Glad you enjoyed Paper Mario, Aspro.  I remember picking it up during the last year before the GameCube was released when there was literally no new games coming out for the N64.  I taught a middle schooler who was a big Nintendo fanatic, so we discussed the game a bit.  I remember what a breath of fresh air that game was.

If I recall, GG and I had different opinions on which is better, Paper Mario or TTYD.  Probably because I played the original first and  he experienced TTYD first.  TTYD is brilliant, but to me, nothing beats the high of playing PM for the first time nearly a decade and a half ago.

Same as you, I played TTYD first and it is my favorite one.

On the chases can you do something other than run? Getting a flare is the closest thing to strategy. Other than that you just need to know where to go which isnt hard after a while. These play out exactly the same over and over. I am not saying they are hard, I am saying there is nothing there gameplay wise except run.

Completely disagree.

Dvader said:

This "game" is more like Heavy Rain except HR actually had far more things for the player to, but the same simplistic thing. Its a guided cinematic experience. If you want a stress free experience where you have a story told for you while you do trivial actions on a controller then yes this "game" is for you.

Didn't Heavy Rain get a lot of acclaim and recognition? So you're saying it's crap?

Yeah Edge, Transformers Prime used to be a Wii game so that's why it's 1080p on U. Thought so

I would be interested to see if these rumours about 1080p AC3, Zombi U and CODBLOPS2 pan out. I'm dubios on all but Ideaman did mention some huge performance improvements (frame rate mostly) and he has all ubisoft sources.

LOL Really. You never played Heavy Rain so why am I asking you. Heavy Rain has way more gameplay than this game, with choices that actually impact the game and story in meaningful ways. And the story is about the same, HR though is much more engaging.

Yes you should go on with your completely cluessless observation of both games.

Just finished it a second time, about 2 hours and 30 min long. Totally pointless, the changes are all cosmetic. I think I did one different puzzle. You go through the exact same locations. The characters change clothes and have different personalities and that is about it.

But I did finish it twice cause it is such a painless experience.

Well this game inspired me to play a real game, so I will play the original Silent Hill.

Its the same kind of game but it has much more content, player interaction, a story that really changes not just cosmetic changes. It is way more fleshed out. So while its the same kind of thing Heavy Rain would be like the far superior sequel. I have said I wish HR had wiimote support cause you do all the same stuff except you use the sticks to manipulate objects.

They are both these sort of cinematic experience kinds of game where you do a few things but for the most part you following a very strict script. Some people really enjoy them, some don't.

Explain to me how this game is any different than say Heavy Rain.

Here you imply that Shattered Memories and Heavy Rain are the same type of game.

Heavy Rain has way more gameplay than this game, with choices that actually impact the game and story in meaningful ways. And the story is about the same, HR though is much more engaging.

And here you explain the difference. HR has way more gameplay according to you and it has way more choices.

You are contradicting yourself here Vader. First you imply they are the same sort of game and then it has way more gameplay, choices and so on.

Also please explain to me how: walking around with a flashlight, solving simple puzzles, running away from monsters and answering questions of a psychiatrist is a cinematic experience? When I think cinematic I think of MGS and stuff like Uncharted.

I already answered your first question to GG so read that. A cinematic experience in a game to me is one where the game is basically completely scripted and you are basically doing very minimal interaction with the game to move it along. Its more like a Dragon's Lair game but way more interactive. Stuff like MGS and Uncharted have tons and tons and tons of gameplay, it has a cinematic like story and presentation but you cant sit by casually, you have to be good at it, you have to really play the game. One is a game, one is more like an interactive movie.

Basically my mom can play SH and finish it, she would never be able to finish MGS or Uncharted.

Oh it's on. I want you to film your mom completing it from top to tail. Edit it into a best of 5 minute clip and let us laugh. laugh

Maybe you should read what I posted. There was only one question. And here is your answer.

So it is like Dragon's Lair, but way more interactive? So it is nothing like Dragon's Lair!

And minimal interaction? You have full control of your characters 95% of the time! If you called the game easy and boring I could understand your criticism, but cinematic? Nope sorry. Your distinction between interactive movie and game is very blurry at best.

Well, why don't you try and find out?

Here is an example of how Heavy Rain is more interactive, more of a game than Silent Hill.

Skip to a minute, this is the exact same scene from SH, car trapped underwater. The big difference however is that in HR YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO STUFF OR YOU DIE. That alone makes this scene far more tense and nerve wrecking cause you life is actually on the line. As you can see you still have to do all sorts of movements and button presses, looks ugly with all the icons but its basically the same thing as wiggling the wiimote in certain ways.

In SH this scene has you sit there. The game LITERALLY tells you to not do anything. So you sit for about a minute, DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (ok maybe get a flashlight from the back) and it is over. No chance for you to die, there are zero options available to you the player. In HR you fail at that you die. I dont think that is one of the moments where the story continues but it could be, my memory is hazy.

But there it is HR actual timed gameplay with real consequences. SH you sit and do nothing and watch stuff happen.

Well, why don't you try and find out?

In SH you do exactly what the game wants you to do. You have zero choices outside of the chases and those choices are minimal, just go to this door or that door.

For most of the game you walk in a linear path. You reach a closed door where the key is clearly highlighted so you do a basic interaction to get the key to open that door. Maybe you get a puzzle where you have to basically be observant and that is as complicated as it gets. You as a player do mostly nothing except exactly what is expected of you. It is a completely guided experience. In the first SH game I could go down one hallway or another, fight a monster or not, have to save ammo, have to manage health,  have to carry items around to solve puzzles as the solutions are not all located in the same room. I have gameplay options, I have choices to make and my skill at the game determines if I live you die. The only moments like that in SM are the chases but again those are very basic.

There are plenty of games that have zero options. There are light gun games, some platforming games that only allow one type of solution to clear an obstacle, puzzle games and so on. Are those games cinematic experiences too?
