The best compliment I can give Skyrim is that I had no clue that I played for over four hours straight today.  I felt like maybe I spent an hour and a half with it, at most.  I kept wanting to try more quests.  I had to travel through a cave to find shards of a sword so that I could join a group called the companions, attempted several times to kill a giant (and failed), lured a traitor out of a town and just simply worked on leveling up.  There's a cool way to help your character to level which I tried sucessfully.  This game certainly grabs me like Fallout 3 did, but with a much faster paced beginning.

Sadly, I wanted to go through Peace Walker at the same time as you guys, then made the mistake of popping Skyrim into the 360.  Now I may be sidetracked for some time.  I also have Halo anniversary and Mario 3D Land waiting on me.  I have game overload at the moment, but know that the best thing to do is focus on one to two games at a time.  Right now, those two games are Skyrim and Mario.  There's a good chance that I can finish Mario before the new year to bring the total of completed games to 26 for 2011.

I really wished I could've gotten Skyrim for PS3.  I have a sneaking suspicion that my 360 is on it's last legs.  It doesn't show any signs of breaking, it's just the pessimist in me that believes that.

Hey has anyone else been following that customer service email between Ocean Marketing, "Customer Dave" and Penny Arcade regarding a special controller that did not ship in time for the holidays? It spawned one of the more nasty and bizarre flame wars that apparently spilled over into real life.

I wonder if Penny Arcade can manage to even make flame wars unfunny. Link?

I just started Splinter Cell Conviction, I love how badass the game makes you feel. Some elements are well done but wow the shooting is terrible. I am in this Iraq level which is a straight shooting level (who decided this was a good idea, this level is horrible) and this is like PS1 level shooting. I shot a dudes hand and he died like it was a head shot. It feels so sloppy. Sad cause the stealth stuff is pretty cool.

I remember the mission, it was okay to break up the main gameplay. I think Conviction tries to speed up and streamline the gameplay too much which takes away the satisfaction of a traditional SC game. It's a decent title but not anything above an 8.4 or so.

I'll have to give you guys my 3DS friend code because my wife got me a 3DS and Super Mario 3D Land.  Yay!  Now to pick up Mario Kart and Zelda from an after Christmas deal.

I also got Skyrim (360) and AC:  Revelations.  I can see all the fuss about Skyrim now after vowing to play for fifteen minutes, but playing for two hours straight.  It's certainly not gonna be my GOTY, but it's pretty damn good.

I got Skyrim and Arkham City. Happy

Did you not read about the major PS3 problems Skyrim has? It's essentially broken.

I got Mario Kart 7 on Christmas Day. Pretty good game though not really better than the wii or gc versions. The only explanation I can give for the 9/10 reviews is that I think finally reviewers have gotten over their hate on Mario Kart phase. The game is really no better than the recent console versions. Most of the new tracks aren't even that good, it's the Wii and GC tracks that stand out the most in this game.

The graphics though....... can someone explain to me how they are so clear and crisp even in 3D? I'm used to 3D, 3DS games having worse aliasing and having jaggies but this game is clear and crisp and even runs at 60 FPS in full 3D.

Even the Wii and GC tracks look better in this game, they don't have the soft look of the Wii version either. Sound is pretty awesome in terms of the remade SNES, DS and gba tracks - the remixed Wario pinball music is very cool, they use effects that sound like a pinball machine. Also for some reason this game pumps the 3DS speakers past their usual, fairly low volume. Maybe Nintendo had some sort of volume limit for developers on launch games so the battery wasn't worn out too quickly?

Oh yeah the handling in Mario Kart 7 is notably more forgiving, but it might be because you can balance your kart with different wheels, making any kart easier to control. You can play as the heavy Bowser and DK in this game and don't have the usual heavy, slow acceleration but fast top speed. You can just customise your kart to how you like it.

Oh and some of the old tracks have been remixed and tweaked to add the gliding and underwater parts of this game. Sometimes on an old track you will fall into water and instead of dying you will discover a new unseen world. Cool stuff.

Morgan Webb - Hardcore gamers don't want motion, Wii controls do not involve skill

A portion of a CNN interview with Morgan Webb...

CNN Geek Out: With the Wii U and the PlayStation Vita coming out next year, is this where we are headed with more motion controls and less button pushing in gaming?

Webb: I think there is room for both. Core gamers - the hardcore gamers who play games like "Gears of War," "Call of Duty," "Assassin's Creed" and Skyrim" - that gamer is definitely more interested in using a controller for a lot of their experiences. The problem is that [with] the [PlayStation] Move, these motion experiences aren’t nuanced enough to actually give the player as much control as they would have with a [regular] controller. For example, if you are swinging a sword on a Wii game, you slash to the right and it does a right slash or slash to the left and it does a left slash, but it doesn’t really track or there is no skill involved. Now you are just standing up there making slashing motions for three hours.

indecision

I think developers are figuring out the right way to use 3-D now. When it's not so in your face it really adds a lot to the game. Even at it's highest setting MK7 never jumps off the screen, but ultimately I think that's too its benefit. Plus, and maybe it's just my own experience, my eyes don't get as tired as quickly when I use the 3-D in Mario Kart as opposed to some other games. Mighty Switch Force also seems to have taken a similar road, and has a more subtle 3-D feel that works extremely well.

I think the standard depth is easier on the eyes, you can see in Mario 3DLand where you can use the d-pad to flip between depth 3D and pop out 3D. I prefer pop out for the effect.

@ GG,  yeah I knew about the Skyrim PS3 problems.  That's why I'm playing it on 360, but would prefer to play the other version.  The reason for this is because I already have two other games to play on my 360 and fear it's last legs anyway.
