Why do something like this for a well anticipated game? It's getting great reviews, people are happy with it. What is the purpose of an article like this? Do they do this with a lot of other games too?

That polygon article is beyond retarded.  All that bullshit supposed research and all the charts and graphs and numbers to say that MK8 will only sell a small fraction of previous instalments because the U install base is only a small fraction of that of previous Nintendo consoles and handhelds.

Maybe but the N64's userbase was growing rapidly, whereas the Wii U's userbase may actually be shrinking for all I know.

For reference, end of 2011, there were 15 million 3DS consoles sold. 9 million added in just 3 months thanks to Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

The N64 had shipped 6.1M at the end of FY1997 and MK64 was released that FY in Japan and NA. It outsold its install base by a factor of almost 2...
