So I completed Strider, arcade on the Capcom collection using invincibility.

It's honestly a mess and one of the strangest platformer stage design I've ever seen.

You will walk all the way to the right, then assuming that there is a platform below you to jump down to your death. There is no other visual indication of where to go so you jump down and end up falling to your death. This happens on multiple instances. Some surfaces can be clinged to, some can't.

Sometimes you will reach a dead end, only to eventually work out you have to destroy a large piece of scenery. The problem being that you may have gone up, down left and right in the level only to randomly attack something and have the rest of the level open up.

There are times you walk on the ceiling and the controls are reversed. It's like Mario Galaxy, if that game made no sense and controlled like a dog.

I think the most irritating aspect of the game is that some levels force you forward like a schmup level with unbeatable odds and again, it's not always clear where the game wants you to go, leading to excess deaths.

So I've been doing some research on Pixelheart and Storybird Studios.

Apparently they are a Montpellier based French publisher.

Story Bird studio who made Ganryu 2 and Andro Dunos 2 has a few games on Switch. Pixelheart has also published some intresting pixel art games from other devs.

There's Wallachia, which is a Contra style game with Castlevania graphics. Finding Teddy 2 a surreal, dreamy looking platformer. Gigantic Army, clearly their take on Cybernator. There's also a Schmup collection with 3 shooters bundled.

Then there are these Demons of Asteborg and Asterbros games, 16 bit hack and slash platformers.

I didn't play anything this weekend as we had a wedding on Saturday and the required recovery time on Sunday.  The wedding was from my side of the family, people our age.  Was really looking forward to having a good party so those dancing lessons we've been taking could finally be put to the test.  Unfortunately their taste of music didn't leave much room for jiving or swinging or any other civilized form of dancing.  The DJ only started playing danceable songs around 2AM when we were about to go home and by what time any sane person had already long left.

Before bedtime last night, I checked the used car dealership in Gran Turismo 7. To my surprise, they had a '78 Pontiac Trans Am for sale. Now I can live out my childhood Smokey and the Bandit dreams. Happy

I'm glad the weather I have to worry about are the occasional summer hail storms and the rare winter blizzard.

Maybe. I had a vacation plan for Thursday through Monday. I had to come back a day early because the owners of my company were going to be in town. And now I might not be able to leave at all. Blah.

For sure. Fairly lucky where I am, natural disasters aren't a thing. We have some heavy rain at times. And like 5cm of snow which brings the country to its knees.

I've been trying to play Strider without invincibility.

Started to work a few things out, like the little metal orbs you get are like R type ones that protect you. And the little Japanese Kanji are actually hearts for your lifebar.

And you can get a metal... er battle cat?

It's still a pretty weird game, you take down a giant gorilla boss, or even the final boss in mere moments.

I love Strider's atmosphere and artwork.  It was one of my first Sega Genesis games I got after Sonic 1. It felt like a massive leap in tech from the 7800 and SMS games at the time.

If you haven't played it yet, the team that made strider made a follow-up/spirit sequel called Osman or Cannon Dancer for the Arcades back in '96. It never got a home port until last year. They added a few additional features, but it was overpriced for a game that can ultimately be beaten in 30 minutes. But it goes on sale for a much more reasonable price, and if you get a chance you might want to pick that up.

I'd never heard of that game before.  I'll look into it. Thanks!

Besides work I've been in so much back pain I've struggled to even plays video games this week.

Have you seen a doctor? Is it getting less painful over time?

There's a gel called Deep Relief, comes in a purple tube. It's pretty good, won a bunch of product awards.

Does it hurt in a specific area like a lump. Or is it more generalised like muscular pain?

When you hurt it was the onset of pain sudden like you tore something or cramped up?

If you lose control of your bladder or lose feeling around the waist/crotch area doctors recommend you go straight to Accident and Emergency.

No I don't have a doctor. It has gotten better, after getting worse. I'll look up that product.

The pain was specific to the activity I was doing, just a few hours job, but it was using my lower back muscle that balance you, which I usually have no call for using.

If anyone else missed it Double Fine released the last episode of their compelling Making of Psychonauts 2 documentary last week:

https://youtu.be/FojuFCVg_ng?si=lZSC0n7Rjy-zNVSF

It's over 90 minutes long. Not reccomended unless you enjoyed the prior 32 installments.

The whole series really is a gift to geeks interested in what goes into making a game.

I'd say I'd check it out, but I know I won't get around to it.  Perhaps in a few decades when I'm old, retired, and nobody bothers to come visit me, leaving me with oodles of free time.

It's on my wishlist, I want to know if it has any accessibility options like save states etc.

There was also a Strider 2 on ps1 or 2 was it?

I made it past the 2nd stage in Strider 1 without invincibility but some of the missile patterns were ridiculous.

And the slope where bombs appear and explode ar your feet is rigged. I experimented to see if you cam avoid them, but you either run full pelt or nothing.

There's also a modern Strider on PS4 too. I'd forgotten about it but I still have it. It's a really good game too.

That last Strder game was pretty good. I can't remember the name of the developer, but I believe they ended up getting acquired by Amazon shortly after releasing the game, back when Amazon wanted to get into the industry. I wonder how that worked out for them.

Yeah that last Strider game on the Xbox One/PS4 was really good indeed. It was developed by Double Helix.

I was unaware of these Strider sequels. I'd like to try them out.

Looking at 2014 Strider it looks like Capcom could make it a Ninja Gaiden type game and really make a success of the series.
