Critical Consensus: No Man's Sky
Mixed first impressions from reviewers coming to grips with space exploration game gamesindustry.biz impressions gamingeek
Not me. I'm pretty sure the gameplay isn't for me, and that's even before factoring in that this game will take a very long time to beat. I don't think the gameplay loop would hold my attention for that long.
Neo and Scorpio are coming out too late during this console cycle. They may as well work on PS5 and Xbox 4.
They basically are PS5 and Xbox4. But they're generation agnostic platforms, like Ipads are. I'm not sure if we'll ever see a clear generational divide like we used to anymore, where your library won't function on the newer hardware anymore. I also don't believe we won't be seeing Scorpio exclusive games in a couple of years. Although the gimping of the CPU could make it technically possible, as long as they prohibit devs from using the GPU for computational tasks ensuring that the only difference would be a visual one.
I think the length is a concern for me as well. I probably won't have the time to fully invest in it.
It's an ideal game for the minecraft generation though. Millenials are accustomed to playing endless games with no real goal or purpose. For us rusty oldtimers it might prove a bit too much though.

So could patching a system to make it stronger be the new norm?
At least I don't 'forget' my traps when setting out on a catch quest.
I have no idea what you're referring to. Only someone who has very poor eyesight would miss quest instructions when selecting a quest. Or someone drunk.
Anyone picking up No Man's Sky? My funds dried up pretty quickly so I doubt I will for a bit. I'd love to try it out though since it looks pretty fun.
Not that I have anything to play it on, but no probably not. From all of the reviews in process I have read, it sounds like at the very least the first 10 hours are a genuine pain in the ass just trying to gather resources. That does not sound like fun at all.

I don't think overclocking hardware is a sustainable means for improvement, just look at Nintendo's run with the GC, Wii and WiiU. So either the hardware will need to be engineered in-house to guarantee compatability, like Apple does, or compatability will need to be done on a software basis, which is less efficient.
What I find most upsetting about this possible new future for consoles is how it reduces a generational leap to little more than a bump in GPU. No one will be making games with lots of NPC's or advances in AI because that would mean older consoles couldn't run them.

Well some might argue that people can't just blame everything on booze, hypothetically speaking that is.

Hypothetically of course.
Actually I can't blame either of those. Something about the quest descriptions just does not quite process in my brain. I see the monster and I see the sub quest and I tend to miss all the other details. It has gotten me into trouble on an occasion or two.
He's smiling because he gets an extra long vacation this year!
Works out well for everyone. More time to chow Giselle. Time to Garapollo to get some experience. Then Brady comes in fresh week 5. Gotta at least make it to the super bowl this year.

Now we're talking MH, how easy is it to kill beasts with a ranged weapon? Aren't you basically just a sitting duck for them to charge? I never tried because I don't like micromanagment of the ammo for the bowguns, and can't be bothered with the bow as it's damage depends on your distance to the monster, which seems like such a fuss to keep track of.

No. I don't think you are a sitting duck at all. Remember, when you use a bow you are also wearing light armor so you can dodge and roll while your weapon is drawn. That is a pretty nice advantage to have and can get you out of a lot of trouble.
The guns are another story, but coating arrows is not too difficult of a process. You just have to remember to refresh your stock at the store in between missions. Managing gun ammo is a genuine pain in the butt. That is why I stay away from them as a rule.
The only real drawback to the bow is the lack of damage output. At best they do half of what any standard melee weapon is doing. Sometimes not even that. When you go against a strong armored monster, you can run up against the time limit very easily if you are not using a lot of extra tricks like bombs and such. That is why I have a gun blade that I use about half of the time.
Neo will be fine next to Scorpio just as Xbox One is fine next to PS4. How much of a difference is going to be shown in multi-platform games? Hardly any. The only PS4 games that look truly a step up from Xbox One games are like Uncharted 4 and maybe Ratchet. The spec numbers look huge, but the visual difference in what your eyes see is not even the difference between XBOX and Gamecube back in 2002.
But this gen they surveyed people and the no1 reason for choosing PS4 over XB1 was "resolution", now Sony are going to be releasing this more powerful version of the PS4, the point of which is to give more power, for 4K, or for VR. And now everyone knows MS is coming out with a beast of a machine (for a console).
There's a 2 teraflop difference between Neo and Scorpio while PS4 and XB1 only have like a 600gflop difference. I get what you mean about XB1 vs PS4 graphics, but it's not about how things actually look on screen anymore. The narrative will be driven by the media and by gamers on message boards. If you want the most powerful console, the most cutting edge one, the most future proofed one, Neo is stuck in some in between no mans land now.
Scorpio isn't just XB1 Plus, it's their next gen console essentially, the jump from XB1 to Scorpio is much bigger than PS4 to Neo.

Will you be on the east coast at all? Edit: I totally missed the next replies. Maybe you can visit your friends down south while in the east coast.
My friends down south? Mexico?

1. To answer the first question, "is it easy to get to Redwood National Park from San Francisco" the answer is not really. It's a lovely drive, but it's also 5 or 6 hours without stops.
Aw shit.
Thanks for the advice.

That doesn't usually work unless it's unlocking something that was previously used for something else. Like when XB1 ditched Kinect.
Nintendo should have unlocked the 1GB of RAM used for the OS. Perhaps then their games could have had AA

I was just going to say that.
I dont think Neo is, but Spencer said Scorpio was a new generation.
