Battlefield 4 Reviews

Polygon - 7.5

DICE has failed once again to make Battlefield 4 a serious singleplayer contender. But its emphasis on ambitious, team-based multiplayer does wonders to wash the taste of that failure away. Battlefield 4 takes the elements that have made each installment work and glues them together successfully — even if some rough edges show here or there.

Gamespot - 8

So with five versions of the game spread across two generations of consoles, which is the best Battlefield? Unsurprisingly, the PC version remains on top with excellent visuals and sprawling 64-player matches that make the most of the great maps and incredible combat diversity.

IGN - 8.5

Battlefield 4 is an excellent multiplayer game that makes the most of its ambitions, proving once again that destruction is a valuable strategic addition to competitive combat, which reaches its full potential with two killer Commanders are bringing out the best in their squads. On the other hand, its single-player campaign is a disappointing, but functioning and familiar game with overwhelming action and remarkable spectacle.

Joystiq - 9

The main draw for the Battlefield series has always been the chaotic camaraderie of its multiplayer, and that's no different here. But the sum of Battlefield 4's parts shows that DICE is capable of more. Not only has the developer iterated on and progressed its marquee multiplayer, it's provided a tight and cohesive campaign that is everything a military shooter needs to be.

Adam Sessler/Rev3: 4/5

+ scale remains stunning

+ smart new gamemodes

+ encounters can be thrilling and inventive

- massive levels can hurt pacing

- weak sp campaign

Game Informer: 8.75

Battlefield 4 doesn't advance the series in any significant way, but the subtle improvements provide enough incentive for multiplayer fans to invest heavily in the land, air, and sea battles. Given the underwhelming performance of yet another story campaign, maybe DICE was on to something in ignoring single-player altogether in Battlefield 1942. Imagine what the studio could do if it invested all that manpower into making its already good multiplayer experience even better.

PC Gamer: 84

DICE is certainly guilty of taking an “if it ain’t broke” attitude to creating BF4, but its modest multiplayer refinements alongside excellent maps are enough to make it one of our favorite current FPSes. A cynic would call BF4 a deluxe map pack in sequel’s clothing. If that’s your predisposition, know that it’s at least a wonderful map pack, one with enough variety, depth, and quality to survive a year of intense play.

Eurogamer: 8

Consider this the last gasp of the old multiplayer model then. It's a fine swansong, especially when played on the most powerful platforms, and in particular if you treat the campaign as a free bonus feature. It's hard not to wonder just what DICE will be able to do when it no longer has to hobble its designs to suit ageing hardware, though.

Gametrailers - 9.5

Oh yeah I was playing Deus Ex offscreen last night, another recent example of great image quality offscreen along with Rayman Legends and Wind Waker. It's probably because they are already colourful so you don't feel the colour loss and because they are all fairly crisp games so they come across really well on the gamepad screen. I wonder what Arkham Origins and AC4 look like offscreen.

These are the problems I had with early U games image quality off screen:

The Wii U gamepad screen is much better than you think - Updated

Videogamer review AC4indecision

There's only so many times, however, that you can tolerate the poorly-defined stealth and terrible AI. Eavesdropping returns, and is as poor as before, and most missions devolve into 'follow the man, kill the man' repetition. Your adversaries are also too dumb to notice you most of time (you can still pull four guards into the same haystack), mitigating the thrill.

Gameinformer said:

Black Flag is a major disappointment when it comes to variety; the main missions all feel the same, with a tiring abundance of lame “tail the guard” and “eavesdrop on the conversation” objectives. I enjoyed the more exciting scenarios and assassinations when they surfaced, but they are vastly outnumbered by these filler tasks that highlight the imprecise stealth mechanics.

The story isn’t much better than the missions. Edward’s obsession with money and lack of personal conviction are all a part of his character arc, but those traits make the plot haphazardly bounce around for the majority of the game.

Black Flag is ultimately better than Assassin’s Creed III (which I did not formally review). Some elements seem crafted directly in response to criticisms about the previous game. You get to the piracy rather quickly, without the need for several hours of tutorial missions. Weapon switching happens immediately thanks to the d-pad assignment, and fast-travel locations are convenient and plentiful. However, some of the same complaints resurface with a vengeance: frustrating stealth, numerous glitches, and poor performance (the framerate is all over the place on the current-gen incarnations). These flaws, combined with the disjointed story and repetitive main missions, make Black Flag a game that fails to live up to its full potential. Though Edward’s voyage isn’t all smooth sailing, the choppy waters don’t sink the ship.

Wii Sports Tennis on Wii U with motionplus :
Shimamura

We had a lot of challenges with Tennis. We wanted to do what we hadn't been able to do with the original game.

Iwata

The original Wii Sports was made incredibly well so that it appeared to be able to tell which way the Wii Remote was facing and how the player swung it, but there were limits in being able to tell the movements on the Wii Remote controller just by the accelerometer. Without a gyro sensor like the Wii Remote Plus, it simply isn't able to gather enough information. So to make up for the lack of information from the Wii Remote, (Keizo) Ota-san13 and his team filled the holes where the game made assumptions of the movements. 13. Keizo Ota: Technology Development Department, Entertainment Analysis & Development Division. He was director of Tennis for Wii Sports. For more, see the session of "Iwata Asks" over Wii Sports.

Shimamura

That's right. But this time, you position yourself for a forehand shot with your good hand, turn for a backhand, return to face center and so forth-which is all detected by the gyro sensor of the Wii Remote Plus.

Iwata

You can even tell when your opponent is flustered. (laughs)

Shimamura

Right! (laughs) With the previous game, when the ball came to your backhand, the racket automatically switched accordingly, so you just had to swing at the right timing. But this time, you have to decide for yourself whether you will return the ball with a backhand or move around for a forehand. It feels even more immersive.

Iwata

It's more realistic tennis.

Shimamura

Yes. In a way, since you can do more, some may feel like it's more difficult, but once they get used to it, I think people will declare through Online Banter before a match that they're only going to use forehand shots or only backhand shots and so on, so I think gameplay has broadened.

Iwata

Can you do more than just forehand and backhand shots?

Shimamura

The moment you hit the ball, if you swing as if covering over something, you can apply topspin.

Iwata

Which will give it a good bounce.

Shimamura

Yes. And if you swing as if grazing the bottom of the ball, it will result in a slice, so when the ball falls, you can give it some lift. If the front opponent is at the net and you want to hit into an empty space further back, you can pop the racket upward for a lob shot. You can distinguish between these three shots with quite a bit of precision.

Iwata

It's quite thorough. Can you make those distinctions easily?

Shimamura

Yes. But it's easier to understand if you actually see the movements.

Iwata

All right, break it down for us, Shimamura in Motion! (laughs)

Shimamura

Okay! (laughs)

Videogamer have a whole article on what needs to change in Assasins Creed.

Videogamer said:

Assassin's Creed 4's mechanics are as out of time as its settings, and the graphical upgrade of the next-generation versions isn't enough to distract from that. Here's what needs to change. Like the fate that befell perennial series cipher/bellend Desmond, Assassin's Creed's ageing mechanics have to die. For years the franchise's poor AI, awful checkpointing, imprecise controls and unstealthy stealth have undermined a game rich in terms of both budget and ambition, but poor in terms of execution and understanding how to parlay its excellent hook into something truly great.

Black Flag's problem is the core of the game is still the same as those that came before.

Fixing those problems seems easy. First on the chopping block must be the eavesdropping missions, where you have to stalk someone, remaining within a certain proximity to listen to them. They are unbelievably dull, made worse by spotty detection mechanics - sometimes you can be seen by a guard about three feet away and just hide in a bush; on other occasions you'll be spotted from miles away with very little warning.

Checkpointing is also an issue, repopulating the world with enemies you've already dealt with before the game saved. The game also hates out-of-order execution: using your brain and outwitting the game's linear mission processing generally ends in it doggedly refusing to continue until you do it a certain way.

Controls are still problematic, as well: run and jump are essentially on the same button, thwarting many a daring escape as you fruitlessly run up a building, rather than off to safety. Land combat has improved from 3, but despite all your options it's still a case of hitting 'counter' then 'kill'.

But there's a deeper issue than just the base mechanics to consider, as poor as they can be. Stupid enemy intelligence is a small issue compared to the fact that the mission structure, and the narrative (and Ubisoft's slavish devotion to both), are nothing more than a 12-hour long series of tutorials and fetch quests.

'Ass Creed' needs to either gut its core and rebuild its whole approach to stealth and AI, or try something radical. Otherwise any sequel may well be the shiniest, dullest game going.

This guy just became my hero.

Watch Dogs, Ghosts and AC4 are hardly going to be the best on the Wii U (in terms of graphics and polish, which is what the thing you quoted was lauding). The rest are current/last gen AKA old.

Better than current gen yes, as Ubisoft and Activision have already said so, unless you have some new information to share.

Call of Duty Ghosts Wii U uses "powerful next-gen engine"

Infinity Ward says the Wii U Version of COD Ghosts is not Current or Next-Gen

Assassin’s Creed IV Wii U visuals in between current/next-gen

Watch Dogs on Wii U 'is superior to current-gen'

Nintendo console version looks better than on PS3 and 360, says Ubisoft creative director

The thing I quoted said:

1 year later: Quietly the Wii U is the best console for 3rd party ports

"I am specifically talking about technical performance as compared to X360/PS3 only."

Did you miss that?

Your definition of 'old' is any version of a newly released game availible now? Maybe you missed it but the bulk of PS4 and X1's games this year and next are versions of games that are going to be availible on current gen platforms. And this disregards that Watch Dogs was made as a next gen game and the U version is based on that. As well as games like COD Ghosts which are "neither current not next gen" on Wii U but "it's own thing" as Activision have said.

Even ACIV is said to be between current and next gen on Wii U according to Ubisoft too, along with Watch Dogs. To me 'old' games are late ports, any multiformat version of a game released at the same time is new. Your terminology is off. You'd do better using current gen/next gen terminology instead of old/new because it's confusing.

So I assume you're calling games current gen because there is no next gen version? So what does that make PS4 and Xbone versions of current gen games? Old too?

Penello/"Xbox dev" talk rumor-mongers: "Like the Xbox One has become Britney Spears"

Posting on Reddit, Microsoft's director of product planning Albert Penello and a "Confirmed Xbox One Dev" have hit back at what the former terms "the frenzy for news, drama and behind-the-scenes dealings".

"It's like Xbox One has become Britney Spears back when every part of her life was under constant surveillance by the mediapaparazzi," observed the unnamed developer. "Every detail, relevant or not, could be taken, fed, digested through social media, and emerge as a complete new beast over the span of a day.

"A console launch is huge and intricate," he or she went on. "Every product has bugs and will have bugs throughout the entire product lifetime. I suppose media outlets need to dig for straws to create "content" for their readers. Also QFE5 is several weeks old as we've improved the OS even more since then." ("QFE5" is a version of Xbox One's Software Development Kit, according to Polygon writer Emily Gera.)

Penello:

"There is a really bizarre phenomenon going on right now where the frenzy for news, drama, and behind-the-scenes dealings is clouding logic and reason," Penello wrote elsewhere on the site. "There is nothing going on behind the scenes nearly as interesting as everyone would like to believe.

"We are a month away from launch, and people are working hard to finalize the last of the bugs. There are still a lot things left to be done. We're crunching and I'm sure Sony's crunching too.

"I know people are excited. I'm sorry but things are nowhere near as dire or dramatic or exciting as everyone would like to believe. That's why I'm not commenting on every single random rumor that comes along, because everything I see is so drastically overblown vs. reality."

Better than last gen (as it can only be referred to after the PS4 and Xbox One are out). Yay? I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here. The Wii U should have better versions of games than the PS360, and I expect that to be the standard even if early ports weren't so great. It's good that they're better versions...but at this stage, it's a bit meh when they're current gen games. It's like getting excited over the Far Cry remake when the 360 first came out. Let's see how some next (current) gen only ports go along the way, and then go crazy if they're good (which they should be). But like I said, I'm glad the ports are of a high quality. My issue was with the quote, not anything you've said.

And obviously. The line up of the PS4 and Xbox One are also terrible. What's your point? The point in the quote that I was replying to was that people aren't paying attention to Wii U ports because the Wii U has a low install base. No, people aren't paying attention to Wii U ports because who cares about ports like that? People desperate for games at best, such as the low install base of Nintendo. In fact, if the Wii U had more decent games, then that post would probably never have been made in the first place. There's also an automatic media bias towards multiplats on non-Nintendo consoles, but that also has little to do with install base as was seen with the Wii. And the GameCube.

Wii U retail report. I went to buy Sonic Lost World at Best Buy and they didnt have the game out on the shelves. Meanwhile there are a million AC4 and BF4 for the big two, no AC4 Wii U. I had to ask for them to find Sonic, it took them 10 minutes to realize they have it in a cage in the front, only two copies. This is not a rare event, most of the time you cant find new Wii U games on shelves, they just dont care to put them up. Oh and the Skylanders section is about 3x as big as the Wii U section in the store.

This is not just happening locally, I am right now out of town and see the same thing. I see it at BB, at Kmart, at Target, Wii U is practically dead.

Wow. It's nearly the holiday season. There's new systems right around the corner... and the news is deader and duller than a typical week in July. All I see is sequel, sequel, sequel of all the usual suspects and really nothing else of note. This generation is dead, but, problem is, next gen isn't looking too promising either.

Dragon Quest rumors are heating up again thanks to Reggie's fucking Twitter account. I can't deal with him playing with my emotions like that. Just announce something already!  There are 3 DQ games in Japan right now that have recently been released and no word on any of them heading to the West. When lord? When's going to be my time?!?!??!

I came on to do a retail report myself.  I had some time to kill yesterday so went ot the game store (got a CE version of modern warfare 2 while I was at it).

The Vita section has been removed.  I asked the clerk about it, she said the regional manager came by and said "That is where the PS4 display will go" and to take the Vita inventroy and store it.  The "Walmart" and "RadioShack" in the same mall pulled their Vita stuff months ago.

Still no Wii U displays.  Most of the space for Nintendo is DS and 3DS related. Wii U gets a shelf four rows high about 6 games wide in the back corner near the used PC section.

They said the 2DS has been selling well adn they are replenishing their stock as they deplete it.

Lots of in-store promo for PS4, nothing to indicate the XB1 is coming at all.  I asked what the launch day pre-order status was, PS4 is sold out, XB1 launch day pre-orders are still available.

It hasn't been announced, but I doubt it. the theory was once the first expansion was released in Japan they would bundle it together with the main version and then announce it for the west. Hasn't happened yet
