Tiger's got a sore neck.  You know what that's from...

In other news, I'm reading an EGM from February 1995.  They are talking about this new thing called "modem matches" enabled by X-band, a service that costs $7.95 a month for 32 play units.  Works with ordinary SNES and phone lines (with an option for parents that allows Long-Distance to be deactivated).

Ahh...

Honestly though. Joking aside, I think he's just making an excuse for golfing bad lately. Like LeBron James' elbow. If Cavs lose to the Celtics, all he has to say is "it's the elbow."

Athletes should be like Kobe Bryant, suck it up, and play with a broken finger, beat up, but still compete without complaining or bringing the media's attention to the injury.

Maybe Tiger's injury is real, but I don't know. I mean he lied "120 times" if you know what I mean! Nyaa

^He's acting in a childish manner, which includes making excuses.  There is a place for explanations, but never for excuses.  If it is his shoulder, and it's impacting his ability to golf I am confident that he would have sought medical advice before playing.  If that is the case, then say you were performing against your doctor's advice.  You don;t go throwing your shoes around being rude to reporters.  Oh well, good thing he's just a golfer and not something important.

Re: Mirror's Edge.

The wall running where you have to press L1, then tap R1 to turn, then tap L1 to grip.  I got used to it, but that's the only non-combat flaw with the game.  I'm done with The Boat level, which was the only level I did not like so far, so hopefully it can end strong from here.

I got used to it by the end, but it doesn't help that it's not eased in like all the other techniques! It can be very fiddly as well.

Yeah, forcing you to use a tool for the first time when you are 80% into a game is not so great.  I'm in that big atrium full of construction scaffolding now...  do you remember that one?

Now parts of that were very frustrating! I'm not touching that in speed run. Dear lord...

- SUPER MARIO GALAXY NEVER HAPPENED. Technically. Instead, the game takes place in an alternate reality where Mario and the Lumas etc. have never met before.
- The sidescrolling intro? It's part of a story book, and as you play, the pages turn and the story appears below. Sounds cool.
- Bowser kidnaps Peach. Oh noes. He's also giant for some reason.
- The fat Luma is the owner of the Mario space ship (although he transforms it from a simple planet), and he's called Lubba. He needs the power stars to fuel the ship, which Bowser stole along with the princess. Of course.
- When Lubba transforms it into the Mario ship he says "Nice spaceship, huh? More like a FACEship!". ... I shouldn't have laughed but I did. Nyaa
- The Starship Mario is the hub, but it's pretty small. You just use it to talk to people and have random fun. The new map system is less complicated than the Comet Observatory.
- It's a brighter game, with more colour. That's nice. Plus some are sunny planets.
- 40 Plus Galaxies, each with a new and interesting gameplay mechanic.
- One of the stars in the TreeTrunk Galaxy is obtainable in a similar way to the Princess' Secret Slide level. Complete with the same music. Hell yeah.
- The Fluffy Bluff Galaxy apparently has music rivalling Gusty Garden. I can't wait. Grinning World 3's is supposed to be good too (although how can you have WORLDs of GALAXYs?)
- Yoshi gets more action than he did in NSMBWii. GOOD.
- Spring Mario only comes along once or twice. They rather like this news, although I personally liked Springing around.
- Luigi comes along to be playable at only 20 stars, and they hint at another available character when you get the 120... Oh darn it now I'm excited.
- A monkey character known as "The Chimp" who let's you play minigames. Intriguing.
- More 2D bits.
- If you use the Cosmic Guide (the helping feature), the star you obtain is bronze instead of Gold to ETERNALLY SHAME YOU until you get it yourself. Mario also pulls a funny face when he's possessed.
- Throwbacks to older games, especially in the later stages. It warns you not to go on the internet to look for them- The fun is in the surprise. Thus I'll be ignoring you Americans for a while as I wait patiently. Nyaa
- The Bowser stages are reminscent of Super Mario 64's.
- Nothing too revolutionary, and it won't be as amazingly wonderful as SMG first seemed, duh, but it's technically a better game. That's pretty much their only criticism- It's only a minor step up, from an already brilliant game.

As usual, Gamecentral reviews, read it today or it will be gone tommorrow. Posting it here.

3D Dot Game Heroes
Review by Roger Hargreaves – We've said it before and we'll say it again: this game has the best graphics ever.

Not in a technical sense but in its ability to create such a consistent, outrageously stylised and yet wonderfully familiar art style.

As we've also said before though graphics do not maketh the game and the gameplay here never comes close to matching the grandeur of the visuals.

Although the game exists for no reason other than to stimulate the nostalgia glands of wistful thirtysomethings the graphics can be appreciated by anyone.

They're basically 2D 8-bit sprites extruded out into three dimensions.

From the hero to the buildings and landscapes, everything is made up of Lego-like constructions of little cubes - but all still benefiting from modern graphical effects like depth of field.

The end result is a game that looks utterly unique and works as a perfect celebration of older in-game graphics.

Visually then the game is perfect, but disappointingly the graphics and gameplay exist only as a homage to early 2D Zelda games.

Even the music is as similar as legally possible and you're encouraged to edit the character models so they look even closer to Nintendo's old classics.

Many games have tried to copy Zelda over the years but this isn't merely influenced by it, like Okami or Darkstalkers, it's a full blown clone.

As a result you've a huge push-scrolling overworld to explore, filled with respawning monsters.

These are primarily dispatched by your sword, which jabs out in front of you in a giant arc (all the animation is strictly limited to two frames).

There are plenty of secrets and sub quests, and even the odd mini-game, hidden in the overworld and it is a genuine pleasure to ramble through.

One of the few deviations from the Zelda template is that as well as the traditional extra life bars you can also find and upgrade new swords.

This adds an element of grinding to the Zelda experience as you farm coins from dead enemies, but it doesn't overwhelm.

Where things come unstuck are the dungeons, which replicate the Zelda experience (find a boomerang in one, bombs in the next) so exactly it almost seems like some psychotic flashback.

Inevitably the real problem is that the puzzles are just not as well designed.

Add in a rather too old school difficulty level and the fact that the interior designs never change and the six dungeons become a real chore.

Although we'd already played this game on import we obviously had no idea what the dialogue or script were like.

A properly satirical effort would have really helped to elevate the whole experience but the reality is sadly predictable in hindsight: it's exactly like Zelda. It's charming, and often amusing, but quickly forgettable.

This sums up the game as a whole really, which seems a terrible waste.

IN SHORT: One of the best looking games ever, but its awe for retro Zelda ruins hopes for similarly inspired gameplay.

PROS: The art style is drop dead gorgeous and a perfect homage to retro video game visuals. Large overworld.

CONS: The gameplay tries to copy the original Zelda so exactly it feels like a bad imitation rather than a homage.

SCORE: 6/10 Out: 14/5 (UK)

NEWS
UK agrees to give £10bn to Greece bail-out

Alistair Darling has caved into a demand that British taxpayers underwrite at least £10bn of debt held by other European governments, amid fears that the Greek debt crisis could spread.

The deal is aimed at calming global stock markets by reassuring traders that there are measures to stop any contagion caused by Greece from spreading to other nations such as Spain and Portugal.

The Chancellor, acting for the UK until a government is formed, agreed last night to participate in a 110bn (£95bn) stabilisation mechanism designed by finance ministers.

The measures, rushed through over the weekend to be ready when markets open, present an immediate crisis for a Conservative-led government. The bail-out mechanism has increased British liabilities at a time when David Cameron is seeking to push down public spending and exposure to risk.

According to Conservative sources, George Osborne, the man most likely to be the next Chancellor, has reservations over an unpopular decision that is likely to be Labours last act in government.

But Mr Darling had no choice but to surrender to the demand because it was taken under the Lisbon Treatys exceptional occurrences clause that stripped Britain of its national veto. Britain last night succeeded in staying out of European proposals for a bigger fund to bail out debt-laden nations on the Continent.

Under proposals tabled late last night, eurozone countries will make loan guarantees worth £382 billion (440bn) into a fund that will be topped by contributions from the International Monetary Fund.

Both funds will help eurozone countries get cheap loans, if they have problems servicing their debts on the commercial markets.

The developments came as the IMF, the worlds lender of last resort, agreed to hand over its 30bn tranche of bail-out money for Greece. It is part of a wider 110bn package over three years put up by the European Union. Around 5.5bn is available for the indebted nation to draw on immediately.

Red Dead Redemption Games TM mag review details

The multiformat mag reports that 'Rockstar San Diego's rendering of the American frontier is nothing short of absolute' and says that 'Redemption's is a gameworld as expansive and inviting as any we've explored'.

Both the graphics and narrative of the title come in for commendation - and sound better than owt we've seen in an open world game before.

'Shantytowns sit among vast expanses of wilderness, rural homesteads can be found in sweeping grasslands and red sandstone monuments protrude from rough expanses of desert,' GamesTM reports, 'all situated beneath a vast sky of intense neon blues, smouldering oranges, silver greys and any hue in between.'

In terms of gameplay, we're told: 'Redemption is a game unafraid to mete out its ideas slowly, meaning that you're still learning new tricks several hours into the game.'

And despite admitting that not every area of the title's massive gameworld rewards exploration, the mag concludes: 'While Rockstar San Diego may find some difficulty in filling its open expanses with interesting and emergent play, it does imbue it with a stark beauty and compelling narrative that makes Redemption more than just an allusion to cinema, but a piece of work that can confidently stand next to it.'

AND:

Multiformat magazine Edge has reviewed Alan Wake, giving the title 7/10.

The mag praises the title for using 'one of the cleverest scare tactics in recent horror game history'. It reports that the game 'frequently drops hints of things to come... playing with your expectations and even embroider[ing] them by confirming your worst fears'.

It also applauds the 'entertainment pyrotechnic combat' - adding that 'the shock and awe that results from the unlikely combo of a flashlight and shotgun is equally exciting'.

However, the mag has its gripes: 'While the plot moves with all the pace of a paperback, the game fails to keep pace. The solid combat struggles to develop... puzzles are rarely more than perfunctory and the set pieces only set the pulse racing in the game's final hours.'

Ahh...

In college a good friend of mine used to use X-band to play Super Street Fighter II.  I remember watching him thrash an opponent one day, only later to have the guy come back on via chat and accuse him of cheating. The accusation was he was using a pre-programable controller to pull off complex combos. . .  15 years later not much has changed in online gaming huh?
