The Vita is now an 'extender' as Sony focuses on its network
Anyone catch this? Seems they are repositioning this as a peripheral and giving up on retail games?

Amiibos are coming to Mario Kart guys:
"You'll give your personal amiibo all sorts of customization, and we were told support for the toys would also be coming to Mario Kart 8."
What if the non-mario amiibos unlocked their respective characters in Mario kart? Samus vs Link? Special tracks anyone?
Sure makes the WiiU look like a better deal
It's looking more and more likely that the Vita will end up being the first gaming hardware I bought for which I haven't bought a single game in physical form (I do have two games which came as download codes in the box)

Mario: P

Vital stats: The PDP reps said that all three controllers will be a limited run, and will be available for pre-order at Gamestop starting now. I can't find them on the Gamestop site, so who knows how limited they are or when orders are officially open, but it sounds like it'll be soon. The PDP site lists them as going for $24.99.
The controllers differ from a classic GameCube controller in a few ways - they have two matching thumbsticks, they have two shoulder buttons and a "home" button, which will let them work much like a Wii classic controller pro. As for the wiimotes, the Yoshi wiimote will only be available in Europe, and the other two will be available in North America at least
Notably, the company is shifting gears in how it sells the PlayStation Vita, looking upon it less as a standalone game console and more as an accessory that extends the PlayStation Network.
"We’ve taken a more holistic view with our platforms. With Remote Play, Vita has now essentially become an extender or an enhancer for the main platform for other rooms in the house, or when someone else wants to use the main screen," says House, claiming that Sony is also hoping to market it to younger players in the future. The company is also embracing the Vita's indie appeal.

Sounds like boxed retail support has dried up and they're essentially giving up on selling it as a portable gaming device.
The more I see of this, the more it appears to me as a blatant cash grab. Nintendo won't tie them to meaningfull DLC as they can't afford to have Mario Kart without Mario in it. Thus they're just some physical representation of your achievements accross multiple games, a gamer card you can only boast with while in game. Thus they're entirely superfluous. This also eliminates any desire to own them all as you don't "see the figurines come to life in your game". The novelty of arranging them on your cupboard isn't as strong of a draw by far.
This could have been huge if it there were enough different amiibo's and if they had dedicated software made for them. Just tacking them on to existing IP's won't do the whole thing any favours in my opinion.

Oh yeah I agree. But if you like to collect little figurines, they can be hard to resist. I think they should be £3 but looking at Disney Infinity prices...... er...
Oh shoot

They look way too pollished to be £3 a piece. And pricing like that would make sense if there were dozens to collect. By the looks of it we'll get their major characters, and that's that.
I'm sure it will expand eventually. Starting with the core is more sensible and palettable way to intro them.
