How does Stranger's Wrath not look better? There's more enemies on screen, more effects, I'll concede less bump mapping, but hell the water looks 50 times better. Plus, when you look at stranger's wrath, you've got something to look at instead of a bunch of generic aliens and enemies. And I'm mainly referring to the latest tech demonstration. The original tech demonstration (of the engine) i thought looked pretty good, this one is a huge meh.
IMO.
Anyway, I seem to remember you saying you didn't like Stranger's Wrath much?
I mean seriously everything is just so awful.
To kill enemies all you do is just tap the attack button to shoot your instant beam ray, I mean slash your sword that you never ever see even when he is walking with his back turned at you, at your enemies....and that's it. That's the entire game just hitting that one button. And the jumping is so awkward it's like when you want to jump forward it springs you way farther then you wanted to go. The enemy placement is just ridiculous. Sometimes you have no choice but to get hit (this is extremely apparent at the 2nd level) but then again their is only ONE way of attacking (the sliding kick doesn't work on many enemies). And don't even get me started with the games pacing. Also to further my rant the sword attack isn't even fufilling, I mean when I kill someone in Shinobi or jump on an enemys head in Donkey Kong Country I get that "Yeah!" feeling but not here, it's just feels like me hitting a button all the time.
I'm sorry but if there is one thing I can tell you guys by going back and play all these old games it's that the Genesis library is unbelievably over-rated. It's not just this game, it's also Toe Jam & Earl (it's good for a gimmick at best), Lunar: Blue Moon (fucking atrocious), Sonic the Hedgehog 1 (he isn't fast), Sonic 2 (fun game but just REALLY isn't as polished as Nintendo's top tier platformers), and etc.
I mean don't get me wrong the console has some really great games like M.U.S.H.A. Aleste, Snatcher, and Gunstar Heroes (get all these game through ROM NOW!) but the stuff that is held up to represent the console either sucks or is light years away from even touching SNES's top tier line-up.
Also what did this version do better then the arcade due to you saying "almost"?

The fact you can change the difficulty and adjust lives. Assuming you were playing it at the arcade, you were at the operators mercy.
I played Sonic 2 not too long ago. It's still a GREAT game. It's easily the best thing that Sonic Team were ever involved with.
Yeah, I mean I only played the arcade version too, but it's great.
It increased my interest in seeing it in high quality. No comment on the screens guys?
No, I didn't say that. I like it, it's a good game I would definetly reccomend to others, I just got bored halfway through and never picked it up again. It's a great looking game but to me doesn't look as good as the conduit at all. It's got a very toony style, the environments are big but do chug at times. The Conduit looks sharper and smoother, seems to be (in some areas) higher poly and has far better effects. To me the Conduit looks like Xbox Half Life 2, except at a smooth frame rate and with more detailed, crisper textures.
It still has lots of room for improvement though, it has some low res environment textures. It almost looks like all the effort has gone into the enemies and guns and the environments rely on effects. This is probably done to balance the Wii's horsepower and get the game at a decent frame rate. I am a frame rate whore mostly, I prefer a game like the conduit that is sharp and smooth over something like Chronicles of Riddick which yes, had normal mapping, but was also jaggy and had a sluggish frame rate. I also don't mind the art style of the conduit. It's no more generic than Half life 2. Yes of course it's totally derivative of that and it's nothing inspired but it's no worse than a lot of games out there and there aren't many games on Wii that look similar apart from MP3, which looks fantastic regardless of the system it's on.
Sorry to play the experience card, but I guess it really was different if you grew up playing these games in their hey day. Tom Jam and Earl was quite fun back in the day but you got hopelessly lost. In retrospect, it is crap and I would never buy it on VC again - great music though. The Sonic games are fun but they were never as fun as the nintendo platformers, but then you had the system wars back then even and fanboys on the SEGA side wanted to hype their big mascot character. But then, not many platformers are as good as the mario games full stop.
Personally, I downloaded Gunstar Heroes on VC and I don't like it at all. In fact I've found the few Treasure games I have played overated. Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier and Mischief Makers, the gba versions of that DC beat-em up (name escapes me at the moment) and the sequel to Gunstar Heroes. Only Sin and Punishment and Astro Boy I enjoyed. In fact Astro Boy is fantastic, I have to buy that again.

You guys liking the updates? Anyone awake on a rainy sunday?
Yeah, that's true the characters models are definitely better. Which is pretty much why I don't like The Conduit's graphics, the models look a lot better than the enviroments a lot of the time, so it's jarring. I personally like when all the visuals come together, which is why I think SSX looked so great.
I'm loving those Tomb Raider screens, and Underground Cat racing.
I am not alone!
The game is not out till spring 09 so I hope they improve the environments a bit more. Do you remember the first conduit screens? They were pretty flat until they found a way to pop out the normal maps, I read that in an interview. They recentely discovered some extra RAM they haven't used according to IGN, so I hope they get to improving the look of some basic things like wall and ground textures. On the one man army vid on IGn they seem to have quite a few onscreen enemies there.
I saw them, they look awesome. But did you see my "comics"?
Count me as another who understood the soul-stealing one... though it did take me a bit. It's not quite an exemplary soul-stealing pic for the message conveyed.
Thought the piracy one was hilarious. Sorry, too busy updating and doing pics to respond before.
I myself think the soul snatching one is the cleverest, but I found the Little King's Story by far the most funniest. If you guys would have read the Naruto manga, you would laugh your arse off. The piracy one was more a message thing, I did not really intent it to be funny, but than I found the gamespot banned logo. I think this pussed it in the funny category.
I will also do stuff with the windwaker manga. Stay tuned next week I will try to make another one.
Anyone here own Black?
I just watched the gametrailers review. I only played the first level demo on Xbox and I really didn't enjoy it much. It was kind of repetitive and fairly bland and I never really felt that the controls were accurate enough. There were tons of explosions and stuff though.
The video review shows some much larger areas, but the washed out colours really put me off, it actually looks a lot like killzone. How was the game?
I rented Black last year. Personally, the game became very boring about halfway through, and I didn't finish it. It's a very repetitive game.
Yeah I found Sonic 2 to be really good too. But it just wasn't as polished as say Donkey Kong Country. I mean not to sound fanboy here but with an exception of those 3 games listed not one other Mega-Drive game could compete with the SNES games.
Well the arcade version of Strider BETTER be a huge improvement over this one. And I see what you mean by playing the games in the past makes them more fun. Even though I was really young I played "Bugs Bunny's Rabbit Rampage" so much I remember a lot of bits and pieces. And quite honestly that really does contribute to the games enjoyablity. But with an exception of that I don't really remember too much aside from Yoshi's Island and burbles of Sonic 3D and Super Mario World. Anyway I just find that nearly all of the SNES games that were said to be great in the past are still just as good now as they ever were while the Mega-Drive games have not only failed to age well but are inferior to games produced at that time. I mean Lunar, Shining Force, Phantasy Star vs. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, and Star Ocean? Sonic and Dynamite Heady vs Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi's Island? And I don't even think there was anything to compare Super Metroid against. I mean don't get me wrong a lot of these games "have their moments" and are great games in their own right, but they just can't hold a candle against what the SNES produced aside from a select few. To see what I mean just compare the top-tier exclusive games on the Xbox vs. the top-tier games on the Playstation 2. I mean yeah Panzer Dragoon Saga, Ninja Gaiden, and Halo can hold their own but...
As for Treasure yeah they definately aren't everybody's thing. Hell in their hey day reviewers weren't very friendly too them (just look at how Edge gave Gunstar Heroes a "6"). I enjoy their games though but aside from Sin & Punishment and Gunstar Heroes I fail to see how they are "one of the greatest developers of all-time".
One of the site's forefathers.
Play fighting games!
That's the impression I got from the demo. The GT review said it was planned as the first part of a trilogy.
Well I owned both a SNES and Megadrive and yeah, I picked up the SNES later and the games were so good comparitively that the Megadrive/Genesis didn't come off that well though I still enjoyed a great number of games. Have you tried Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion? That was my favourite megadrive game.
I'm with you on Treasure, but they really have a strong fan following.
WTH is this crap?
Wii SD Card thing: Iwata
“We will make it so that, when there is not enough room on the Wii’s internal memory, you will be able to purchase and download Virtual Console and WiiWare software directly from the Shopping Channel to an SD memory card. We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it. We would like to deal with this issue utilizing two methods. Since the updates to realize these new structures will require significant revisions to the Wii system, and these changes need to be made by taking care of a variety of different angles, this method will become effective beginning next spring. For some of you, this may be considered late. But please know that we really appreciate your cooperation and understanding. We are working hard so we can begin the service as soon as possible.” - Satoru Iwata
I just can't fucking believe NOBODY at Nintendo foresaw this shit.
In other news, I finally got Path of Radiance!
GameCube has some killer titles hidden.
I had both too. And I never played that game but had Mickey's Magical Quest.
All they need to do is update the firmware to support SD card over 2GB and all is solved.
EDIT - So are we going to have:

or
