Ubi just basically confirmed Switch has Wii like motion control.

Not much a surprise, but how did they do that?  I haven't read anyting about that anywhere?

It's already been confirmed that one of the removable joysticks will have an IR sensor and that the Switch has a sensor pad built into the top of it I believe.  I think it's a safe bet to say Wiimotes will still function with it.

I was aware that Switch is strongly rumoured to feature wiimote like functionality, but I haven't seen any big publisher imply it.

Not confirmed, but Laura Dale says it's built into..... the bottom.

I've put ****************stars*********************around the important part.

Ubisoft says Switch is "a good match" for their style, hardware aims to unite the mobile/console worlds

Coming from a Polygon interview with Ubisoft's Xavier Poix...

“The biggest thing for us when we’re learning about a new console is ‘Does it change the way we play?’. If it does not change the way we play, but it’s more power, it's more memory or stuff like this then it doesn't change a lot the way we design the game.

But when it comes with something that really changes the way you play — for instance the Wii ... then it's a total change in the way we imagine our games. That’s why, in our case, it comes with new brands because this is the moment where you are totally creative and you want to design a game based on that new way of playing.

*******************************The Switch is very clear as a premise. The way it changes the way you play doesn't come necessarily with the controllers, because they were here with the Wii as well ... but in the way it is mobile.*********************************************************

The way you can play it on the bus and go home and put it on your TV immediately and come back to your room because somebody else wants to watch TV, this is very interesting. Not necessarily revolutionizing the way you play, but since we are world creators that try to put the players in our universe and find ways to keep them there. It's very exciting to find ways of staying in this world.

I think it's a good match for our style. And I think yes, this is a good evolution because for the first time you have a console that is bringing two worlds together which is the mobile-handheld and the usual console experience.

We are thinking that if Nintendo’s philosophy is really to gather those two worlds, if adult players and console players could be the same community, then what's the best user journey of one player that would own the Switch? Not necessarily only with the Switch mind you, but we tried to consider this in the way our upcoming games are being designed. We thought about the time needed for a play session in this game to fit the experience of a handheld.

When you are playing a game, an adult console game or mobile game for instance, you are spending less time than you then when you are at home in front of your TV for hours. So that's something that we have in mind for the games that we are producing right now.”

I've listened through the new GU podcast, in a few sittings as per usual.  And as per usual a lot of fleeting remarks I had have already fled my memory, so here's the only one I remember:

MS and Sony moving to an ecosystem makes sense for them, as hardware is the part of the software-hardware equation they lose money in.  If they can cut R&D costs by releasing more incremental updates based on less-custom parts every 2-3 years, while locking their consumers into their back- and forward compatible ecosystem in one go, it's an all win situation for them.  For Nintendo on the other hand, things are different, as they do make money from their hardware, and their hardware is also differentiated more between generations, while Sony and MS work more on software-side innovation in online and peripheral functionality like streaming.

I'm also recalling Aspro comparing VR to those stereoscopic image viewers of old, where it's nice to have, but not inherently better than just looking at a 2D image.  Again, AR will prove to be the watershed moment, as that does allow for a big breakthrough as our virtual and physical worlds finally, at least visually, merge.

Going even further back in your podcast, I agree that the Switch is a continuation of the merits and mistakes of the WiiU.  I still think it's success will hinge largely on it's pricepoint.  If Nintendo manages to sell stand-alone versions without the dock for €159 within the first year after launch, they might stand a chance of garnering handheld-like sales.  If not, it won't be able to shake the shakles of continueing poor home console sales.

If I listen to the podcast I am just going to end up yelling at my phone cause Aspro is saying something dumb about VR. Nyaa

Marvel vs Capcom rumours aplenty:

  • Marvel vs Capcom 4 may actually be a reboot
  • Marvel side may be more focused on the MCU characters and less on the X-men
  • may be a two on two fighter with one assist character
  • Iron Galaxy may port over Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 to current gen systems

We'll find out Saturday night.

Sal was at a place where authors were reading their books and his phone had to keep ringing; his ringtone was: "Who's phone is ringing? Mine it's mine! Who's phone is ringing? Mine it's mine! Who's phone is ringing? Mine it's mine! My phone ph-ph-ph-phone my phone ph-ph-ph-phone"

I also like when Murr had to interview Danica Mckeller in a speedo because he was told it was for a body building interview.

The phone bit was torture. I find Sals horror movie punishments. The cornfield and old spooky house. You guys need to watch this show.
