Gears of War 3 is set to sacrifice framerate for 'better visuals', Cliff Bleszinski supposedly told the Russian magazine doing the rounds this morning.

According to rough translations by the chaps on the official Epic Games forums, the Gears of War designer told the mag he's opted for prettier graphics and dynamic environments for the third game rather than a 60fps framerate.

Multi-layered shadows, wind and particle effects were the reported reason given for the lower frame rate. Cliff supposedly said: "Instead of chasing after 60 fps we decided to make it look better, we think that's a good choice. Also the levels change in real time."

Apparently Mr. Gears of War also revealed that the third game will be edging for a slightly lower difficulty this time around, in attempt to counter the fact that 60% of Gears 2 players didn't finish the game.

Controversial stuff. We'll drop Epic a line to get this confirmed.

I was among that group. I made it 20 minutes in.

 i would guess that that percentage is about the same for any game.  but i don't know

By the way, didn't a established comic book writer pen the game? Well, that explains it then. The writing sample you posted sounds like something out of a X-Men or Avengers book!

This is Gears of War and Epic we're talking about here so I seriously doubt that'll the framerate's going to really be bothersome and all that. I'm sure it'll be just fine. While there were some frustrating parts in the Gears games, on Insanity difficulty mind you, I didn't find them to be too difficult in general. I finished both games on Insanity solo. However if they want to lower the difficulty in the 3rd game I certainly don't have a problem with that either.

I don't know. Gears of War is already 30fps so any lower might be noticeable. But this is Epic so I'm sure they know what they're doing.

I hope I don't read stupid game editors giving it a lower score because, "Oh teh framerates!"

A little disappointed since it took so damn long! Also, this was supposed to be one of MS's biggest exclusive titles. Oh well.

I guess my prediction for a Resident Evil 4 of this generation was slightly over-exaggerated!

And is it really 14 hours long? Than how come GT says each of the 6 episodes is only an hour? Weird.

Maybe if there were unlockable hamster characters you can shoot with?

But about what Bugs said. I guess that's just the way it is. But Alan Wake is coming out in less than two weeks and S&P2 is coming out around June, so hopefully there will be more buzz for S&P2 when that time comes.

That was expected on my part.  It had a really disjointed development experience.
