The Witch and The Hundred Knights (PS3) – 8/8/8/7 [31/40]

That's a bit of a surprise. Not that this is a bad score by any means, but everything I had read up on this game kind of suggested that this would be the kind of game the Japanese market would completely love and eat up. Wonder how it'll sell.

That's typical for Nippon Ichi. Still love their games to death though. Can't wait for it!

I got a fancy new smartphone with a super responsive multi-touch Capacitive screen. Annnnnd after 24 hours with I have decided that [good] resistive touch screens are better. For accuracy you cannot beat a stylus and you can still often use your fingers. With Capacitive unless you have a huuuge screen half the icons are less than half the size of you finger tip. So you fluff it a lot. The keyboards are tiny, fine for stylus but borderline unusable for finger typing. Your large fingers obscruct the screen and you can't use a stylus with them either.

Michel Ancel said:

"When the Wii U version was completed we could have said 'we stop the Wii U version and only develop content for Xbox 360 and PS3'. But what we said was 'Let's continue on Wii U, adding content to Wii U', and the main illusion that we had that game in particular was to work on Wii U. working with Nintendo, development kits, discovering the Wii U... so we continue with this positive energy until the end". The creative director at Ubisoft Montpellier seems delighted with the new Nintendo console, "what happens with the Wii U is that it is not easy for the mass market to understand what's great inside". Ancels' words almost trace Satoru Iwata after E3.

"I see it at home, when I say to people, 'look, we have this console, it has a touch screen (which looks like a large smartphone or a tablet)'... and people don't directly connect all these things as a system, or see the fun." It will take time, also took place with the DS. "That is the risk when you are innovating: perhaps people are not as fast as you".

By the by guys who played City Folk or Wild World, Animal Crossing: New Leaf is by far the best in the series, there is tons of new stuff so don't worry about that and as far as I can tell virtually no grass wear. I have seen other towns online including Nintendos dream town and there is so much you can do. Tons of customisation. And you can earn plenty of cash, its realistic to catch everything too because of the island. There are minigame which get you tokens to exchange for special items. It's really excellent. So much stuff I don't even know where to begin, a nightclub, a coffee shop, shoe stores, gardening shops etc. Instant messaging in online play, hanging things on walls, visiting other peoples towns even when they aren't online, you can set up campsites or an exhibition in the museum, you can buy museum furniture and wallpapers, you can buy socks and tights and pants.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Main Theme Classical Recording

How would an orchestrated version of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf theme sound?

The good folk behind The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert tour helped us find out, and you can hear the result in this!

Eurogamer Rayman Legends preview:

All of the levels are better with friends involved, and up to four players (five on Wii U) can essentially drop in and drop out at any time. But the lack of the GamePad controller for non-Wii U versions is sometimes a problem. Ubisoft has done its best to replicate the touchscreen Murphy character's actions for other systems by having him move automatically and be operable with the simple press of a button at the right time. But this removes some of the fun of frantically looking from screen to screen to balance what's happening on both, and of performing Murphy's movements and actions yourself (such as firing a slingshot, re-arranging platforms, or tickling and swatting away enemies).

You also lose some of the precision gained by controlling the character directly with a fingertip. In one level Murphy must eat through a solid section of cake to create a tunnel for the players to follow. But the timing when he's automatically moving on PS3/Xbox 360 versions is less precise - I had to restart several times.

Seems Ancel has tooled Rayman Legends Wii U so it works for fingers well, aswell as stylus: Ancel has a clear preference: "to me, it's not very natural to play with the stylus."

Ancel wanted to ensure that Legends would play well with a finger, not a stylus. "I think most of the kids now are more comfortable with tablets, they use their fingers," Ancel said. So, "we did some special developments to interpolate what the player is doing."

The end result? "It's more accessible than most of the other Wii U games," Ancel argued.

Same as a couple of weeks ago, it's quite disheartening when you post 20 stories and quote many stories and get no response whatsoever. Like talking to a brick wall. And you guys wonder why I didn't post last week?

Games TM reviews:

  • Pikmin 3 (Wii U, Nintendo): 9
  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros (3DS, Nintendo): 8
  • New Super Luigi U (Wii U, Nintendo): 7
  • Dust 514 (PS3 PSN, CCP): 5/10
  • Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PS3 PSN/Xbox 360 XBLA, 505 Games): 8
  • Wonderbook: Diggs Nightcrawler (PS3, Sony): 8
  • State of Decay (Xbox 360 XBLA, Microsoft): 7

Ducktales Himalayas video

That was fun to watch, but I'm a wee bit disenfrachised with the Wii U these days so as soon as I was done watching this my first thought was, "I wonder how long this is going to be delayed."

  • Watch Dogs was initially demoed using high-end PCs, with raw power much greater than either of the next-gen systems
  • PS4 version appears to lack some of the sheen of the PC code revealed a year earlier, and didn't seem to match the version seen at the PlayStation Meeting event in February either
  • Image quality on the PS4 version looks slightly less refined than PC
  • Post-process AA solution of some kind on the PS4. Meanwhile, the older PC demo appears to be employing a far more aggressive edge-smoothing algorithm that delivers a much cleaner appearance
  • There are some clear examples where certain features have been scaled back on PS4
  • Depth of field is used more often in the older PC demo, and to greater effect
  • The appearance of ambient lighting and shadowing is toned down on the PS4
  • PS4 has reduced depth and visual flair across the scene
  • Weather-based touches are also dialled back on PS4
  • There are subtle differences in how shader effects are handled on PC, where these elements appear slightly more pronounced than PS4
  • Visual presentation is generally less refined on PS4, and as a result the world doesn't quite generate the level of immersion it did during previous showings.
  • Occasional, sudden drops in frame-rate along with a bit of judder from time to time.
  • Otherwise Watch Dogs on PS4 currently manages to stick quite closely to the targeted 30fps update with no tearing to speak of.

Looks like this 'beast of a machine' is already having to scale back from what the PC version looks like.

There's no doubt it's the most powerful console but it's still not as good as PC, even at launch where its tech is relatively new. I'm not bothered by that other than the narrative so far from Sony and the media is about how beastly powerful PS4 is. And here it is having to scale back already, from PC.

I was actually going to buy it a couple weeks ago, but the store I went to didn't have a used copy. I'm not quite ready to pay full price for it yet. I just don't really like the Lego games, regardless of how funny they are.
