FFrame IV review

http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/review-fatal-frame-4

Want. I'm eagerly expecting this one.

So far I have seen 3 western previews of the game and IGN seems to be the ones who are down on the lack of pointer controls for the torch. The other previews like this review or the NOM preview have actually praised the torch controls for adding tension. I can sort of understand it, Wii IR controls are really fast so in a game like this if you can whip your wrist around in a microsecond to photo a ghost, things would lose tension and be too easy I suppose.

The review says " If any proof is needed that awkward is often better, we look to the later introduction of a ghost-slaying torch that swiftly dispatches spooks on the spot, and any hint of suspense along with them."

This sounds cool too:

"Suda’s impish handiwork is felt too in a tremendous pressure-sensitive action command. Holding the A button sees your moves enacted; release it and your hand retracts. Normally automatically performed, we’ve forgotten the vulnerability of venturing a hand into places unknown. Pulling back the curtain, feeling under the bed, tapping a stranger on the shoulder; zombies, ghosts and Silent Hill’s meatsacks are revealed as the cheap scare tactics they really are."

"Of course, that these actions often reward you with a new trinket to empower your ghost-melting Kodak reminds you of Fatal Frame’s ‘Say cheese!’ endgame. However, for the sake of unprecedented horror interaction, it’s worth smiling for the camera."

This is interesting too.

Famitsu Tenchu IV review breakdowns

8
- Each stage is separated into “areas†that you have to clear.
- Degree of freedom is thin
- Discovering clearing routes is fun
- Controls in Duel Mode are difficult to get a hang of

7
- emphasis on secrecy is strong, especially given the fact that you fail instantly if you’re being discovered
- The “sandbox†feeling inevitably fades away because of the way the stages are defined.
- Duel Mode controls are difficult

8
- The fact that being discovered = instant failure makes the game thrilling
- Difficulty level has been raised
- It’s easy to have fun playing given the way the stages are defined.

6
- You can easily pull off killing blows
- Development is monotonous, “old schoolâ€.
- movement is sluggish
- the fact that the 3rd person point of view doesn’t give you much freedom is also annoying.

Link

So what I'm getting is that the stages are linear but have a couple of different routes through each one. I don't see how movement is sluggish from the videos I have seen. You can full pelt run and flip between hidden areas really quickly. Duel mode must be the first person sword fighting. I don't know what they mean by difficult as you just move the remote to how it is on screen, so they must mean that the recognition is off. Hope they improve these things for the west.

1UP REPORTING ON THE FAMITISU REVIEWS

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170674

"Since you're advancing through a series of divided areas, you don't feel as much freedom as before," one noted. "Still, figuring out the correct route and how to one-hit enemies is fun. None of the maps are that big, so restarting isn't a big deal." All the reviewers also noted Tenchu 4's high challenge level, partly because of difficult Wiimote-heavy swordfighting and partly because of a new focus on stealth over action. "Maybe you can escape for a bit or use your ninja tools to save yourself, but basically, if you're found, you're out," as one put it.

I'm done with Too Human after 12 hours. I'd say its about an 6.8 or so.

The reason its a 6.8 is because of the great atmosphere and setting. If this game was based on its gameplay alone, I'd say it was a 5.8, 10 points lower.

I don't know what the fuck Dyack is on, but these controls are seriously gimped. I mean, the game is basically a dungeon crawler a la Baldur's Gate and PSO. Only, instead of mashing buttons, you mash the analog stick and have no camera control save for the lame 'push LB to center view'. Really, why set the controls up like this?

The story is good, but never really takes off...and by the end it started going in a direction that I didn't expect....not really in a good way. Mass Effect's story is more of what I figured TH's would be like I think. There's some cool characters, but again, you don't really get to know them all that well. The game feels like it was intentionally held back and stretched out to make it into a trilogy....another reason why I hate the trilogy trend.

You have 4 "dungeons", which are gigantic. Problem is, they're very repetetive and you just keep going through the same kind of areas over and over....and doing the same thing's over and over (fighting.....wondering why your squad is useless and enemies seek you out from a mile away even if you have people way ahead of you....and dying).

Even finding loot is nowhere near as addictive as it is in most games of this kind, though you do get some sweet looking gear (most of it around the end of the game...yay).

Honestly, it feels like a game that should have been a PSO clone; 4-player online co-op and loot mongering. But they try to pawn it off as a single-player game with optional online and its not. Of course, the online got hacked from 4 player to 2....why I have no idea. But I really feel like it would have been better as a true PSO-like online game. Either that, or as the Metal Gear meets Final Fantasy hybrid it was originally intended to be (which is kind of how Mass Effect is, in a way).

Overall pretty disappointed. Silicon Knights have always impressed me, and the fact that they spend so much more time on this game than their others had me expecting big things. I always thought this would be one of the top 10 Gamecube games, then one of the top 10 360 games. As it is, its just barely recommendable. I wouldn't doubt that there was serious opposition within SK as to what direction this game should go. It really feels that way.

LOL at the fucked up golf game that walked away with 12 points.

1up said:

The game, a simple golf title based off a 1980s anime, is apparently so bereft of features that it resembles a bad NES-era licensed game more than anything -- as one reviewer tastefully put it, "it's a precious experience, in a way, to run into a game like this in this age.

I guess the trilogy is screwed now. They should get going on Eternal Darkness 2, which would probably fail commercially too.

I did some updates:

Disaster impressions out in 9 days in Europe

http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/920/920096p1.html

Disaster: Day of Crisis Picture

Also of note is presentation all round, with character models, animation, voice work and music all coming together to form a convincing riff on the disaster movie genre. Sure, it's as cheesy as hell – with a plot that apparently revels in knowing clichés and dialogue reminiscent of some of Capcom's most famous language stompers – but it's all fittingly hilarious. Speaking of Capcom, there's something of an old-school action vibe right through the centre of Day of Crisis, with its retro high-concept, high-camp charms and contrived game mechanics recalling fond memories of Resident Evil,

So far, it's a largely solid game experience, with both driving and combat feeling natural through well-implemented Remote and nunchuck control. Our only real concern with Disaster's otherwise competent on-rails shooting is the pointer's relative looseness. It's certainly not a deal breaker but the slight cursor lag (which annoyed us in Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles and annoys us equally here) just doesn't offer the kind of satisfying responsiveness we'd appreciate in this type of game.

All in all though, combat is taught and tactile and surprisingly well-integrated into the more exploration-based segments of the game. It's a similar story for the far less frequent driving elements too, which use the remote's motion sensor in a similar style to Mario Kart or ExciteTruck. It's a control scheme that's proved its worth before and works well in Disaster.

Based on what we've seen so far, Disaster Day of Crisis is as 'B' as its cinematic inspiration. It's dumb, it's flawed and hardly likely to go down in history as a classic. However, like any disaster movie of worth, it's a daft, wild and ultimately enjoyable ride – and, given the game's relative uniqueness on Wii, we're looking forward to playing more.

Sounds fun in a retro arcade like way.

Niiiice grass and crisp character model. Some crappy rocks but if it moves as fast as sonic games normally do you wont notice I guess.

Anyone play those Mega Man Legends games? I looked up some videos on Youtube last night, and the game looks pretty bad to me. Why would Inafune want to make another one? More importantly, why would Mega Man fans want another one? Am I missing something?

The World Ends With You Thing:

"
The World Ends With You was a departure for Square Enix -- a new IP, done in 2D, and set in real-world locations. The game took three creative leads who had never directed a game before, and threw them to the wolves. They learned, as do we all, that it's not as easy as it seems."

WTF!? Seriously these people NEED to split and form their own studio. THIS is the type of "young creative  potential minds" the Japanese gaming scene needs....their first game EVER!? Shit imagine what they'll be creating in a few years.

"The original concept of dual-screen battles came from creative producer Tetsuya Nomura, but it was easier said than done. Fighting battles on the lower screen using the touch panel was our original concept, and turned out as well as we expected. But our biggest headache stemmed from the battles in the upper screen.

"We threw a number of ideas at the wall to see what stuck, like command-based battles or even music games. At first, we were determined that the player would have to fight on both screens at once, but after trying out a few systems we realized the error of our ways.

"Why did we have to make the user do anything in the upper screen at all? Once we left our creative egos at the door and looked at things through the player's eyes, we realized what was wrong. We had to make the user want to fight on both screens, but still provide the automatic combat if they elected to avoid it."

If only all developers shared this slice of common sense. So many unique and creative ideas are wasted by developers making the mechanics being "different" then actually fun.

Fuck I can't wait until that trio does another game. I'm going to look up who they are.

EDIT: Found them. Tatsuya Kando (director), Tomohiro Hasegawa (co-director), Takeshi Arakawa (planning director). All but one looks like they are in their early to mid 30's.

Tenchu IV - WTF!? The non-linearity was by far and wide the best part of the series. My interest in this game just got down a shit load. Not sure if I'll buy it anymore.

One of the site's forefathers.

Play fighting games!

Anyone play those Mega Man Legends games? I looked up some videos on Youtube last night, and the game looks pretty bad to me. Why would Inafune want to make another one? More importantly, why would Mega Man fans want another one? Am I missing something?

For its time, it was revolutionary. I've never played them myself, but I'm  itching to find a copy.

You want a more solid link Steel? Here, I'll post what the Ubi rep said on the forum:

You have 5 activations on 3 separate PCs.

- Uninstalling the game “refunds” an activation. This process is called “revoke”, so as long as you complete proper uninstall you will be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on 3 systems.

- You can upgrade your computer as many time as you want (using our revoke system)

- Ubisoft is committed to the support of our games, and additional activations can be provided.

- Ubisoft is committed to the long term support of our games: you’ll always be able to play Far Cry 2.

Well Too Human is much like Diablo 2 and other games like it in that the game was designed for multiple playthroughs and loot runs. Of course you'll see better and better loot as you near the end but even then your character will only be at around level 25 and the max right now is 50. If you carry that character over to another playthrough the good item drops will follow right along with you and continue to get better as you progress.

Also like most any other game you'll die fairly often until you get the hang of it but I've been able to go through each of the four stages without a single death and that was done in single player mode.

Thanks, man. I'm not heavily on the PC side for now, but lately, all these DRM news have freaked me out a bit. Bolded is good, though.

Sounds like a rental.

Edit: I meant Disaster, the Sonic one sounds like a turd.

You sound like a turd!!

Anyway, I have beaten Mega Man 9 twice now, I love it! On my second try I beat it in 59 minutes, just enough to get all the time achievements.  I can't believe I thought this game was hard, it was for a bit but then you become like Neo and see the game clearly, I can finish some levels in under two minutes without dying. I doubt i will ever reach crazy zen level where you don't get hurt once but I will try to get the majority of achievements.
