No really, Goldeneye was THE big high school and college get together game back then.
We're not claiming it wasn't, but that certainly doesn't mean it was cool.
And back from a very brief trip! Did I miss anything?
Just got off a lengthy session, so none for me. Need sleep.
Sad Travo is sad.
On the whole PS Xbox debate thing, Archie is right the market has changed a ton and I domt know if Sony had their useal games would it matter. The games that are popular in the US now are the MS style, western games. I talk to my nephew who is 14 about games and he knows nothing of anything outside CoD, battlefield, GTA, Madden. He knows all Rockstar games, all FPSs, all the stuff kids his age talk about in school. I ask him about DMC or even RE and he knows crap. They just dont interest him,
What is this bullshit revisionist theory about first person shooters?
The FPS rage started back with Doom and has not died out since.
Last gen we had Halo, the gen before we had GoldenEye that sold Halo like numbers. This gen Call of Duty just exploded when they put it in a modern setting. The market did not change much. FPS shooters where big then now they are even bigger.
FPS shooters are not the only thing that exploded. This gen Mario exploded also with games like NSMB, NSMBWii, Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii each selling more than 20 million copies.
Of course FPSs were always big but nothing like now. Its not just FPS, its that almost every game is a shooter of some kind.
As for Mario, he never left, its just that now the Nintendo consoles have the user base to support it. The old Mario games were doing the same thing when Nintendo consoles sold 50+ million units.
I finished Portal 2 this morning.
Great game, basically on the same level as the original. Felt like it was quite a bit longer than the 1st game, which I wasn't expecting. These games are so unique that you can't really judge them on anything but themselves. I guess a 9/10 would have to do.
The old Mario's were packed in with the console. NSMB Wii and DS both outsold SMB3. Mario Kart went from 7 million to 20+ million in one gen. This increase cannot be explained solely by the increase of userbase. Mario Kart started with the SNES.
And last gen FPS were big. Halo 2 sold 8+ million, Halo 1 sold over 5 million. GoldenEye sold 8 million the gen before that, Turok 1 and 2 were million sellers too. FPS were huge back then, not as big as now, but it is not like the market had a paradigm shift. The market has not changed much, they were big then they are bigger now and their popularity is increasing. It was increasing then and it is increasing now.
Halo was not on the forefront? Come on now!
Shooters are popular because they are some of the easiest games for even casual gamers to pick up and play. Not a big learning curve. That's why all my brother and his kids play are the Call Of Duty games over the past few years.
Like I said, for over 10 years now.
I am not sure about that. First time gamers really have trouble with the dual analog. I think it is the dudebro crowd that makes them popular. The same meatheads that keep Michael Bay employed
GoldenEye outsold Halo 1. I think the FPS craze on console started with Turok Dinosaur Hunter.
And you and Vader claimed that the market has changed. Me and the Edgemeister said that it was always like that. Sure it is bigger, but the market is the same, when it comes to shooters.
But they were growing in popularity then and they are growing in popularity now. So not much of a change there. Yes they are bigger now, but that happens when stuff grow, they get bigger. I think the fact that all consoles are online enabled from the start is the reason why they kept growing. Will be interesting to see what happens next gen.
And on the N64 you had
GoldenEye
Perfect Dark
Turok
Turok 2
Turok Rage Wars
Turok 3
Duke Nukem Zero Hour (3rd person, but you can play the whole game in first person)
James Bond: The World is not Enough
Doom 64
Duke Nuken 64
And that is just from the top of my head
Internet has showed me
Forsaken (How did I forget this one?)
Quake and Quake 2
Hexen
Rainbow Six
South Park (yellow snow balls FTW)
Armorines
and even Daikatana
That is a huge list.
