - but these elements work well with the inclusion of higher-resolution textures to deliver more detailed imagery on screen in a way which emphasises the lush look of the environments. Impressively, these elements also form part of the visual package on the Wii U. On top of that the PC game also adopts PhysX enhancements, which mildly improve the quality and scope of destructible objects and surfaces - something that we see on Wii U too.

I played this on a 720p TV and a 1080p TV upscaled to 1080 and it looked much better on 1080.

I didn't quite get this:

DF said:

If there is one disappointing aspect of Trine 2 on the Wii U, it's with the game's washed-out image, where the colours in certain scenes don't look quite right - even after performing limited to full range RGB conversion for our clips and screens, and after testing the game on our calibrated HDTV using the correct black level. Thankfully this can be partially corrected via a dramatic brightness change on the user menu in the game - we lowered the control all the way down, which allows the game to be played in limited-range RGB a little more comfortably on a display in which the black levels cannot be adjusted properly. We then expanded the RGB levels to full range, which gives us a good indication of how the game looks on a HDTV that supports limited RGB input natively, without conversion. The result is that while colours are still skewed somewhat the final image largely avoids looking washed out.

I tried it on 3 different TVS. On 2 it was fine and on the 3rd the colours were so intense I had to turn the colour down on the set, so I don't understand what Tvs they are playing on that are giving out weak colour. If you have gamma/brightness or washed out Wii U visuals on your HDTV because of the limited range HDMI, here is DF's solution:

"Lower theHDMI black level and lower the brightness in the game's menu, it solves the problem!

"On top of that the PC game also adopts PhysX enhancements, which mildly improve the quality and scope of destructible objects and surfaces - something that we see on Wii U too."

Those big leaves are amazing with Physics. I picked up a block with the touch pad, moved it about to smush the leaf. You can flap it about up and down left and right, drop things on it. Looks amazing, the movement is so natural and realistic. Next gen I want to see a whole gameworld with that.

Nice, Joel FB from Frozenbyte, he posts on GAF and now he's commenting on the story in the Eurogamer comments:

Joel FB said:

Joel from Frozenbyte here. Great to see this, very nice. Worth of note is that the game actually has a dynamic resolution scaling feature on PS3 and Xbox 360 to keep a steady 30 frames per second. This shows in some levels (e.g. the 11th level Icewarden Keep has a scene in the beginning where this is somewhat visible, if I remember right). On Wii U the resolution is 720p solid.

Just to be clear, we will indeed be updating the "washed out" look. The observation about gamma level is correct, as there was a bug in the game that applied excessive gamma to the final output. It went unnoticed until release but we have now fixed it. So the game will soon look even better (similar in colour to the other versions). We're estimating a mid-December release for the update, give or take a few days, and it will also include support for Wii U Pro Controller, Voice Chat, some languages, and some minor things.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback too, glad to hear you folks are enjoying the game.

Here's something to think about the Wii U CPU situation. I read this ages ago but someone posted it again recently.

One of the guys who ports emulators to consoles said that Wii 1's Broadway clocked @729MHz is, in essence, only 20% slower than a single core of Xenon

LibretroRetroArc said:
I believe if you program only against one main CPU (like we do for pretty much most emus), you would find that the PS3/Xenon CPUs in practice are only about 20% faster than the Wii CPU.

I've ported the same code over to enough platforms by now to state this with confidence - the PS3 and 360 at 3.2GHz are only (at best - I would stress) 20% faster than the 729Mhz out-of-order Wii CPU without multithreading (and multithreading isn't a be-all end-all solution and isn't a 'one size fits all' magic wand either). That's pretty pathetic considering the vast differences in clock speed, the increase in L2/L1 cache and other things considered - even for in-order CPUs, they shouldn't be this abysmally slow and should be totally leaving the Wii in the dust by at least 50/70% difference - but they don't.
BTW - if you search around on some of the game development forums you can hear game developers talking amongst themselves about how crap the 360/PS3 CPUs were to begin with. They were crap from the very first minute the systems were launched - with MS hardware executives (according to some 360 'making of' book) allegedly freaking out when IBM told them they would be getting in-order CPUs for their new console - which caused them to place an order to have three 'cores' instead of one because one core would be totally pathetic (pretty much like the PS3 then where you only have one main processor and 6/7 highly specialized 'vector' SIMD CPUs that are very fast but also very low on individual RAM and essentially have to be able to do some heavy code weightlighting for you to gain anything). Without utilizing multithreading, you're essentially looking at the equivalent of Pentium 4-spec consoles that have to be helped along by lots of vector CPUs (SPUs) and/or reasonably mid-specced, highly programmable GPUs (which the Wii admittedly lacks)

Someone else is the same thread follows up:

GAF said:

If 1 Xenon core only out performed Broadway by 20%, than could this be why Wii U's CPU cores were originally clocked at 1GHz? (a clock speed increase of 37%) wouldn't this than put the Wii U's 3 cores at 1.24GHz with as good or better performance clock for clock as Broadway, quite a bit beyond Xenon (Broadway would match or beat a Xenon core at only 875MHz?) so more like a 1.5x (I know we love those multiples) or 50% faster than Xenon according to the emulator developer from the quoted post above?

Obviously for certain tasks that are SIMD heavy would still likely fall short on Wii U, but for general computing of game logic and what not, wouldn't Wii U's CPU cores reasonably faster? or was the developer missing some other key component of Xenon's power that was unlocked later on?

So there you are. Pretty weird how a 3.2ghz clock speed CPU can only be 20% better than a 729mhz out of order CPU. Clock speeds. Eh.

Oh and some more info for you from GAF, the Wii U Zelda and bird garden demos were done when the U dev kits had a 1ghz triple core CPU and a 400 mhz GPU. Since then the CPU was boosted to 1.24 ghz and the GPU to 550 mhz.

Steam sale for big picture mode is pretty good. Very few games they have not put on sale before, but Wizorb is supposed to be good.

The EU one says it will cover upcoming releases into next year so maybe a new game or two.

Hey I'm not sure if anyone caught the new PSN releases, but there's a cool PS2 Classic getting released - Chulips. It's a really weird game, and tough as hell to describe. It's sort of an adventure game where the focus is on kissing..... a lot of the design and core gameplay elements were actually taken by the development team and used in Little King Story though, so if that game did it for you, you may want to give this one a shot.  Poor game never really got a fair shake due to being released at the end of the PS2's cycle due to multiple publisher delays, and didn't have the polish that games of that time really were expected to have. Anyway it's a quirky Japanese game (that's pretty much a genre right?), and you may want to give it a try. For $10 it's worth it.

Oh I turned on my PS3 for the first time since the Wiii U was released so I could get that Ni Kuni whatever demo, and I had a nice surprise waiting for me. Sega sent me a message with a free code for a NiGHTS into dreams theme since I bought the game. I'm not really one for themes, but this is gorgeous. I'll be keeping it around for some time.

That's a nice little incentive though. Probably doesn't cost the publisher much and I think that'd be a great way to get a few extra sales.

Really? Personally I'd rather have a one-time download with shorter loading times from then on instead of sticking with the longer loading times forever.
