IGN Kinect Impressions

Volunteers to step up onto the stage to have a go at Dance Central were thin on the ground, but everyone else was keen to have a go at the four other games on offer – Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures, Joy Ride and Kinectimals – to finally get a chance to see whether Kinect can justify its £130 price tag.

Joy Ride – a cartoony kart-racer - was surprisingly difficult to control, and most of the seasoned gaming journos spent half the time spinning off the track. Waving your limbs around in front of a screen, regardless of how simplified the game is, isn't an intuitive control system.

The system's responsiveness also seemed a little off balance and only time will tell whether this gets easier with practice. You can see the potential for Kinect, but it feels like Microsoft was still either keeping its cards close to its chest, or had over-promised with the initial reveal.

Kinect Sports and Adventures seemed a better fit for the new interface, but for most of the time trying the ball-dodging mini-game in Adventures was spent flailing around at random. Whether this was caused by the infamous 'lag' that seemed to plague early demos was difficult to tell, but when you have to resort to waving your arms like a semaphore enthusiast at a rave whilst you're trying to do something as simple as bat a ball back at the screen it can get frustrating.

kinect-20100730012744906.jpg
Here's what you get for your cash, but will it be worth it?

Our final demo was with Kinectimals, which was shown to us in a curtained off area of the showfloor, seemingly to enable voice commands to be heard by Kinect. The system really struggled in the darkened area, with the sounds of Lady Gaga still heard through the thick curtains, and the on-screen lion cub responded to the demonstrator's commands only sporadically.

It seems silence and solitude are needed by Kinect for optimum performance - conditions seldom found in homes with young children – Kinectimal's target audience.

From what we were shown, there is little that Kinect has to offer for the hardcore gamer from its opening titles, with the casual gamer clearly their number one target.

The games being shown were clearly just designed to demonstrate the peripheral's capability at a very basic level, but until Microsoft begins to utilise some of Kinect's more exciting features in a – dare we say it – cooler way, then it may struggle to convince even its most fervent fans to part with £130 when it finally becomes available later this year.

As it stands, PlayStation's Move looks a much more accessible piece of hardware and the tech demos we've seen blew Kinect's flailing displays out of the water. Nintendo is still ahead of the game when it comes to motion sensing, and both Sony and Microsoft still have a long way to go to catch up, but so far Kinect seems like the lame donkey in the race.

:

To tell the truth, I am so busy with the launch of Nintendo 3DS that I have no time to ponder. But an idea sometimes comes into my head all of a sudden. It is not until I face the pressure of a deadline that I have a brainwave. The busier I am, the more inspirations hit me. I am now in a very good condition in that sense. Among the unveiled projects, I know that we have to complete the new Pikmin and I can tell you that development is going fairly smoothly. And the new Nintendogs, announced at the E3, features cats, and I now own a cat. Reporters often ask me, "What is your hobby?", which could potentially relate to the theme of the next game, so I am told by Mr. Iwata to keep it a secret. I mentioned my cat about one year ago for the first time, and we announced the related game the other day as planned. Nintendogs+cats will be completed soon. I am enjoying various activities in good spirits, say, continuing to swim regularly and interacting with local elementary school students as a volunteer juvenile counselor. We can probably give you something new again next year. I am still very active in the field of developing games. I hope you will look forward to the next product. Now might be the time to create some new characters because the most recent character, Pikmin, is no less than ten years old soon. That is all for me here. - Shigeru Miyamoto

I think Jun Takeuchi has a lot of responsibility for Lost Planet 2 flopping. Some of the designs that went into the game was heavily criticized. These were really bizarre designs that reviews pointed out. I think he screwed it up.

When he designed RE5, it was probably easier not to screw it up because all he and Capcom had to do was copy the successes of RE4. But when it came to Lost Planet 2, it was obvious he didn't have what it took to make a western type of third-person shooter that can compete with the likes of Gears of War. LP2's failure is probably why Capcom took him off of RE6.

And the poor reviews which were like 6s and 7s killed the game at retail, big time! I think those reviews made people decide that the game wasn't worth it at $60, but probably worth checking out with a price drop around $20-30.  That's how I felt about the game. I was interested when they first showed the game but then when the poor reviews started coming in, I decided to check out the game when it gets a price drop. Still waiting for that price drop. Around $20 will be good.

Because LP2 was designed with the western market in mind, like Dead Rising and the first LP was, the competition was pretty fierce coming in. LP2 had a lot of potential though. But I think Japanese developers are still learning on how to make a good multiplayer that can compete with the popular western games.

Iwata

- Naturally, we are developing new products all the time. Whenever asked, our answer is yes, (we are making new products.) Our development departments are dedicated to developing new products. Once we release a product, we will soon move to the development of the next. Since the launch of the original Nintendo DS, the company has introduced you to several new models, but we have to anticipate the life span of the Nintendo DS series will eventually come to an end someday. We have been studying and developing the next product for that day. In this context, Nintendo 3DS has been under development for the six years (since the release of the original Nintendo DS.) Speaking of other products, we are of course studying and developing the next console to Wii. However, there is a big difference between studying a product and announcing what it is and when we will release it. I am afraid to say that the history of entertainment is also the history of imitation. A great idea will promptly be copied unless protected through patents. At the same time, it is really important for our business to positively surprise people. Will you be surprised by our completed product if we told you how it is surprising three years in advance? Therefore, we basically disclose information on our products as late as possible. We believe this is the best approach for the entertainment products we are developing. Again, we are planning the next products for Nintendo's continuous growth, but we cannot tell you what, when and how we will release it here. Thank you for your understanding.

Jesus, this article is HUGE.

RE5 is their second bestselling game though. I believe it was Takuchi's own decision to give up on the RE series after trying to live up to RE4 owners expectations.

I loved what I saw of LP2 when I first saw it, that huge frog like boss. Then I sort of realised that it was a massive bullet sponge. The reviews really did kill it though. Hardcore gamers read the reviews and know when something is worth buying.

I think the aesthetics of LP2 is one of its strong points personally. Bizzare, yes, but there's plenty of conventional badassery as well, and a lot of the weirder elements were in the first game anyway. As for the gameplay, already commented on that, reviews aren't everything, and while there seem to be many legit flaws with how the game is designed, there are plenty elements that they attacked without reason. Dunno what hardcore gamers you mean, the GTAIV and MW2 crowd? I'd call these casual. Hardcore is a minority now, There's just a loud portion of casual gamers who like to yell they're hardcore because they play FPS and M rated games. Like most reviewers.

Oh, by the way, IGN is supposed to have a exclusive review of Castlevania HD for XBLA today. I'm actually looking forward to this one since I'm interested in what this game is about.

Hopefully exclusive doesn't mean paid! Uneasy

J/K

Also, I hope they don't botch it up like their screwy Hydro Thunder review, which is one of the worst reviews ever written. The reviewer gave that game a 5.5 The funny thing is, when you see Metacritic, IGN is the only review with a bad review. All the other 15 or so reviews gave the game higher scores and loved it. Also, those reviews contradict every bad thing the IGN review says!

When you have 15 other reviews loving the game and one odd one coming in and claiming the game is bad, it's apparent that the IGN reviewer sucked at the game and had no idea what he was talking about!

By the way, Hydro Thunder is a fun and addictive game! Just don't tell Steel about it...

...because you know how he feels about water racing games! Nyaa

He probably left because he didn't want to take the pressures of designing a big name game anymore. Also because in Japan, I think employees leave on their own instead of being let go, it's sort of like that honor thing, right?

And his departure and LP2 failing is warranted. I read rumors on the forums how Taekuchi would get into shout matches with everyone during development. This was during RE5's development which probably made the work place unpleasant. You can imagine the shout matches and fights that might've taken place during LP2's development.

You and I are in agreement. But I want Bobovich's take.

There's no take, just annoyance that people can't seem to remember the shit I told them thousands times before.

Metroid other M is a collaboration between Team Ninja, Team Metroid (I am not sure what their official name is) and D-Rockets for he cut scenes. If you think the game is going to be crap, that is your right, but don't blame it on Team Ninja.

For 2 reasons I say this.

1) They are in collaboration with 2 other teams, including the Metroid guys.

2) Yoshio Sakamoto actually contacted Team Ninja and asked for their collaboration. He was not forced to do that. And even if Team Ninja does something wrong, he is still the producer and can stop and correct things. Heck in a interview it was said that Team Ninja wanted to use the nunchuck, while Sakamoto inspired by NSMBWii wanted to go Wiimote only.

Some people don't like the story focus and blame Team ninja for that. Well guess what Sakamoto wrote the scenario. Even better he wrote the whole fucking Metroid manga.

There are some design decisions in Oher M that I do not like, but let's be honest here people. All responsibility falls on Sakamoto's shoulders. He hired those guys and he had the power to stop some decisions. Actually most of the controversial decisions have been made by him. So quit the crap and stop scape goating Team Ninja.

And and another point. If you say you don't trust Team Ninja, you are saying that you do not trust Sakamoto, for he was the once who approached them.

Earth Seeker looks interesting, pics are so small though.

Like when Zelda team members headed up Wii Fit? You were adamant that it wasn't the zelda team but you're now adament that its the Metroid team making Other M.

Metroid team, with Team Ninja and D-Rockets. Together. Totally different from Wii-Fit which had some Zelda team members, but also people from other games. Nintendo is known for shuffling team members around. Koizumi of Galaxy fame, worked on Link's Awakening and other Zelda games before.

Your second argument was that if Wii Fit was not released we would have Zelda Wii by now, but you forgot that two Zelda DS games were released in that time. Guess who made? Team Zelda.

And from interviews Zelda Wii was saved by the Wii Sports Resorts team. So suck at that for a while. Really getting tired of discussing things with you. You say I am wrong, we get in a fight and eventually you agree. Let's just skip all these steps and start agreeing with me from the beginning. Saves a lot time

When I saw that Iwata 3DS story, I thought was spam at first.  Keywords, must have more keywords!

I totally got caught off guard in a big way. I just received a phone call for Power Level Marketing.  Someone with a Playstation 3 game just set up a meeting with me for next week. Huh... maybe I do know what I'm doing.

I'm still kind of shocked as hell.  I had kind of put it hold until after Labor Day (Sept. 6th) when I had more free time for it and hadn't done anything else to promote it since last month. Got to say I think I earned myself a beer.

Finally, some good quality gameplay footage from the Wii version of Sengoku Basara 3. It looks like the port of MT Framework worked out decently for Capcom, the game seems solid enough, and as close to the PS3 version as you could expect. Not top quality, but still, it could probably look better in a game that didn't try to push lots of enemies and what not. It looks much better than their previous Dead Rising hackjob in any case.

Capcom didn't have to hide the game like they did, this is probably the only official video for Wii, and it's quite old:

Here's some random Samurai Warriors 3 footage for comparison. They look about the same in overall visual quality I think. Koei's game seems a bit lower end and muddier perhaps, with even more pop-in too, but it also seems to have more enemies on-screen, though that could be the levels shown I guess.
