Originally Iwata (or Miyamoto) said that because there was a mic in the controller, a headset would not be necessary.

You can't use the mic in the pad for online gaming voice chat. You have to buy a 3rd party headset.
Some are wireless some are not. PDPs is wireless and works (which a lot of websites are not reporting), the others you must plug into the Wii U pad port and since you will be using it, it will be right in front of you. Like 30 cm of wire is going to kill us.
But if you use the Pro controller the headset still has to be connected to the wii u pad headphone port. But no one should be using the pro controller anyway as it has no benefit over the wii u gamepad, at all.

Also it depends on if the game actually supports wireless headsets.
