Okay I tested a few more games.
Works great, Road 96 is a fairly low poly slightly blurry game, in 2k its edges are much sharper. Re4 HD in 2k actually look much more detailed, like voodoo magic or something lol.
Asphalt 9 at times looks like it's not even running on Switch. Aside from the framerate woes and occasional times it can't load in the LOD fast enough.
Mario Odyssey has a slight bloomy lighting effect so it inherently looks softer and it's like 900p with dynamic resolution. Here it's much crisper and more colourful. Nothing I like more than inspecting rock textures and some the ones in Odyssey look crazy in 2k.
Now here's where things get crazy, when you have games with better graphics (and/or) a higher resolution the picture quality becomes so clear and the effect is more pronounced.
It can't do anything with low res textures but the actual image quality goes through the roof. There's no artifacts, no weird shimmering or anything (from mclassic) in the image upscaling. Colour is boosted too, blacks become inky black which is awesome but in some games you're probably going to have to turn up the brightness.
Like me, most reviewers, reviewed Mclassic on a 4ktv, and due to the idiosyncrasies of televisions, Mclassic could improve things like AA and more but it only output at 1080p on a 4ktv. So reviews were like "it works but marginal improvements etc"
When you can use this dongle that forces your TV to accept the 2k signal the Mclassic can output the difference is night and day. And I'm not comparing 720p to 1440p which some videos from the company did (which i felt were a touch disingenuous). I'm comparing the 1080p image the Switch outputs vs the 1440p the Mclassic can do.
The picture can be virtually crystal clear with games like Metroid Prime remastered. When I loaded in some of my favourite areas in Xenoblade 3, I was amazed. It makes me want to replay these games.
BTW you guys should get in on Xenoblade 3, I honestly prefer it to Tears of the Kingdom and Monolithsoft has gone further than virtually any other Switch dev to make a huge and high production game.
Back to Mclassic + dongle, this is like some super high tech version of the N64 expansion pack that allowed you to boost the resolution of Turok 2.
It works so well Nintendo could package and sell it. What's cool is that it will work with your xb1, ps4, or any console that can output a progressive scan hdmi image.
I really want to replay Crysis 3 with this.
It actually works with your dvds and blu rays but I haven't tested them with this 2k Switch yet.

Not sure how useful my pics are here as the browser distorts the size and framing of the first one. Basically look at the castle in both pictures, concentrating on the jagged lines and edges. They're much reduced with Mclassic on.
Holy crap Luigis Mansion in 2k via the Mclassic looks borderline unbelievable at times. Not only is it more detailed, everything is rounder.
Hard to put into words, but it makes games feel more rounded visually, so games like Luigi or Mario that often depend on roundness; like the hat, or the nose, rounded shoes or rounded ghosts look and feel more solid and 3d in a way. It brings the picture to life. Also the colour representation is so much better through mclassic, reminds me of the OLED colours, even though this tv isn't an OLED.
That was why I didn't get the oled one back in May.
I feel like it was well worth it when selling the old one to pay for the new one. Everything about its build quality is so solid. I hope Switch 2 is at least on par. Oled feels like it was made to last.
Also some games look so good on the OLED you'll play more portable. Tons of OLED owners sell off their docks. I bought a spare Dock but I hardly use it. Also I used to bring my Dock to my parents house to use. Hardly do that anymore, as I don't feel the need to play on the big screen. The oled screen is big and good enough to enjoy as it is.
But now I have a 2k Switch I'll probably play the bigger games on the TV for the improved resolution. Tested out Links awakening, couldn't notice any difference but I didn't do a side by side comparison.
Xenoblade 2 looks better. It's one of the blurriness Switch games but indefinitely sharper and more colourful. Outlast looks higher res but the grain filter makes it difficult to appreciate.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I'm late, I worked last night and now working tonight so I have been busy. I did get Alan Wake 2 on sale but haven't started it. I beat cocoon, awesome puzzle game will review soon. Oh I got sonic superstars, going through that now, it's not mania... it's not genesis quality but it isn't a disaster at least. I am also playing Yakuza 3 on gamepass, trying to get back into the series as I have a lot of games to play.
Oh and I bought Astalon on steam sale which I believe also recommended! Only played a little but it seems great!
What, what is all this?! I just put out all my consoles, I bought an AV to HDMI converter cause my TV is HDMI only so the image is complete and utter shit but my old game systems work. I tested them one by one and they all work great except... GAMECUBE!!!! The laser won't read games. I searched it and it's a common issue where you have to open the GC up completely and turn some laser screw to fix it. So I'll have to do that.
so this device will turn my craptastic looking old systems in to HD for my LGCX? How do I get AV cables connected to that thing? Using an adapter, then connect that adapter to that other adaptor that connects to that mclassic thing?
I bought a new surface pro. It's an I7 model with 16Gig Ram and came with a typecover as well. Regular price would have been over €2000, I got it for €1299. That's normally the price of the entry level model without the typecover. Only downside is that it's in all black, which is very boring.
The Mclassic needs an hdmi cable going into it. So you have to get hdmi adaptors for your old systems. Or something like a retro tink and then plug the output hdmi cable into the back of the mclassic. Some hdmi adaptors are dirt cheap, others way too expensive imo.
The euro gamecube doesn't work at all as it outputs 480i. You need a progressive scan signal for the mclassic to work. Even Madworld and Little Kings Story won't work with wii as its a 480i signal.
480p games will only upscale to 1080p but the results vary game by game (check my old thread on it)
720p games can scale up to 1440p if I remember. I tested out 360 on a 1080p TV and it did correct some jaggies but varying results per game.
Now I've got Mclassic taking Switch at 1080p output (regardless of the native res of the game) its upscaling everything to 2k on a 4ktv. And virtually everything looks noticeably sharper and cleaner and more colourful. It's become a must buy IMO.
I even tested Xenoblade 2, one of the blurriness games on Switch. Whilst it can't do anything about the framerate or really low res areas, most other areas were improved a lot. If they ever do a proper remaster of this game with better textures it will look amazing as the art is so beautiful.
To answer your question its a really easy plug and play device. If you already have an AV to hdmi converter, the important part is that your converter has to output a progressive scan image, 480p.
The output hdmi cable from your hdmi converter which normally goes into your TV, you plug it into Mclassic instead, then attach an hdmi cable from Mclassic to TV.
The evanlink 2k adaptor just goes directly into the back of Mclassic, its like as big as half a thumb. Super easy, no tinkering with options.
My original GCN had disk read errors; the lens would get dirty every 5-6 months. I just opened the disk tray and cleaned the lens with a cotton swab and a tiny amout of alcohol. It always worked for me. Might be worth a try before dissassembling it.
