The look and style of it just doesn't appeal to me that much for the type of game it is. I would just rather play Deus Ex or Halo or Far Cry or Half Life if I want to play a shooter I guess. I also have tons of games I haven't even finished yet...so when I buy something new its something that I REALLY want to play.
I've been wanting new IP from Nintendo for ages but its just not really what I had in mind. Funny thing is if it was a game in any of the other genre's I would probably have bought it already. Like Xenoblade...I will be playing that day 1 because its something I really want.
I think Nintendo shot themselves in the foot with the drip-feed of new content, at least here at the VGPress. By the time certain people in here would have deemed it worthy of their coin, launch-like levels of interest had already faded. At least Foolz was true to his word and bought the game, unless other people here. Quite a shame as well, because I think this game would be right up Dvader's ally.

I think it's a bit foolish to expect Nintendo themselves to create something like Xenoblade. Their latest new IP's have all been much more lighthearted. Save for maybe Day of Crisis.

Xenoblade is made by Nintendo.

Monolithsoft, which they bought. It's also an IP that didn't originate on their own consoles, as they're pseudo-sequels to the Xenosaga games. To me that makes it not something that originated from the minds of Nintendo themselves.

But Monolith Soft was wholly owned by Nintendo when they created it.
They had to get permission from Nintendo to even start production on the game.
It actually doesn't have any connections to the other Xeno games, Nintendo suggested the name Xenoblade Chronicles as a reference to the director of the game's other games. It was originally suppose to be Monado: Beginning of the World.

Xenoblade has nothing to do with Xenosaga en Xenogears. The gameplay is totally different and the story is as well So yes it is a new IP. Also nintendo had a big part in creating the game.
And in your example you use Disaster a Day of Crisis which was made by Monolith.

Ah, I haven't played any of the other Xeno games. I just figured that the name + same general theme meant they were part of the same IP. But by that logic you would consider Jet Force Gemini and Banjo-Kazooie to be Nintendo IP as well, while to me they were always distinctly Rareware. It's a fine line I guess.

Really? Well, my bad then. But I did use it as an example of something un-Nintendo like, so my argument still stands, albeit a bit shakey.

nintendo never owned rare. So no it is no fine line

Rareware was never wholly owned by Nintendo. They only owned 49%. Though when Rare went to Microsoft, Nintendo actually gave Rare the rights to every IP Rare created with Nintendo. Nintendo technically owned every game Rare made for them.

They also didn't fully own Monolith when they created Xenoblade either. They bought 80% of their shares in 2007, and only purchased the remaining shares in 2011, after the game had shipped in Japan in 2010. But I'm clinging to straws here, because Rare was only ever owned for 49% by Nintendo. I'll shut up now.
Btw. Xenoblade X only similarity to Xenoblade is the battle system and the art style. The story, structure (X is fully open world) of the game even the setting (X is hard scifi no magic mumbo jumbo) is completely different.

Isn't that more or less the same as the Final Fantasy series? I'd find it hard to argue that both Xenoblade games are their own IP.

I would agree that it is their version of Final Fantasy with each game sharing the main name Xenoblade Chronicles but have a different setting, characters, and themes.
Though it is too early since we only have two games in the series.

I never argued that X and Blade are a different IP.
I don't know what's going on here. Given my elephant memory I remember people complaining over many years wanting something new from Nintendo. A new IP. They finally come out with something from one of their core teams, not a western partner, not a bought-now-Nintendo-owned company.
It's a shooter which most people here like - it has a 7-8 hour single player platformer/shooter campaign built in. It has a riotously fun multipler mode which has been generously expanded with free content. It has that Nintendo inginuity and innovation - those pitch perfect controls, those inventive game changing level designs. A vibrant community and ridiculously addictive gameplay. Splatoon defines Wii U in a way that even Super Mario 3D World doesn't.
10 years from now I won't think back on any other Wii U game the way I will of Splatoon.
But some people here who own Wii U haven't (and seem to have) no intention of buying it? And then I see people who say they don't want a multiplayer game playing and enjoying other multiplayer shooters or showing interest in other multiplayer-only shooters? It's bizaare.
I just don't get it. Missing out on Splatoon is like not buying the next big home console Mario game for me. Nintendo is rarely on such form with a new IP, it makes Pikmin 3 feel incredibly old and has a certain vibrancy, dare I say freshness that no other Wii U title has for me.
