The review reads rather strangely, like they found the game difficult and couldn't get over it. The other hands on previews I've read, of not only this game but  Virtua tennis with motionplus have all been overwhelmingly positive so far.

I might have expected complaints about the design, but on the impressions of Motionplus so far, I didn't expect complaints about the controls yet.

Looking at the EA site, it seems they are trying to figure out the proper way to hold the controller. That might explain some on the variety in opinions on the controls.

http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/241401.page

I did actually read that you have to hold the controller literally like the handle of a racket. Reading that post, that's a good point, but silly that EA didn't explain it in the manual or something.

Oh Yoda, if only you were my neighbour and could do all this crap for me.

Prince of Persia Producer:

IG: What you're talking about – satisfying the casual crowd, removing frustration, etc. - and the fact that it's cel-shaded, makes Prince of Persia seem perfect for the Wii, right? Why keep it just PS3/360?

BM: The reality is that from a technical standpoint, the Wii cannot do what we wanted the game to do. The AI of Elika was highly advanced and required a lot of processing power; the world size and dynamic loading, the draw distance, the number of polygons in the characters... If we had done a Wii version, it would have been toned down, probably linear, it wouldn't have been an open-world game, and so it would have been a very different experience. We didn't want to water it down that way. That said, I do agree very much that some of the people that probably would have most appreciated the design choices we made are Wii gamers. It would be really nice to be able to tap into that and give them that experience.

IG: So I guess you file that away for your next project...

BM: Yeah, a lesson to be learned moving forward. But keep in mind what the industry looked like when we started development on Prince of Persia. When we started, the Wii was [pegged] to be "everybody's second console," so if you look back at the documents and powerpoints of the business plan for the project, there were business cases for not doing the Wii version and for why the design philosophy of the Wii nation is suitable for the 360 and PS3, because in our minds everyone was going to have both. If they had a Wii in the same household, they were going to have a PS3 or 360 as well. And that obviously didn't happen with every Wii.

IGN Grand Slam tennis review

Grand Slam Tennis is an impressive package on Wii, and one of the best tennis games I’ve ever played. This opening year of Wii MotionPlus support – and the fact that it’s the first time out the gate for this series – leaves a few odd experiences to be had, and it’s not quite a true 1:1 experience for real-racquet movement, but minus a bit of a learning curve and some mechanical serving the experience is surprisingly fun and really, really addictive. It may seem daunting at first to deal with character movement, swing control, and button modifiers for lobs and drops, but once you get in the zone you’ll feel a level of connectivity that other games on the system just don’t have, and it’s paled only in comparison with Tiger Woods which is simply amazing this year. On top of some impressive, extremely accurate – once you get the feel for them – motion controls the game is also packed with content, including a full Grand Slam career mode, create-a-character, impressive online play that puts country vs. country play at the forefront of it all, and a party mode I actually want to play.

8.5

Gamesradar review:

The perfectly tuned controls go hand in hand with a physical solidity that gives the whole game an impressive sensation of weight. The way the ball bounces, the way the players slide when changing direction, the speed and angles you can get on your shots.

It reminds us of the brilliant Super Tennis on SNES, where we could zing cross-court balls like missiles over the net, swerving shots that landed just inside the tramlines. We can do the same sort of thing in Grand Slam Tennis, and that’s definitely a first on Wii as far as we’re concerned.

9/10

Wow, just read 1Up's Itagaki interview (as usual, conducted by James Mielke, who somehow manages to take Itagaki's balls outside his mouth to ask him a few questions). The highlight of the interview was:

1UP: So does this mean you won't have women in your next game, or that you just won't have sexy women in your next game?

TI: Don't be stupid.

I guess it was my fault for expecting anything else from this interview, besides Itagaki badmouthing some game whilst enduring Mielke's furious fellation.

Man its too bad Darkside Chronicles isn't a real RE game, because the graphics engine looks awesome for Wii and it actually looks like a RE game (unlike RE5).

Really, why can't they do a true RE game? Don't they realise people would much prefer that over another light gun game? Oh, Umbrella Chronicles is a test.....and if Wii owners pass the test, we'll give them......MORE LIGHT GUN GAMES.

Found at GAF. It seems that Natal could have trouble recognizing black people. The linked blog talks about impressions with the device, and explains how N'Gai struggled with his test drive in Paradise:

When game consultant and former Newsweek writer N'Gai Croal gave Paradise a test drive, however, the game had trouble reading his steering actions. The footwork (gas and brakes) worked fine, but Croal couldn't steer his car at all. It wasn't clear whether this was a problem of calibration differences between Tsunoda and Croal's very different body types, or if Croal's crazy dreadlocks threw Natal off. But it was working just fine when Tsunoda was at the "wheel."

Here's the scientific background on NIRS apparent/alleged failure to perform correctly on black skinned individuals. It seems that Natal uses NIRS.

I guess they better not design the next 50 Cent around Natal...

You should check out the thread, Cavia have created all these shader effects from lessons they've learnt from other consoles. IGN says the frame rate is screwed though. The videos seem okay, its just the camera which is messed up.

Way back when Aliens vs Predator used to be the holy grail for me. They were two of my favourite childhood movies from the 80s. I read the comics, especially enjoyed the Mark Veiheiden Predator comics involving Schaefer. And I read the AVP comics and Aliens comics too.

Then those crappy AVP movies launched and were crap personified. And I still dont understand why anyone would play as an alien in these games.

Italian newspaper:

An all new Wii in 2010
The plans of the giant Nintendo
Nintendo ready for the new version of the King of consoles.
Coming in stores starting in 2010 to keep ahead of Microsoft and Sony.
of JAIME D'ALESSANDRO

LOS ANGELES - The meeting was held in a hotel in Downtown during the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the exhibition dedicated to the world of electronic games which ended a few days ago in Los Angeles. On one side the managers of Nintendo, on the other the representatives of the other editors of the caliber of Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Activision. The subject? Two new consoles that the multinational of Super Mario will launch in stores respectively in October 2010 and end 2011.

The first, according to our source, will be a new version of the Wii, the most sold at this time of the home consoles, having exceeded 50 million units. But it is also the least powerful. That's why game developers are asking to have added at least one hard disk and a high definition HDMI port. The new Wii so should have both. The second will be a portable console, more powerful of about three times compared to Ds and having a better screen. The technical specifications of both were revealed three weeks ago to the largest Japanese publishers of video games in Tokyo starting from Konami, Capcom, Namco Bandai and Square Enix.

"No, we do not have any plan about this" denies Shigeru Miyamoto, the creative mind of Nintendo and principal architect of the success of Wii and DS along with Satoru Iwata, the president of the company in Kyoto. 'It is obvious that we are constantly looking for innovations, "says Miyamoto.
"But it is never a question of hardware. It is crucial for us to bring the best for the most affordable price."
Except that now the others, Microsoft and Sony, are moving in the direction of Nintendo trying alternatives to the traditional joypad and lowering the price of their console. This forces Miyamoto & Co. to react in one way or another.
Beyond the official denials.
