Okay people 2.5 D does not exist! It is either 2D or 3D. New Mario Bros has 3D characters with 2D backgrounds, I found the animation to be smoother than you get with most 2D games. Metroid would work with 3D characters, but maybe it is better to do it on Wiiware so you can have better characters.

In my opinion 2D is best suited for cartoony games like Wario. Wario is always deformed, crushed, put on fire, waggles his but. These stuff look much better in 2D than they do in 3D. Mario is more "realistic" in his movements, so he can go both ways. Maybe it's also nice to do the 2D/3D mechanic of Super Paper Mario in a pure platformer. Samus has even more realistic movements, so 3D should look alright there.

Conclusion: Who the fuck cares just give me my sidescrolling Metroid and Mario. 2D and 3D are both fine.
