Maybe they just didn't have the neccessairy machinery to shrinkwrap the games  Nyaa

Anyhow, if they sell them as new, Nintendo surely would have come knocking on their door, demanding royalties.

But what's the point of spending $100 million developing a controller than looks and plays the same as your last controller anyway? So the sticks are slighting better? The button latency is slightly better? Who exactly was complaining about the 360 controller? They fixed a problem that wasn't broke and wasted $100 million that could have been given to charity or something.,

Huge PS Vita sale this and next week! Im going to get New Little King's Story. I didnt even know there was a vita version. I heard its terrible but its $10 so I will finally play it.

The fuck? Buy the Wii version, it's better. The vita version is not the same game and has been altered for the worse. It's not even by the same developer if you read the details, there was an interview about it.

I really don't know.  However, passing a product off as something it is not surely is to be considered fraud.

What impresses the hell out of me is the press release they put out to comment on whether or not they were selling new games as used for a higher price. They essentially said nothing other than "our prices are competitive" and then turned it into a promotion for being a Power Rewards member. That take balls the size of watermelons.

The point is that they have to stay ahead of competition.  I agree that $100.000.000 sounds a bit outlandish, but I can not say that I don't care for improvements to the gamepad.  The rumble feature really sounds sweet, and there's the added 'brow' with Kinect-related stuff.  Heck, I bet just copying Nintendo's 20 year old D-pad patend would equate to a large chunck of money  Nyaa

Plus, costs add up fast.  They'll have been working on this for multiple years.  What do you think an engineer with such a job earns on a jearly basis?  How about playtesting?  Optimisation?  If they can produce the same controller, with the same level of sturdiness, but they use 5% less plastic, how much will that save them once they start manufacturing 50 million controllers?  The list just goes on.

Also, fixing things that are broke is a mechanics job.  It's a designers job to fix things that weren't broke.

That's retarded. Sorry.

EDIT: Don't mean to insult you, but spending $100 million to get ahead of what competition? It's like MS and Sony are running a race against eachother, to make totally minor almost inperceptible changes to the same freaking design we've seen since basically the Dreamcast controller. And if they've spent all this money to develop what broadly looks near identical to their old controller design, it's a massive waste of money.

For the average gamer by far the biggest added value to any game will never be some extra screen, its online play. Wii U has utterly failed at that and third party companies are starting to flat out revome multiplayer modes from the Wii U version. That is Nintendo's biggest blunder.

I have a completely different perspective to that. Wii U is more than capable of hosting online modes and games, if third parties choose not to do them, that's on them, not Nintendo. If Nintendo doesn't want to add a online mode to each and every game they make, that's their choice and I don't expect them too. But I'm not one of these average gamers you speak of.

EA has its own issues, fairly crappy financials which made them dial back on a number of projects and platforms and their issues with Nintendo seem more based on Origin at the fallout there. One "half a batman game" doesn't really prove your point when there are many other games with full online modes and DLC on Wii U. At the end of the day the system is capable of all this, it's up to a 3rd party if they want to implement it or not. If they don't that's their decision, not Nintendos and as a consumer people can then make an informed choice as to whether pick up the game on the platform they want. If they pick up the game on another platform, well that's too bad, maybe if developers didn't treat Wii U as sloppy seconds they would get more good faith from us gamers. Wii U is a well connected system with a good shop front, download capabilities and further support for using external usb hard drives.

Dvader said:

No one will want a Wii U version of a game over a PS4 or Xbox version, most wouldnt want the Wii U version over the PS3 versions.

You're wildly over generalising here, there were over 3.5 million people who bought COD on Wii for instance and those versions looked tons worse than the other versions. Wii U is capable of producing gorgeous looking games, regardless of the competition.

"I could get full online support, trophies, all the DLC, why should I get the gimped version?"

You're assuming all Wii U versions will be gimped that all will not have all the DLC, full online support for instance, that's not true for every game. And some people put value on different features.

Dvader said:

They are not a primary system, it will be a machine that you just play Nintendo games on and the very rare 3rd party exclusive.

For some people that makes it a primary system. Nintendo have consistently been producing excellent exclusive games for well over 25 years now and if you want to play them you have to get their systems.

No YOU're retarded  Nyaa

I agree that $100 million is high.  I don't know how they managed to spend that amount of money on it, but according to them, they did.  But let me repeat myself.  Say they can save $0.01 in raw materials.  Now lets look at 360 lifetime sales.  About 80 million units sold?  With say 2 controllers per system on average.  That's saving 160.000.000 x 0.01 or $1.6 million.  What would the cost be to research if the controller would be just as durable with 1 cents less in raw materials?  I doubt it'll match the projected savings.

And there you have it.  Thousands of dollars 'wasted' on researching something that you and I won't even notice.

We don't even know how they calculated that number.  It could include anything, up to the sandwiches they ordered for lunch.

For the average gamer by far the biggest added value to any game will never be some extra screen, its online play.

Here's what I mean about advertising the added value the Wii U controller brings to games. If there's anyone who doesn't own the system and doesn't quite understand why the controller is useful they should check all these out.

ZombiU launch trailer wiiu HD Zombi U official trailer

Splinter Cell Blacklist - WiiU Trailer

Rayman Legends - Gamescom Trailer

It's significant and meaningful added value but it needs to be advertised smartly show why. Ubisoft has done the best at this so far but they tend not to actually run many of these ads on television. Other companies need to do the same and actually broadcast and talk about it. That's only 3 games but I've already played more that use the screen smartly, NFS, Lego City, Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, Trine 2 and more. You talk about the average gamer wanting online play but that's not me and there's a sizable portion of gamers that want to see innovation in the way you play and not just more online multiplayer with better graphics. Just because Wii and Wii U are secondary systems to you, please don't assume that's the way it is for everybody. We're all different people with different gaming habits. I would sooner pick up Little Kings Story rather than Bioshock Infinite, I would rather buy Endless Ocean than Infamous. I would rather play Mario than Fable. Other people are different to me.

That's where the real cost comes from. Nyaa

I don't have my calculator on me so roughly:

Err, GG, you might want to check your maths again.  It's $100.000.000 spent on R&D, not $100.000.000.000?

So it's $1.25 per controller if we assume that for every X1 sold people will buy 1 extra controller on average.  Doesn't sound all too bad to me.  And this is not including any X1 controllers sold for use on PC.

Did MS have to spend this kind of money refining it's controller?  Probably not, but that didn't stop them.

Could they have done something more off-the-wall with their controller?  Perhaps, but don't forget that MS also has Kinect, which, when coupled with a controller, could open up at least some opportunities gameplay wise.
