Damn. It's been forever since I watched Beverly Hills Cop.
I'll tell you too, one of the things that really struck me was how down to earth the movie really is. It's not over the top crazy and it doesn't have any really high stakes. It's basically just a revenge story if anything. It was really refreshing to watch that compared to what most modern comedy or action movies are like.
Been ages since I’ve seen Beverly Hills Cop as well. Also watched a couple of oldish movies this weekend as well, Clear and Present Danger and Charlie’s Angels. Enjoyed them back then and still enjoy them.
I played a bit of The Quarry and Peggle 2. I also watched most of the Mission Impossible movies because my son, who has never seen them, was in an action mood. MI 2 still sucks but the rest are fantastic.
I didn't do much gaming this weekend. I did download Another Crab's Treasure though, so that's something.
And I too watched an old movie. We watched Erin Brockovich, also still a good movie.
I'm currently eyeing the purchase of a refurbished Surface Studio 2+ all-in-one PC. MS has a whole program in place to offer them refurbished in the US, but here in Europe there is no such thing. But I found an IT shop that has one on offer at the moment. No way I'd ever spend the kind of money they're asking for these new, but I could spare the money for a refurb. Especially since I'm about to sign a big project that's worth about a year's income.
My whole workflow has been built around mobility, allowing me to have all my files with me on the go and to just plug it in to a hub with monitor, keyboard and mouse when at my desk. I don't need a Surface Studio PC. But they're so goddamn desirable. Couple that with some good old FOMO due to these opportunities being very rare over here, and the fact that it'd mean I'd then own a VR capable system (even if just) and it's a hard deal to resist. I'll probably never get into VR gaming, and it'll be more of a hassle to actually work on two different PC's due to software license shenanigans. But still. I mean, just look at it:
Yeah it's certainly nice looking.
Been trucking all weekend.
Like a real trucker, getting a bit burnt out. It's a tough life.
Mostly down to the areas in the game that don't have garages.
Having to recover from area B to area A because your truck flips or you run out of fuel. Then having to drive all the way through area A to get back to Area B.
Ahhh, it's unbelievable. I did pretty well by towing two trucks and a fuel trailer to one area and did most things in area B.
The next problem is that certain missions require a crane. If you don't have one you have to recover to your garage in area A to fit it and drive all the way back to area B.
There are also certain trailers that require a low or high saddle. Same thing as the crane, but even worse is that you rock up to a trailer to do a task, and suddenly realise you don't have the right saddle to fit it. And the task menu didn't tell you that you needed that saddle. And even if it did, you would still have to recover to your garage in area A and drive back to area B.
Trailer stores don't allow you to change your saddle or cranes.
Trailers can also only be sold when you drag them back to a trailer store, usually on the other side of the map. So I've given up on selling trailers and leave them scattered around the map instead.
Have you played American Truck Sim or Euro Truck Sim? I found them highly addicting.
I've liked all of MS's hardware, I wish they'd lean into it more, but for whatever reasons they never seem to be fully committed to it -- perhaps because they don't want to tread on the OEM's? But what are the OEM's going to do install linux! (as if).
No, there's a million of these truck or offload sims on the eshop, so many I just assume they're all trash.
Yesterday I did the most epic thing I've ever done in gaming.
So I took 2 trucks across the godamn dam to get to Drummond island. It took so long along the winding road I was exhausted and took a break.
The next thing I had to do was pick up a huge oil rug trailer, the biggest thing you can haul so far in Snowrunner.
It was all fairly okay on the trip back to Smithville dam as most roads were paved.
Then facing the long road back to the drilling site was too much.
So this is what's great about the game, there's a risk/reward mechanic, but it's totally up to you. You set your own goals and plot your own route.
So sometimes I'll choose a different route so it's more fun, or to just see if I can pull it off.
So I took the geographically most direct route. Which involved driving across the river, over narrow, submerged rocks, with no winch points.
Winch points essentially rescue you, should you get stuck, without them you're essentially helpless. So dragging this heavy huge ass drilling rig the size of a small house, my truck didn't have the power to get it over these rocks.
It's a trailer that required a high saddle, the problem being it has these poles at the front and no wheels at the front. So if you go over any kind of small hill, the front lodges on the hill and you can't pull it.
So there I am, detaching the trailer, driving ahead, winching the trailer itself, running out of gas, fighting against raging waters.
And as far as I know, once you lose or tip over your cargo, it stays there until you can rescue it. So I'm thinking if this thing gets stuck in an awkward place I'm never going to be able to rescue it.
I was making no progress. So I got another truck, made the trip behind the rig, across the river on the other side, and jammed it into the back of the rig, hoping it would work.
There was a risk it could overturn and I'd be screwed but the excessive weight of it kept it upright. It shifted forward and I eventually, with much effort made it across the river.
The worst is over, I thought. Except, it wasn't.
There were more hills to climb and a small gap through trees to negotiate, but worse than that there were tree stumps like landmine waiting to get caught on.
Stumps are one of the worst thing in the game, you don't see them till too late, they can stop you in your tracks and damage your truck. I learned a trick through videos, where you can wedge your scout behind a tree and winch over much heavier loads. It didn't work when I tried it, but I adapted it for this rig.
I positioned my 2nd truck behind the rig, winched a tree and heaved this fricking rig over the last hump.
It's a day I'll never forget. It's moments when you drive through two trees where you assumed there was a way through, then have that oh shit moment. And you can't go back.
Is the world persisitent? Would be pretty cool if after a while you're trucking through this trailer graveyard. :lol
We're all proud of you GG!
I think that they've really cornerd the 2-in-1 market for tablets that can also double as a laptop with their orignal Surface Pro line. You only ever see those being used, or iPad Pro's by the Apple elitists. Their other products have to exist alongside OEM competition, so it is only to be expected that they're less succesfull. All of their hardware is very well built, but also pretty expensive when compared to the competition. PC users are just less prone to paying extortionate amounts for hardware than Apple users are I guess.
As for the Surface Studio all in one PC's, they're really a niche product. As with the Surface Pro line they offer something truely unique, but the asking price is just too high, especially considering they're using older laptop parts.

News: Hasbro Invest $1 Billionin games.
If I was on the board of Hasbro I would be asking questions as to why we've given a billion dollars to a clown that can produce a sentence like this:
"Video games is part of that thing when the comapny says it's going to be focusing on certain things."

We really are going to have to (as a culture) are going to go through a period of un-learning the concept of "seeing is believing" when it comes to video presentation. Some of that was in the uncanny valley (the scene driving through the valley actually).
They went overboard with the motion blur and depth of field effects when driving around. Scaling those back would likely reduce some of that uncanny valley feeling.
Edit: That actual valley made me want a new Motorstorm.
