Two hours later it finishes the update and restarts and I go again to try and start the game.  BUT now the game wants to bring its self up to date.  It's been doing so for half an hour and (i just checked) it's done 32% of the 1st of 9 updates it needs to bring itself to version 1.09

I've heard this a lot on gaming podcasts and since I don't go out into the regular community, like GAF or System Wars, I don't know what the arguments or facts are surrounding the assertion.  Is there any basis in fact for such claims -- even if exaggerated for effect? Are the important internal components on the Wii and the GC the same?

Not at all. Just look at how slim the wii is for a start compared to GC. Everything has been die shrunk and miniturised, but importantly like Agnates said, it has more memory and a faster CPU etc. It's more powerful than an Xbox minus the in built shaders. For instance Retro studios said that Metroid Prime 3 had something like 3 times the texture resolution of Prime 2.

3rd parties rarely take advantage of the systems power though.

I think it's because the game itself has so many updates. It's almost like Naughty Dog released a 87% finished game and they just finished it later through patches! That's not what happened but it kind of feels like it.

I remember playing it at my cousin's house when he got it and there were two separate updates, one when you put in the game for the first time with patches, and the second, when you join the multiplayer for the first time. It's something about "syncing data" with the servers I think, and it took FOREVER!!!

I know from PS3 owners that it's notorious for its updates and mandatory installs/downloads, etc.

Your first mistake was agreeing to the update (my PS3 is unplugged network wise).

 Seriously, that was a great idea you had never to get involved with all these update business.

It's literally been updating all morning (well over five hours now) ... wasting my time and filling the harddisk with junk.  And it's nowhere near finishing (not even 55% overall on the Uncharted 2 updates).  I will soon eat and take a nap and won't be able to play until tonight because the heat and glare in the living room is too bad in the afternoon.

This sucks worse than loading tapes on the comodore 64
