You first.
I like gamecentral, I read the teletext service just about everyday for like well over a decade. They don't spooge over games, most games everyone else is giving 9/10s to they temper and give 8/10s but its not like EDGE mag where they either give 8s or 5s. And they dont just trash games for the sake of it or to be edgey or cool.
The only recent game where they've gone over the top with is SFIV which they 10/10-ed. I think the writer was a particular fan. Otherwise they often seem to be like the tempered voice a reason, even when they give lower scores to games I enjoy far more than them.
I never even heard of that website until today, and now I know why.
That's because they're a teletext TV service that has been running for longer than most websites. Digitiser which became Gamecentral started 16 years ago.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitiser
It's UK based which is why foreigners haven't heard about it. The website is just the online version of the TV text service, part of telext as a whole.
Anyhow they are shutting down at the end of this year because of cutbacks at teletext.
"Microsoft announced a special $50 mail-in rebate offer for those who purchase an Xbox 360 Elite from now until October 5." --Ign
Perhaps we have solved the riddle. Bungled marketing has led to mixed messages and confused reviews?
Bethesda's production director Ashley Cheng has said that Microsoft and Bungie have sent out mixed messages about Halo ODST, prompting reviewers to question the length and value of the game.
If the marketing of the game – which was originally called Halo: Recon and pitched as an expansion to Halo 3, before being upgraded to a full-price release – was clearer, the game wouldn't have faced such criticism, said Cheng.
"Microsoft and/or Bungie totally bungled the marketing on this," he wrote on his blog. "First, saying it was a standalone expansion pack, then coming out and saying wait, no, we're charging full price because - surprise! - we put 'more' stuff in it and it's called Halo ODST now, versus it's original title, Halo Recon.
"Like Microsoft was ever going to sell this for less than full price. It is a new Halo title, it'll sell like hotcakes no matter what," he added.
Indecision on Microsoft's part has tainted reviews in the press, said Cheng, adding that a majority of first-person shooters offer less than 10 hours play – a criticism levelled at the game by reviewers.
"Because of the waffling, reviewers are now mentioning that Halo ODST may not be worth the price point, that it should've been cheaper, etc... Give me a break.
"First off, most games - especially first person shooters - are anywhere from 5-10 hours. Tops. What makes Halo different from others? You can't just ping Halo ODST for it. I bet if Microsoft hadn't screwed up the marketing messaging, there would less talk about pricing," he concluded.
Halo ODST has received favourable reviews since the embargo lifted on Sunday, with the game notching up a Metacritic rating of 84 per cent. The title went on sale today in the UK.
It looks a lot like Hakuna Matata (Afrika in US). Nice game incidentally (and cheap from playaisa.com)
Here is what he said (I'm typing this from the magazine):
"I think this is the last NMH that is going to be developed on Wii. To expand NMH to new possibilities, we need a new platform. Wii is a great platform, but we've done everything we can with it now." (Page 81, Issue 204)
IGN Spyborgs Review 7.5
"Spyborgs seems like a game with a slight identity crisis. On the one hand, it's an extremely polished, but straightforward beat-'em-up with an unimposing style ripped right out of a Saturday morning cartoon. That seems to suggest that it's right for kids. But it also happens to be incredibly hard, particularly if you play it on the recommended core and adrenaline difficulty settings, which in contrast indicates that maybe Capcom wanted to satisfy an older audience. The end result is a game that probably won't thoroughly captivate either demographic because older players will want something grittier and younger players something a little easier. If, however, you happen to fall in the middle and don't mind the fact that Spyborgs doesn't really innovate the beat- 'em-up genre, you will discover a fun and highly polished brawler for Wii. I will be interested to see what Bionic Games does next." --Matt C.
Not bad reviews for Spyborgs and TMNT: Smash-Up but I'm a little disappointed they didn't turn out better especially TMNT. Now get to work on Dead or Alive 5 Team Ninja. Although without Itagaki I'm a little worried. Still I'll probably give Spyborgs and TMNT a rental sometime down the line.
TMNT is a huge disappointment in my eyes. They had the Smash Bros. team make a game with the Smash Bros formula so they should have hit it out of the park. Plus, they didn't really go with too many of the characters I was familiar with. Outside of the central characters they really dropped the ball in my eyes. Characters like Usagi Yojimbo, Ace Duck, Beebop and Rocksteady were dropped so they could put in. . . Rabbids. I love the Rabbids, but get them the fuck out of this game.
